I am very concerned about this situation and hope that you are working to prevent/correct any attempted voter suppression of young people in this and any other similar cases in Virginia.
Could you (aka a member of your staff) let me know what you and others in Virginia are doing to protect the voting rights of Virginia Tech students specifically -- and all Virginia voters, including young people, in general.
I have heard that you are committed to fair and clean elections in Virginia this November. Could you please inform and reassure me on this point? I would be very grateful.
THIS IS A PART OF THE ARTICLE: I wanted Hillary to win so bad, but I saw Sarah, and it just didn't work for me," said Heckman, taking a break in the empty courtyard of J. Paul's restaurant in a downtown struggling to revive. "I have no retirement. Obama understands it's the economy. He knows how we live."
Heckman, like many others in this former coal-mining town at the western foot of the Appalachians, is the type of voter that both presidential campaigns will target in the final two months. Polls show that working-class women have emerged as one of the most critical categories of swing voters at a time when McCain and Barack Obama have galvanized their party bases but still need more votes to win.
Palin, a little-known 44-year-old mother of five, burst onto the scene just days ago, presenting herself as the woman to finally shatter the glass ceiling cracked by the Democratic New York senator's historic candidacy.
But now, after a chaotic introductory week that sparked national debates on McCain's judgment, Palin's experience and even her teenage daughter's pregnancy, the initial signs are not entirely positive for the reinvigorated Republican ticket.
Interviews with some two dozen women here after Palin's convention speech found that these voters were not swayed by the fiery dramatic speeches or compelling personal biographies that marked both the Republican and Democratic conventions. Instead, they were thinking about the price of milk -- nearly $5 a gallon -- or the healthcare coverage that many working families here cannot afford.
Even if they admire Palin's attempt to juggle political ambition, an infant son with Down syndrome and a pregnant unwed daughter, these women say that maternal grit is not enough to win their votes.
Waitress Judy Artice, "Miss Judy," as she is known at Glisan's roadside diner, declared Palin "the perfect candidate" after watching her Wednesday speech. That said, Artice had already decided that her vote would go to the first candidate who mentioned gasoline prices.
"And -- I'll be danged -- it was Obama," Artice, 46, said between servings of liver and onions during the lunch rush.
Both campaigns have signaled that these blue-collar hamlets could be where the election will be decided, an assessment made even more likely when the nation's unemployment rate hit a five-year high in August.
McCain dominates among white men, and Obama, who would be the first black president, is all but sweeping the black vote, most polls show. That leaves white women, the so-called Clinton base, as one of the most sought-after voting groups left on the table.
Recent surveys suggest that Palin, who opposes abortion even in cases of rape or incest, is not necessarily poised to help McCain with moderate women. A National Journal/Hotline daily tracking poll released Friday found that 49% of male voters say Palin is prepared to be president but that only 41% of female voters think so.
But Republican strategists hope that Palin's middle-class roots, union-member husband and love of hunting will help her connect to rural and small-town folks in battleground states such as Pennsylvania.
This is, after all, a place where schools close on the opening day of deer hunting season, people are conflicted about abortion rights and racial bias still simmers.
Sara Taylor, former Bush White House political affairs director, described Palin as a "living, breathing replica of the middle class" who "connected with people in a way we haven't seen a national figure do in a long time."
And Uniontown was very much in the McCain campaign's sights throughout a convention that showcased Palin's small-town roots while portraying Obama, who lives in Chicago, as a big-city elitist.
Republican delegates and activists in the convention hall delighted in Palin's jabs at the Illinois senator, such as when she poked fun at the columned backdrop for Obama's stadium acceptance speech or mocked him as intent on "turning back the waters and healing the planet."
For many women here watching closely, though, that portion of Palin's speech was all they needed to hear.
My Comments: The anecdotal data shows that some movement is being made toward the Obama Campaign! At LEAST some people ARE LISTENING!! [Beyond WATCHING his SKIN COLOR!!] :>) :>)
They have a 500 character limit. Here's what I sent:
Re: Upcoming interview with Sarah Palin.
As VP, Palin may have to take over in a time of crisis. Ask her about her Bush-like method of governing-- loyalty tests, hardline, right-wing ideology. Grill her about her "commander in chief" responsibilities with the ANG. Ask her about foreign policy positions. Make her give more than sound bites. Make her explain her lies about Obama's record during her acceptance speech. PLEASE REMEMBER YOUR DUTY TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.
Please send your thoughts to Charles Gibson!!!
msmartin
It figures, he will go light on her just like he did McCain. He said he didn't feel like he had to ask McCain about the pregnancy or her husband's affiliation with the AIP because it was out there. (Has anybody ever heard such b.s.?) I can think of a million questions he could have asked about those things.
Let us not forget it was Gibson who tried to make mince meat out of Obama at the ABC debate. His interview with Palin will be weak and complimentary for the repubs.
miss sarah has denied being a member. This is the most solid proof that she was. Let's make sure that MSM put this on blast.
For those not familiar, AIP is Alaska Independent Party. Their mission is to secede from the USA and become an independent country. Their motto is Alaska First, which is in direct contradiction of mcsame's slogan "Country First." Now how patriotic is that?
What's far worse, is that the AIP is an outgrowth of the Constitution Party, which seeks to rule the US as dominionists.
However you slice it, she's dangerous.
angee
Yep and we need to hold the MSM asses to the fire on this. Especially since mcsame is always questioning someone's patriotism.

Fascinating article about Palin and her maverick/crazed behavior as mayor of Wasilla in the Seattle Times
"A couple of days later, a story in the Frontiersman noted that Palin was saying personnel changes were likely. "When asked how she would run the city without experienced department heads, she responded, 'It's not rocket science. It's $6 million and 53 employees.' "
The day Palin took office, she told Stambaugh she wanted him to stay on provided he would support her as mayor, his notes say. He agreed. She also asked him to drop the issue of bar hours. He agreed to that, too. On this day, Palin fired the city's museum director, one of the department heads.
Ten days later, Palin wrote to all the department heads, including Stambaugh, asking for letters of resignation. She said she would then decide which to accept. When Stambaugh declined to provide one — pointing to his contract — Palin replied in a letter: "I will expect your loyalty."
Stambaugh was 6-foot-2, 240 pounds. Because he'd heard that Palin had felt intimidated by him during a meeting, he made sure to sit when talking with her, and to use a soothing voice. By early December, things had calmed down, and Stambaugh felt the threat of being fired had passed."
September 7, 2008 Obama and Bill Clinton To Have Dinner Thursday
The worst thing the McCain campaign could have done was unite the Clintons and Obama. He did that by selecting Sarah Palin. The Clintons will be damned before they let another woman steal Hillary's birth right. Bill Clinton invited Obama to dinner on 9/11, Thursday night, after Obama meets with McCain at their joint appearance.
Ah, to be a fly on the wall at THAT dinner...LOL

Yes, indeed. Lets hope they do some strategizing...although, the numbers don't work in McCain's favour.
Sarah Palin's churches are actively involved in a resurgent movement that was declared heretical by the Assemblies of God in 1949. This is the same 'Spiritual Warfare' movement that was featured in the award winning movie, "Jesus Camp," which showed young children being trained to do battle for the Lord. At least three of four of Palin's churches are involved with major organizations and leaders of this movement, which is referred to as The Third Wave of the Holy Spirit or the New Apostolic Reformation. The movement is training a young "Joel's Army" to take dominion over the United States and the world.
...Scared yet?
taritac
This is ridiculous. And no one is picking up on this. This goes beyond crazy preachers. This is a crazy ideology, a crazy movement, and antithetical to the principles of the US Constitution.
Inexperienced and Bush-level incurious. She has no record of interest in foreign policy, let alone expertise. She once told an Alaskan magazine: “I’ve been so focused on state government; I haven’t really focused much on the war in Iraq.” She obtained an American passport only last summer to visit Alaskan troops in Germany and Kuwait. This not only blunts Mr McCain’s most powerful criticism of Mr Obama. It also raises serious questions about the way he makes decisions.
Palin in not about now...it's about the future. The problem is...America is moving away from religious extremism.

Considering that the Palin family includes four minors and that the income from either Palin parent would support the family, is this the position of evangelical Christians — for both parents to choose demanding jobs that require frequent and extended absences from home? Up until now, Dobson would have criticized that lifestyle. Now, he calls it a "personal matter."
Next time someone asks what you think of Sarah Palin, please don't just call her a "skilled politician" with a "compelling biography." Call her a liar, too. Here's how that would work:
Michelle
My opinion on this:
Senator Obama knows how to deal with truth and lies in this cultural context.
He knows.
Calling out liars as liars can lead to Energizer-Bunny-energy feedback loops. I know this from experience.
I believe -- from observation and from my gut -- that Senator Obama knows how to work with truth, and deal with lies.
I have never found a good way to call out lies -- they multiply and there is no accountability at all.
But I see that he does. I think he understands how to do this. Remember the primaries.

The other day I saw SF's mayor, Newson, speaking on behalf of Obama and I felt he did an excellent job. We need more of him out there.

I saw that too, and agree that Newsom was great. He was poised, confident and polished.
"I wanted Hillary to win so bad, but I saw Sarah, and it just didn't work for me," said Heckman, taking a break in the empty courtyard of J. Paul's restaurant in a downtown struggling to revive. "I have no retirement. Obama understands it's the economy. He knows how we live."
Six people present have written statements describing what they saw. According to the accounts, McCain waved his hand to shoo away Jeannette Jenkins, whose cousin was last seen in South Vietnam in 1970, causing her to hit a wall.
As McCain continued walking, Jane Duke Gaylor, the mother of another missing serviceman, approached the senator. Gaylor, in a wheelchair equipped with portable oxygen, stretched her arms toward McCain.
"McCain stopped, glared at her, raised his left arm ready to strike her, composed himself and pushed the wheelchair away from him," according to Eleanor Apodaca, the sister of an Air Force captain missing since 1967.
McCain's staff wouldn't respond to requests for comment about specific incidents.
As is nakedly evident, the speech’s central argument, that the 72-year-old McCain will magically morph into a powerful change agent as president, is a non sequitur. In his 26 years in Washington, most of it with a Republican in the White House and roughly half of it with Republicans in charge of Congress, he was better at lecturing his party about reform than leading a reform movement. G.O.P. corruption and governmental dysfunction only grew. So did his cynical flip-flops on the most destructive policies of the president who remained nameless Thursday night. (In the G.O.P., Bush love is now the second most popular love that dare not speak its name.)
This is why the work on the ground in terms of registration is so important: in August alone, the Obama campaign registered 49,000 new voters in Virginia:
State election officials told the campaign Friday that 49,000 new voters signed up in August, a sharp increase from the 36,500 who signed up in July and the 28,000 who registered in June.
The goal of the Obama campaign was 150,000 total by the time the October 5th deadline rolls around, which leaves one month to get the remaining 36,500. Hats off to all VA Democrats who must have been working so hard on this.

The biggest project that Sarah Palin undertook as mayor of this small town was an indoor sports complex, where locals played hockey, soccer, and basketball, especially during the long, dark Alaskan winters.
The only catch was that the city began building roads and installing utilities for the project before it had unchallenged title to the land. The misstep led to years of litigation and at least $1.3 million in extra costs for a small municipality with a small budget. What was to be Ms. Palin's legacy has turned into a financial mess that continues to plague Wasilla.
"It's too bad that the city of Wasilla didn't do their homework and secure the land before they began construction," said Kathy Wells, a longtime activist here. "She was not your ceremonial mayor; she was in charge of running the city. So it was her job to make sure things were done correctly."
Mission accompished. My local paper printed my letter to the editor in its widely-read Sunday edition, along with several others that criticize McCain for his choice.
Did anyone see Blitzer with kyl and Kaine? They were speaking about the economic mess we are in. Kyl said some crap about the Dems being responsible for deregulating the markets.
Isn't that completely false...wasn't it none other than Phil Gramm, McCain's economic advisor, who proposed this deregulation of the mortgate markets?
RobM
Hate to disappoint on this but they are all so knee deep in this fiasco they should all be taken out and shot. You are poor and all of a sudden you can buy a house w/ no proof of income, no credit check and no downpayment. This offer is made on National Television during your favorite program. Yet next to no one goes HUH?!!!!
As to Phil Gramm and deregulation: He wanted everything deregulated. It is his hands and his wife's Wendy(as head of the CFTC) whom were most effective in the commodity pits.
Teacher
Did you personally buy a house with no down payment, credit check or proof of income? I don't know anyone who did, even people in the real estate industry. I know people who were approved but whose interest rates were astronomical due to their credit rating. I saw people who weren't denied, but who were reemed by predatory lending and paying 23% interest on their loans when others were paying 5%. They didn't have to come up with 10-20% down payment, but they had to pay the closing costs & other miscellaneous fees, so you still need to have $5-10 grand on hand just to do that.
jelana
I have a friend who is a realtor and she told me about this a year and a half ago.--no credit check, no income verification, no down payment. The loans were being made to Somalians and Mexicans here in Ohio.

Yes. They have been pushing deregulation for years.
They LIE and no one calls them on it. It is amazing to me that people will LIE, just blatantly LIE without compunction.

Gramm who is McCain's economic advisor is a HUGE problem!!
Obama needs to run on Clintons ECONOMIC record. He needs to OWN the Democratic record of prosperity and the GOP horrible economic record.
The record shows that Gramm was the architect of the present financial markets meltdown, the energy ENRON collaspe as well as the S&L debacle in the 80s with the Keating FIVe which McCain was part of. Obama needs to start hammering home these messages:
Gramm's role as a banker and lobbyist is embarrassing to McCain, the greater harm is likely to be done by his economic advice. He and McCain have been friends since they were young congressional "foot soldiers in the Reagan revolution," as both like to say, and he is often touted (or was until lately) as a likely candidate for Treasury secretary should McCain win the White House.
Now that Gramm has resurfaced in national politics, he surely deserves to be arraigned for his long history of service to powerful interests, dating from the Enron scandal and beyond. But for most Americans, the dubious connections of McCain's lobbying pals, including Gramm, should be less worrisome than the likely results of yet another four years of Republican economic nostrums. Gramm's career stands for the false promises of right-wing ideology and the troubles that such schemes, embodied in legislation, have repeatedly inflicted on us.
The former Texas senator is less voluble these days than he used to be, perhaps unsurprisingly, but in years past he has boasted of his central role in key conservative legislation, especially in liberating major sectors of the economy and finance from public oversight and skewing taxation in favor of the wealthy.
So how has that worked out over the past few decades?
Back in the '80s, Gramm smiled upon the abrupt deregulation of the savings-and-loan industry, described by his idol Ronald Reagan as America's opportunity to "hit the jackpot" of growth. He used his political clout to protect the Texas operators whose crooked machinations eventually helped to bankrupt the S&L industry. In fact, the S&L debacle cost taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars.
"I want to predict here tonight," he said on the evening that Clinton's budget passed in the spring of 1993, "that if we adopt this bill the American economy is going to get weaker and not stronger, the deficit four years from today will be higher than it is today and not lower ... When all is said and done, people will pay more taxes, the economy will create fewer jobs, the government will spend more money, and the American people will be worse off."
Is it necessary to point out how utterly wrong that prediction turned out to be? Most Americans did not pay more taxes, the economy created millions more jobs, the deficit was sharply reduced, and people were better off by every measure of economic progress, from productivity and profits to homeownership and reduced poverty.
But Gramm was not the kind of economist whose convictions are shaken by evidence, no matter how compelling. So obsessed with protecting bankers from government oversight was he that when Clinton tried to place stronger controls on terrorist money laundering, Gramm opposed even that measure as a "totalitarian" incursion.
Before he retired from the Senate in 2002, he wrote the Gramm-Bliley bill, an act broadly deregulating the financial industry -- and now blamed by many economists for the epidemic of speculation and fraud that has shaken the global economy.
Hell if Gramm is focused on we might even be able to hang terrorism financing around McCains 'country first' neck, as well!!
RobM
The Enron debacle was a matter of deregulation in the commodity markets and Gramm is guilty of it. The real debacle of Enron is that everyone in that company was offered stock as part of the match as an employee. If you took stock instead of cash you received a larger dollar committment as stock. Damn near everybody in that company took the stock and then they really got stupid they committed their personal contribution to Enron Stock. That is called no Diversification(all your eggs in one basket). When the stock collapsed because of the scandal of cooking their books people lost big time. Worse they could not sell the stock because of the rules.
If you have an IRA, SEP, KEOGH anything that is called qualified money you have to spread it around the asset classes you are offered. It does effect your return because the costs of holding multiple account is costly until you reach a given dollar level. BUT IT PROTECTS YOUR ASS FROM A TOTAL MELTDOWN OF ONE ASST CLASS.
whiterosebuddy
Yes, they do! I thought I remembered that Phil Gramm and his legislation was at the bottom of the mortgage financial market meltdown, the energy Enron fiasco as well as the S&L debacle, that McCain was involved with ..recall the "Keating Five"?
This is the type of economic issue Obama needs to be hammering parTICularly with the foreclosure rates and mortage industry collapse.
Phil Gramm's economic advice and bills are behind it all.

This is the kind of stuff that Obama needs to hang around McCain's neck!! Especially since Gramm is the one who called us a nation of whiners and is presently advising McCain on the economy...which McCain has said he himself knows nothing about'

Interesting article http://www.alternet.org/story/95825/ I Spent Years as a POW with John McCain, and His Finger Should Not Be Near the Red Button
One interesting excerpt: I furthermore believe that having been a POW is no special qualification for being President of the United States. The two jobs are not the same, and POW experience is not, in my opinion, something I would look for in a presidential candidate...
I can verify that John has an infamous reputation for being a hot head. He has a quick and explosive temper that many have experienced first hand. Folks, quite honestly that is not the finger I want next to that red button.
It is also disappointing to see him take on and support Bush's war in Iraq, even stating we might be there for another 100 years. For me John represents the entrenched and bankrupt policies of Washington-as-usual. The past 7 years have proven to be disastrous for our country. And I believe John's views on war, foreign policy, economics, environment, health care, education, national infrastructure and other important areas are much the same as those of the Bush administration.
I'm disappointed to see John represent himself politically in ways that are not accurate. He is not a moderate Republican. On some issues he is a maverick. But his voting record is far to the right. I fear for his nominations to our Supreme Court, and the consequent continuing loss of individual freedoms, especially regarding moral and religious issues. John is not a religious person, but he has taken every opportunity to ally himself with some really obnoxious and crazy fundamentalist ministers lately. I was also disappointed to see him cozy up to Bush because I know he hates that man. He disingenuously and famously put his arm around the guy, even after Bush had intensely disrespected him with lies and slander. So on these and many other instances, I don't see that John is the "straight talk express" he markets himself to be.
msmartin
Well, finally, the Democrats are bucking up. I'm pleased at what I've seen today. Barbara Boxer would not let Kay Hutchison get away with the republicans lies and spin. She discussed McCains record on the minimum wage, the highway bill and the water bill.
This is what they need to do. Tell the truth about the issues and not be talked down
Sepia
What show was Boxer on?

Robert Gibbs handled business on Late Edition. He did not let Wolf Shitzer and the republican surrogate talk over him though they tried really hard. He ended it by saying the ethics violation investigation would bring out the truth about Sarah Palin. He was good.
I disagree with all the hand wringing over Palin. It is much better to ignore her. If we underestimate her and demand that she be brought before the press, expectations are lowered and if she doesn't break down and sob, then everyone will think she's great.
That's how it works. The media is in the bag for the Republicans, and will try their level best to make them look great and make us look weak.
whiterosebuddy
Yeah, that was the one question I completely agreed with how Obama answered George.
Hahaha, I laughed when George tried to get him to answer anything about Palin's qualifications, he threw it back at George and said he would let the media ask her those quesions..hahahahaha..knowing full well they can't, haven't and most likely aren't.
McCain is a sidekick and Palin is a Perpetrator....
obama and Biden need to get busy framing them both into short and sweet talking points.
Let me tell you why mcCain is a sidekick and not a maverick...this is how he voted.
Let me tell you why Palin is a perpetrating extremist...she believes in teaching creationism, she believes rapist and fathers can select whomever they want to be mothers including their own daughers.
Palin the pittbull needs to be demolished by Biden on the trail.
Val
The Obama team are all on point today. I watched several programs this morning and they were stating your points on why they are not mavericks and cited his voting record with specifics. They noted Palin was an extremist (not in that specific term) and said why, they stated she lied on the bridge to nowhere, earmarks etc. and they stated clearly that they are completely aware that the McCain campaign prefers that the attention shift from issues to things that are not relevant.
They were all on point. It was a thing of beauty. I hope they keep it up.
George Stephanopolous is carrying McCain's water like he's an honorary Fox News 'journalist.' He wanted Obama to "admit he was wrong" about the surge but AT NO TIME have Republicans, Bush and McCain, included been heckled to admit they were wrong.
No. Stephanopolous, etc. keep talking about mindless concepts of "victory" promoted by their Republican agenda setting politicians.
Sepia
I agree. I'm sick of all this talk about surge as if that was the FIRST and ONLY tactic that was used. These talking heads and "journalists" completely forget that we were also PAYING folks not to attack, so what happens when the money runs out?
BTW, our soldiers are still being killed in Iraq, but the surge is working. Riiiight.
Let me add that AT NO TIME has the media interrogated McCain and demanded that he admit he is wrong for being against time tables for withdrawal.
So McCain hasn't had to "ADMIT HE WAS WRONG" about the war to begin with and doesn't have to say those three words, "I was wrong" that they want to con Obama into saying just so they can use it against him.
taritac
That's right, Nquest. Obama should have turned it right around on him and made that point about McCain.
The more I think about this, the more anxious I'm getting. Obama should have spent all last week retooling his campaign for the post-convention run up to the election. Instead he sounds the same.
GET MAD, BARACK!!!!
How can we get this message to him?
taritac
I was thinking the same thing. He is definitely carrying his water. I am sick of Stephanopoulus. I think he has made it his personal mission to see McCain enter the White House. The Round Table guests just fawned over the Republican ticket and all but ignored Obama and Biden.
whiterosebuddy
Yes, they did fawn over the GOP ticket...except the one highlight was when David Brooke actually called Palin TRAILER TRASH!!..I could not beleive he repeated what he had received in his emails...I did not ever think I would hear someone on a major news program upchuck that large numbers of people consider TRAILER TRASH.
As far as for Obama's interview. Barack needs to STOP being conversational!! He needs to develop talking points and stick to them. Especially when it came to that quesion on McCain voting 90% with Bush being flipped into "Barry" u voted 97% with your party. I wanted to jump through the TV when Obama said George you are trying to CONFLATE 2 different things. STOP IT!!! The masses do not understand the term CONFLATE!!
Break it the phuck down Barack,...don't use LARGE uncommon words. Say simply he is SPINNING the question!! People understand that. Tell them that meant you OPPOSED Bush 97% of the time UNLIKE McCain who AGREED with Bush 90% of the time!! Geez!! ....Then enumerated what you OPPOSED or I should say LIST it...Obama is suppose to RUN OVER Stepinfetchinopolous at the point like a friggin PITBULL withOUT lipstick and say that meant you voted FOR Energy conservation, you voted FOR insuring Children, you voted FOR not giving up civil liberties, you voted FOR not torturing our enemies and you voted FOR medical care for our VETERANS...all the things McCain OPPOSED by voting WITH Bush!!
Barack is pissin me OFF. And I was even angrier when he let Stepinfetchinopoulos get away with calling him BARRY...that was a complete DIS.
Obama also needs to learn how to spin this you were WRONG on the Surge and that he is OPPOSED to Victory. What he needs to say is that if the Surge is working why are we STILL there? Why are the troops not coming home George? If the Surge WORKED and we have VICTORY why the hell does McCain say the troops can't come home?
Then ...he can go into his 2 word answer...because in 2 words George MISSION UNACCOMPLISHED!!..Those 2 words FORCE additional inquiry.
Dayum...how come Obama has not figured out how to give a simplistic answer and MAKE them DEMAND detail!. When you simplify the answer and they do not hear what they want they are FORCED to DIGG Deeper...and thEN you get the opportunity to explain. But first, you have to go on OFFENSE! Make their asses scramble for pete's sake...make them ask & frame the question the way YOU need it in order to say what you want to convey.
Obama needs to start saying that McCAIN voted AGAINST new Energy plans for solar, wind and nuclear. McCain voted against that by voting with Bush but now he says he is FOR alternative Energy...when he has OPPOSED it. Force McCain to defend his record for pete's sake.
Obama needs to say that Change we can believe in..means more jobs, more bridges, more schools and more tax cuts for the middle class....while McCain will maintain the status quo..that is more of the SAME change that McCain wants to call Change.
Obama needs to hit HARDER. He also needs to run on Clinton's economic record. He needs to show that it was the DEMOCRATS that brought prosperity and the BUSHES that brought recession and outsourcing. He needs to say that it was the DEMOCRATS who brought 100 Million jobs under Clinton and Bush who LOSS 3.5Million jobs. He needs to say that it was the DEMOCRATS who build a 3 TRILLION dollar SURPLUS and the GOP and Bush who brought us a 3 BILLION and growing defecit.
It is now DEMOCRATS vs. GOP...and Obama has a RECORD to run on!!
They do not...and McCain's 90% voting record proves he is not a reformer..he is not a maverick...he is a SIDEKICK!!
ARRRRGH...I am so madddd.
Michelle
The Republicans raised a lot of energy with their lies and ugly last week. For some people, including myself, this situation is literally painful to experience. This pain, this tension, this incoherent fury, this horror at what could happen with this election.
I could be wrong, but whiterosebuddy, your comment feels to me like an outpouring of pain and fury going in the WRONG direction.
whiterosebuddy
Michelle, I can accept that. You are probably right. I am upset and frustrated and just plain pissed about this Palin and the media black out as well as their complicity in allowing mcCain's lies to go un rebutted.
I have no hope that the media will do their jobs so all I can do is exhort Obama to kick some butt!!
I do think it is needed though, cause I think lots of folks feel like me AND I think the folks he has to reach now..want to see some fire in his belly.
I apologize though to all the supporters here @ J&J having to listen to me vent.
taritac
I'm mad too!! When is he going to play the game??!! He's got to at this point. He needs to understand that no one wants to hear policy prescriptions at this point. The one thing that one of the talking heads said today (can't remember what show) is that NO ONE IS INTERESTED IN SOLUTIONS!!! They just want to know that you understand their problems. They don't understand the solutions. They want to be able to trust that you know the solution and they don't have to be involved.
God, I've been praying all morning. Barack has got to find his ball sack and realize that these media people don't want anything more than to see him go down in flames.
Unfortunately, I think they've got their knife, with Barack mistakenly sayng, "my Muslim faith." It's going to go viral, then the MSM will just have to cover it incessantly because people are talking about it. I am way worried.
Sepia
Unfortunately, I think they've got their knife, with Barack mistakenly sayng, "my Muslim faith."
To his credit, ol' Georgie boy immediately said, "You mean your Christian faith" and allowed Obama to correct himself. I don't think the right will be able to get away with this.
BTW, I thought he did well when Georgie questioned him about voting with his party, but I definitely see what you and whiterosebuddy mean about using simplistic language. Like Jay-Z said, "I dumb down for my audience and double my dollars / they criticize me for it; but they all yell "holla!"
delfinajones
Sepia: Just got back--love the Jay-Z quote.Hope Barack is listening!
Barack is playing the game his way, and is doing just fine.

I could personally use a chill pill perscription.
A part of what is contributing to our alarmism is the continuous & blatantly biased spin in the media that we are subjected to. And as a news junkie, how can you avoid it? I'm going to have to fire CNN once & for all. I may have to totally fast from tv, because no matter where you go there is someone offensive talking. We may be ODing on MSM lies and negativity.
That said, I enjoyed Fareed Zakaria's show today and his guest. I'm trying to figure out if if there is any particular agenda in this show, and if so, what it is.
There is a lot of bad news today regarding issue #1. We're in a recession. All this negativity is having a bad influence on people. It's time to turn off the tv forreal.
whiterosebuddy
Teacher you are sooooo riiiight!!
It is time for a news junkie timeout. I had to take one during the primaries too..when HRC was throwing the kitchen sink and the media was defending Billiary.

I am tv free as I type these words. I just can't take it. It is putting me in the mood for intoxicants, and I am not one to intoxicate myself (wrong image for my kids). So when it gets to that, I have to realize it's time for a change.
Don't let them continue to assult your mind and soul. Turn it off, Whiterosebuddy.
taritac
Well, I hope you are right, Craig. I am literally on the verge of tears.
thanks, Taritac for getting us the video. But, I thought he just said it by mistake or something when attempting to speak about his faith. This is a bit more palatable. I think he intended to say it in that way and didn't consider the consequences fully. He shouldn't have spoken in that way; nor chosen all of those $50 dollar words. But, this won't stop ignorant folks form sending an e-mail just like ignorant folks I know sending pictures of Palin in that fake bikini picture. I think Barack may have just helped fortify McCain's base. But, like Craig I don't think this is something MSM will have to cover. But, I am praying with you and whiterosebuddy.
Michelle
THANK YOU Craig.

Agree- he should not answer their question but use the time to make a statement he wants to make. Repugs are trained to do this.

I agree. He needs to get back that "enough!" attitude he had at the convention. He better get ready for the debates. He better fight with the truth and stop responding to bullshit and narrate the story himself.
MCCAIN IS A SIDEKICK.
msmartin
What did you guys think he was going to do considering the ABC debate that he moderated with Gibson where they talked about everything but the real issues for the first half of the debate?
LOVED his response to a question on "when does life begin," proposed to him because he is a Catholic. He said "life begins for me at conception, but in a pluralistic society, I cannot determine that for for everyone because of my commitment for the separation between Church and State."
I'm starting to develop an inappropriate fondness for Mr. Biden...
Sepia
Biden was just all kinds of awesome! Brokaw tried his best to trip him up(particularly with the bankruptcy bill), but he was as smooth as a Chi-Town pimp!
JJai
that is completely logical. I could never understand why Barack answers as he does.
parker404
His response was absolutely perfect. During the entire interview, it was clear that Biden KNOWS the issues and actually cares about solving problems.
whiterosebuddy
I saw that Evita. Biden gave a great answer...he said that his FAITH was his answer and that others FAITH do not beleive as his does, protestant, muslim and jews..may be just as devout but can differ based on their FAITH as to when life begins. Ergo, he cannot challenge anyone on the basis of FAITH.
Excellent answer. I really liked that he said that we should not criminalize abortions when that decision is private and based on individuals faith beliefs.
Which as you mentioned goes directly to separation of church and State. No church can impose their beliefs on the entire society.
I also liked how Biden said that the banking industry contributes only 2% to his total campaign contributions and that he is the poorest US Senator so no one can say that he is bought and paid for by the lobbyists in banking. That was a great answer as well about his son Beau's job with MNBA being no more than he would have made as a graduate of Yale Law...as opposed to it being some pay-off to Biden as a US Senator.
Biden handled Brokaw well.
Obama handled Stepinfetchinopoulous well when asken about Palin, he flipped it back at George and told him he would wait for the media to ask Palin about her experience as CinC..lol lol lol....she won't even TALK to the press!

As a few of JJP's regulars post video links, I hope someone can track this one down.

McCain on Face the Nation. Palin will be available on Face the Nation First. At end Shiver tried to get him to commit to next week. McCain didn't quite take the bait.
We will never see her in an unscripted moment till the VP debates.
At end announced show was recorded on Sat in Colo.
msmartin
McCain on Face the Nation - doing horribly IMO. He was asked about the "community organizer" insult. Shiffer said he knew community organizers and thought the work was good and asked why Palin and Giuliana would denigrate community organizing and he said Palin was upset that the Obama camp said she was a small town mayor, bet they'll take that out of stump speech.
Shiffer stated that out of 3200 republican delegates only 23 were AA's and asked how they could continue to be the party of "white people". McCain answered with some garbled bs.
Sepia
he said Palin was upset that the Obama camp said she was a small town mayor,
Aww! Her wittle fweelings were hurt? Poor baby!
Wow! Shiffer said they were a party of the white people?
malletgirl02
Actually I think the whole small time mayor thing came into the discourse actually started while Obama was selecting his VP. Rove said that Obama was going to make a political choice by choosing Kaine. Rove mentioned that Before being the governor of Virginia, completely skipping over his time as LT governor, that Kaine was only the mayor of Richmond. Rove sneered that Richmond was "only" the 127 largest city in the US.
msmartin
You should have seen the tape from the daily show. Rove was saying Kaine was the governor of a small state, yada yada then roll tape to him defending criticcism that Palin was smal state governor and mayor of what 500? And she f*(ked up all their money. Gimme a break GTFOH.
TruthSeeker
So, America would have to deal with a President prone to "Upset" duringing tense foreign policy crises.
CNN flashed the numbers/percentages of non-white delegates at the DNC with AA's composing some 24% (non-whites totaled 44% of the delegates). They even noted how Native Americans made up 3% of the DNC delegates. I didn't see similar "fact"oids on CNN for the RNC. I wonder why...
Now, did Shafer ask McCain about the skeleton thin number of Black Republicans speaking at the convention -- let alone Black Democrats with switchin' party stories like Pam or Barney Smith not to be confused with Smith Barney, of course.
msmartin
No, of course not, journalist ask a few difficult questions of the republicans so they appear to be journalist, but then let them carry on endlessly with their responses and stump speech talking points, unlike the Democrats who they challenge constantly on their answer as if it were a debate. I saw it this morning with Stephanopolus and Shiffer. I see it all the time.

I am increasingly getting depressed about this election as a result of this Palin pick. We all know racism is alive but to what extent. I am amazed at how people makes excuses for this woman with respect to her daughter being pregnant. Now the media is practically ignoring Obama. Folks this will boil down to GOTV.
taritac
Micheline,
I completely agree. I am getting really depressed. I just watched Obama on This Week with George Stephanopoulus, and he was okay. Stephanopoulus kept pressing him on the surge issue, when Barack has answered that question REPEATEDLY over the last month.
When they went to the Round Table, they completely ignored his interview and the entire discussion was about Palin, how great she is for the ticket, how great McCain's biography is, how McCain has a chance to win in November, how compelling his call for CHANGE is [WTF??!!].
These people were literally fawning. I couldn't believe it. It really is blatant at this point. People were just looking for a reason not to support Obama, and Palin is that reason. They were so excited. Not one person had a kind word to say about the Democrats.
rikyrah
know hope.
they were in the tank for Hillpatine as much as they are for McCain.
we know how that wound up
msmartin
Don't be discouraged. This is part of a large portion of corporatist MSM role. They wan't McCain in the whitehouse to avoid being taxed on their enormous incomes (Bush provided shelter for them and their money) and they will do whatever they can do to help to get McCain/Palin to the whitehouse.
It won't work, the american people are concerned about their financial futures and Palin does nothing for that issue. Be patient she will wear off and they will be forced to talk about something else.
Booky
This is how Barack Obama should handle the surge issue:
The surged worked? Good. Bring our Troops home. NOW!
Or, Who says the surge worked? The media? Who told the media the surge was workded?? The Bush administration? You mean the same administration that took us to war based on DEAD WRONG intelligence to look for WMD that was NOT there and without an exit plan?
Who says the surge is working? Answer: The media and the Bush administration.
Who trusts the media and the Bush administration?
taritac
Whatever he says, it should be a 5-second soundbite reply. Say it and move on. He gets into explaining and it just sounds like he's equivocating. We're beyond the point where nuanced answers work. The undecideds are basing their decision on a beauty contest.
delfinajones
He needs to create word pictures--Repubs screw you. Dems help you.
Yeah, Barack should go down a list of Bush=McCain promises regarding jobs and the economy and say, "... and you got screwed!"
Bush promised to reach across the aisle "... and you got screwed!" Bush/McCain declared, "Mission Accomplished" and... "the American people got screwed!"
"Look at this mess!"
"We're talking about bailing out Fannie Mae... but John McCain and our Republican friends said to hell with everyday Americans who got screwed by predatory lenders."
"Every time you turn around, with people like Bush/McCain... you get screwed."

Micheline, CraigHickman made a post yesterday about Barack Obama having a talk in PA in areas otherwise known as the Alabama of PA. Because of the STRENGTH of Obama's organizing, the campaign has strong voter registration and turn out to these events. At this event they expected 5,000 to attend but 15,000 people showed up- with only 2 days notice!
The energy and info is getting out there to the people who will eventually vote. I believe more people in the fence are appalled by the pick because of her over the top conservative views. That's not how you win independents.
Palin is weak- that's why they are hiding her.
Get fired up! WE CAN DO THIS! But remember it will take all of us. Because I have unlimited calling, I make calls for the campaign often. Something as little as that makes a difference. Focus on what YOU CAN DO. :) Stay up!

We need a quick response team to counteract some of this crap, even if it seems unimportant. Palin supports the extreme platform of the Republican party which is in effect curtailing womens rights--she is not a feminist in any sense. But the Repubs call her that. Not letting her daughter use birth control is child abuse and poor parenting. She can't superrvise her family how can she supervise the country. She has 5 kids but she risked having a downs child by not taking precaurions? THIS WOMAN IS NOT A FEMINIST!!!!
Teacher
Right. what if she gets pregnant again, potentially while in office? She went back to work 3 days after "giving birth" to her baby.
I consider myself to be pro-woman, and I think there are biological differences and different stages of life where a woman is called upon to put the best interest of the child above her own desires. It is very tricky/slippery, though a baby has physiological & emotional needs that are best met by a mother. A human baby is not the same as a kitten. I am pro-choice, but once someone decides to have a baby, I think it's needs should be met. I guess Palin's beliefs are the opposite of mine. She thinks that babies deserve to be born, but after that they have to take what they get. I really love babies.
When I was in college, I thought there were no differences between males & females. Myself and another lady had a chance to pour the metal for our sculptures by hand (with our backs). We were both petite, and she was more petite than me. So we had to lift this heavy crucible with molten metal in it, plus the holder. We did it only by the grace of God. We basically endangered peoples lives to prove a feminist point. To this day I am thankful that we didn't drop the red hot, hundreds of degrees in temperature crucible containing molten metal and hurt ourselves and others. So now I have a different opinion. Every man or woman can't or shouldn't do any and everything. It's not always possible. There are times we need to accept our limitations as humans, and there is no shame in that.
GreenLadyHere

Yes, it is very unsettling, bordering on being negligent or abusive. I can't believe james dobson is endorsing her & this philosophy. She's treating her children like they are the unfortunate result of a booty call, which is why I'm pro-choice. If I didn't like her before, I really don't like her now. No wonder her daughter is looking for love in all the wrong places. She's looking for something she only got scheduled around her mother's work schedule. Pitiful.
jelana
Studies have been done on mother's who don't bond with their babies. It is definitely not in the child's best interest. I agree with you on the pro choice. Why have children if you don't really want them? Birth control is a much better idea. Hi all, I'm wondering what you think of this idea. After the last two weeks, I think I see the strength and beauty of the positive, "Yes we can" Obama campaign. The Republicans want to draw us back into the culture war, because that's the only way they can win. I don't want to play a losing game. Instead, I want to focus on what makes Obama -- and Democrats -- a force for positive change in 2008.
What about a VIDEO that portrays REPUBLICANS as the ANGRY, MARGINAL, and ANTISOCIAL party that they've become? We have so much footage from last week of angry white delegates shouting "Drill, Baby, Drill!" It's a pretty sick warcry, not just because it's pushing for a disastrous policy, but because of how it appropriates the Watts race riots and "Burn Baby Burn!" (The fact that the only black speaker at the RNC led them in this chant is, to say the least, ironic).
Now, I don't know your opinion about Watts, but the point is that most white middle Americans do not think highly of that kind of politics, whatever the cause. Associating the Republicans with an angry, violent, 60s-style feeling will not do them any good.
We need to remind people that they're not just voting for two people. They're voting for an entire party and what it stands for.
So, what do you think of a video that would compare/contrast the RNC with angry mobs from the 1960s and 1970s? And then offer up our very different mood and behavior from the DNC, one that looks forward rather than back?

OK, I admit that I'm pretty ignorant, but in researching the Detroit riots of 1967, I discovered that the governor of Michigan at the time was... George Romney. Wow. The 1960s is the gift that keeps on giving.

I get the lack of counter attack and protection of the candidate. But that is an institutional trait of the party at the top. And as much as I try to hold my tongue and not free lance, I am disciplined enough to take orders and follow talking points. WHERE ARE MY MARCHING ORDERS? We are not Japanese samurai beholden to our lord and master to the point of seppuku.
My preference is Napoleon's standing orders "March to the sound of cannon fire." The Republicans are firing cannons. I there: What is the order.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck strikes again!
Here is a video of her at a luncheon to honor Cindy McCain. In the video, she attacks Michelle Obama saying the following:
"Cindy came into our hair and make-up room as fresh as can be, and unlike another wife of a political candidate-who shall remain nameless. She didn't come with a list of topics we weren't allowed to touch. Nope, that's because she has nothing to hide"
I'd love to see whether the other View hosts call her out on this. It goes beyond politics. As a business matter it strikes me as a bad move on Elizabeth's part.
SHE'S TWO-FACED! That's how Elizabeth comes across with a performance like this. She had her chance to confront Michelle when she was on their show. She could not and did not have the guts to say that to Michelle Obama's face. So instead of being an adult, she pretends to respect Michelle on the air, but then turns around and gets all "Sean Hannity-like" when she's not in mixed company.
Again, she comes off as two-faced and backstabbing. That's bad for business because people won't trust The View to do fair interviews in the future.
I'd LOVE to see Whoopi, Barbara, Joy and Sherri confront her on this. But my guess is Elizabeth might just start crying once they bring it up (she's good for that).
Sepia
I doubt Barbara, Joy or Whoopi will say anything about this because it's clearly evident that they are being muzzled by Republican exec producer of the show, Bill Gedde. I've heard Joy on Air America and I read Whoopi's blog and the difference is like night and day. Those ladies are very knowledgeable when it comes to politics and could figuratively slit Hasselbeck's throat when she starts spewing Fox News talking points, but they don't.
I've emailed the video to KO and suggested that he put her on his Worst Persons list.
Town
Is she saying that Michelle came into wardrobe and makeup "unfresh?"
Why isn't Cindy talking about her drug addiction?
Theft?
Consistent pattern of lying?
Cheating with McCain while married to his first wife?
Nothing to hide? Let's see what's in Hasselbitch's closet.
delfinajones
See how Repubs always have the back o f their candidate? They don't feel obligated to appear to play fair. We should email Hasselbeck and ask why we didn't hear about Cindy stealing drugs from the pharmacy of the health organization she bankrolls. She was caught but not prosecuted.
The woman in this article praises Palin's pro-life stances of having a Down Syndrome baby and for Bristol having her kid. However, the auther says that Palin does not exemplify being "pro-family" because she put her career ahead of caring for her special needs kid, dragged her daughter's business in front of everyone, and will be MIA when her daughter and son probably need her most.
This is exactly my problem with Palin's family life. As a feminist, I reject the idea of people questioning women's family choices, but her actions still strike me as particularly cold-hearted.
I agree! This is what rubs me the wrong way. Her husband is an oil man, not the primary caregiver. If this was the dynamic for their family for years, then I'd say fine. But dude is going to be working too! Makes me sad, really.

Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama criticized Republican John McCain's approach to Social Security on Saturday, saying it would undermine the government program aimed mainly at retirees.
Obama said McCain's campaign has suggested trimming Social Security benefits and raising the eligibility age, according to prepared remarks of his speech to a gathering of the AARP. Obama was addressing the group via satellite.
McCain has not specifically embraced such plans. But by saying "everything is on the table" in discussing changes to Social Security, he has opened himself to such criticisms from Democrats.

taritac: Good merning[Madea - style :>) ] Yes, I'm trying ta see what the MSM is talkin' about at this time. :>) :>)
Watched Rick Sanchez on CNN, he APPEARED ta be SUPPORTING Mr. Obama, 'cause he was PRESSING his guest [forgot name] for specifics when he was attacking Mr. Obama!! That was NOVEL, in light of the fact that I wrote him a gently scathing e-mail a couple of months ago for ATTACKING Mr. Obama!! Interesting. :>) :>) :>)
I, also, see that the WAPost is almost DEVOID [at least the early edition] of campaign/election news. :>) :>) Interesting. :>) :>)
HuffPost: Need ta check. But they ran the same headlines FOREVA!! :>) :>)

rikyrah: This article gives some HARSH economic DATA. It's BAD! And SAD!! :>(
IMHO: A low economic state could decrease interest in the election. Therefore, we must ENCOURAGE each other [friends, family, etc] to VOTE!!! :>) :>)
GreenLadyHere
rikyrah: The TITLE of this article is mis-leading. Mr. Obama said that the TARGET of HIS campaign is "McAncient" and his continuing of Shrub's policies!!
Clinton lost no time, attacking Palin moments after John McCain delivered his presidential acceptance speech in St Paul, Minnesota, last week. Reporters’ BlackBerrys buzzed with her verdict. “No way, no how, no McCain-Palin,” she said.
Officially, Clinton will not go head-to-head with Palin, a self-proclaimed hockey mom and “pitbull in lipstick”.
The Obama camp wants to keep the focus on McCain’s supposed continuation of the Bush years and his skimpy policies for reviving the economy and improving healthcare, rather than on his running mate.
One thing is for sure, the next President WILL be able to say N-U-C-L-E-A-R!! :>) :>)
No more NU-CU-LAR!!! aaaaarrrrgggg!! :>)
rikyrah
this whole Russia mess is for McCain
Teacher
Well lets continue to pray that he isn't elected, because he would get us into some stuff that we can't handle. Putin dares us to start some mess. That would really make his day.

NOTE TO MYSELF: This article was suppose to ALSO be in this comment. It was suppose to be a "2-fer"! :>) :>)
rikyrah: SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! :>) :>) The more the WORLD sees this 1st FAMILY, the more they will get USE TO THEM. 'cause they'll be moving into their "NEW WHITE HOUSE" in January 2009!!
