They just want to win, and they probably feel they can manipulate Sarah Palin easier than Romney or Huckabee, because, after all, Romney and Huckabee are MEN and presumed to be capable of independent thinking, while Sarah Palin appears to be an air-head in terms of political thought.

McCain can't dump her w/o losing the base. It is highly unlikely Palin has moved the electorate(see Pollster.com). her religious views are too extreme for most women.
They see through her hypocrisy while quietly understanding the impossible situation she has put herslf in.

I also agree that she likely won't win too many other voters. Her positions are so right wing, Independent voters would likely find them extreme.

Obviously, the purpose of her nomination is to win the election, and McCain hasn't given one thought to how he or she will govern. I don't think McCain necessarily sees a role for her, but the right wingnuts do. They expect her to push their religious agenda behind the scenes, ala Cheney.
