Of course to do this the republicans would need the cooperation of the mainstream media. But they seem to have it in the sense that it is in the best interest of the media for the race to appear close. More drama, tension, etc.

It seems to me that efforts to monitor and challenge actual messing (or attempted messing) with voters and voter registrations, in real-time, might be useful. I don't know if the “election protection” people I linked to are effective at this or not. And of course they can only be as effective as the existing laws allow them to be. I spent most of election afternoon/evening 2004 outside polling places as a volunteer for them. It was uneventful where I was stationed. It was also very cold but that's another story. I remember hearing that Kerry was polling in the lead and for most of the night I thought he was probably going to win.

I agree that the illusion that the race is close is a key to the republicans stealing it. Without that, the stealing becomes too obvious.
