Truthfully I find phonebanking a blast once I'm actually in it, the most important thing is to be yourself and remember that you have two goals (1) identifying supporters and (2) providing a friendly face for the campaign. It seems stupid, but the very fact of having someone call increases the chance that person will vote for your guy — persuasion is as much the effort as what you say. So don't get too hung up if you aren't smooth, the main thing is to be REAL.

I'm assuming your best bet is in Virginia, unless you have personal networks elsewhere (PA jumps to mind).

It's very likely your local Obama campaign office is organizing phonebanks and trips out to VA. (Our local one here is doing it for NH). So you might check in with them too. It's more fun to do these things with your neighbors. Oh, and as for why to reach out to neighbors — these are all people who have signed up on the website as being interested in helping out. If you can convince even 2-3 of them to volunteer, that's a huge multiplier on your effort!

I'd love to share them with everyone but don't have the resources to stuff envelopes for much of the day (art gallery to run – two kids to raise) but if you have the resources to distribute them, I'd be happy to send you some. Check my linked blog, which isn't usually a political site, it's an art site. But these times call for extraordinary measures.

I hear people in the next room doing the phone banking and some are short, because people don't want to be bothered. And then I hear these long conversations. The phone bankers are giving their personal stories. One thing I do notice, is that the volunteers are always nice. End the conversation with a positive.
