You're right, no one stands on principle anymore. John McCain is a joke. He says whatever he thinks will get him more votes... he's not even bothering to be deft about it. The avowed deregulator is now a reformer who believes we need more regulation.

The "wars" in Iraq and Afghanistan are approaching 1 trillion dollars (872.6 Billion). We were promised that the the "war" in Iraq would pay for itself... can anyone believe what ideologues like George Will say?

Gov't minds who manage the world... will just print more "worthless" paper money. The "real" libertarian is Ron Paul who advocates bringing back the "gold" standard. He says that the Federal Reserve printing money could collapse the economy. Maybe he has a point, but his former hero Reagan ushered in deregulation to our detriment.

Yet "conservatives" are still clinging to their "no tax hikes" stance. No sacrifices for those at the top who have benefited from deregulation and gamed the system. All the burden is to be born by the American tax payers; the "little guys" who must "bail out" these robber barons.
  • Bluecat
I love that McCain is all "trying to clean up this economic mess". Someone needs to loudly remind America that he was part of the S&L scandals back in the day, as one of the Keating 5. He survived the scandal without being convicted of anything except "poor judgement", but if you ask me his judgement has never improved.
  • GreenLadyHere
    Bluecat: Hey! :>)

    ONE - TWO - THREE - FOUR - FIVE! KEATING 5!!

    OBAMA-BIDEN '08!

Now lets see where that stupid laugh of his is right now. He probably would blame this mess on Obama not having townhall meetings with him. What a joke this man is. He wouldn't fix the King Holiday back in Arizona, what makes you think he know what is right or wrong with the nation?

He is 6 points behind Palin!!!

    ;D
  • Chantalle
BTW, George Will, "Are You Better Off?"
  • Chantalle
Never mind what Charlie Gibbs says; GEORGE WILL says, "It's a conversion of convenience, some will say."

That's kinda harsh coming from a bespectacled, bow-tied conservative pundit and columnist.
  • hustleandfloe
Must be odd. There's really no place for a George Will, principally, in this iteration of the republican party. I think he's gotta sit libertarian but by strict definition, that not including the Bob Barr versions of imploding stuff.

Our two-party system would work better if we had honest statesmen on either side who disagreed in principle on stuff. It's never been that way: I'm not being nostalgic. But it is true that we can experience times of more or less corruption of our financial and government institutions and I'll be danged if this ain't a low point - the public now having to consistently bail out the private.

Continental Illinois bank, the first time, now seems like the smallest of potatoes... the infusion of 4.5bn to keep this "too big to fail" entity from going under. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continental_Illinois

We now approach a trillion!!! dollar and growing bailout bill. I don't think that even gov't minds who routinely deal in billions for world mgt can really fathom that much money going to this use.

    Senators Obama and Biden:

When Senator McCain is shown to have lied and changed his position on major issues like deregulation and government bailouts, why not just call him a liar and hypocrite?

Maybe Charlie watched his money disappear. Remember how upset he was about capital gains in the ABC debate.

That's what it will take for some people....cha-ching.

Someone over at Kos said they were worried that McCain would sucker punch Barack with a full blown economic plan at the next debate....they think the Repubs could be playing coy now, while letting Barack reveal all his economic cards.

I dunno if that makes sense. McCain has already called for a commission. Those take time, and you wait for their findings before taking action. How could he reasonably stick with the commission idea, yet move forward with a full blown plan? Wouldn't the one defeat the purpose of the other?
  • Anderkoo
"How could he reasonably stick with the commission idea, yet move forward with a full blown plan?"

You use the word "reasonable." McCain isn't very much appealing to reason.
  • djchefron
Who is going to help McCain formulated his plan?Phil Gramm who's legistalion got us in this mess,Carly Fionna who was so incompetent that Hewlett Packard paid her off to just go away before she did any further damage to the company.
  • AnthonyMason
No for nothing, but this economic situation will only worsen as time continues. Heaven forbids McCain and that lady get to be in power. We'd totally be on our own!
