(1) As a matter of political strategy, shake their nuts. There's the substantive issues — e.g. the Road to the Bridge to Nowhere, the Alaskan corruption, Troopergate, etc. That's legit no matter how you slice it. Of course there's the Rove/Penn approach — painting her as “out of the mainstream.” That's where the babies potentially scare off the American moderate middle.

(2) But on that latter front, I would be worried about provoking a culture war that will continue to divide us in ways that just hurt poor people. Sarah Palin's family and personal story is not one of privilege and wealth. Maybe because she's white (but: her husband is partially Native) she might benefit from a double standard, but if so, I wouldn't say it's very much of one. (Do you really think her family's situation causes Wall Street GOPers to admire her grit or freak out? Look what happened to Gov. Jane Swift's baby situation here in “liberal” Massachusetts).

To quote Obama, “In fact, a similar anger exists within segments of the white community. Most working- and middle-class white Americans don't feel that they have been particularly privileged by their race… Just as black anger often proved counterproductive, so have these white resentments distracted attention from the real culprits of the middle class squeeze… And yet, to wish away the resentments of white Americans, to label them as misguided or even racist, without recognizing they are grounded in legitimate concerns – this too widens the racial divide, and blocks the path to understanding.”

“Understanding” is not a great way to win an election, to be sure, but since Reconstruction big-money interests have been brilliant at dividing the white poor from the black poor, and attacking Palin the wrong way could continue that legacy. Rather than point out the “hypocrisy” of white evangelicals who embrace Palin but rebuff inner-city black parents, isn't there a way of equating the two with empathy rather than anger? (Don't confuse the white evangelical grassroots who might genuinely, if naively, embrace a black family in the same situation as Palin with their power-broker spokesmen, just as we shouldn't confuse Al Sharpton with the black community). Remember that the most recent national teen pregnancy scandal happened right here in 92% white Gloucester Mass.

So I guess my conclusion is: unless we really want to throw the mud down in a very calculated play for the American middle while alienating the evangelical Christians — the same ones who are most likely to support an anti-poverty agenda — leave the kids alone.

So. I'm sayin'– get ta steppin' 'cause I have to “MAKE MY LIST; CHECK IT TWICE . . ” and inform Santa to put the “rocks” in the correct “stockings”!!! :>) :>)
