How Much Will Gustav and Ike Affect Gas Supplies? Update From The Oil Drum

Based on what I am seeing now, we are likely to see significant gasoline outages in the next few weeks. These may not be as long-lasting as those with Katrina, but they may temporarily be more severe, at least in some parts of the country. Diesel may or may not be a problem. We are an exporter of diesel, so can theoretically reduce exports if need be. Also distillate (used for diesel) supplies are currently at a more adequate level than are gasoline supplies. Jet fuel stocks seem to be at a relatively adequate level, so shortages may not be a problem.

WOW. Just got my power back on here in Houston and checked out your site to see what the premier blog for blackfolks was covering on the storm and outages and shortages and aid. Guess what, nothing. I guess if no one is screaming incompetence at the gov't it doesn't matter. But never mind.

There's a heck of a set of circumstances gathering round us as you remind us here, kind sir Jack T. Gas prices, esp. due to the shocks of Ike and Gustav, seem set to keep rising. But check this,too, a provision in the Heroes Act of 2008 stating that “anyone voluntarily giving up his or her citizenship will be taxed on all of his assets as if he or she had sold them — paying capital gains on assets that have increased in value, even though they have not been sold.”http://tinyurl.com/4yho6t
Essentially, as the general economic situation worsens, the gov is trying to lock in the wealthy folks most likely to jump ship by jacking their assets with a rough tax, discouraging them from sheltering themselves from the fall in the dollar by breaking camp.

Now, most folks aren't really able to pack up and switch citizenship. That part doesn't apply to us, but the omen does. If the gov is trying to lock in an outlier on the wealth curve, then that means mean times for us in the mean.
Means we ain't seen nothing yet when the gov is buying bulk re-rders of liferafts in the middle of the this titanic voyage. …we may be in for some even bigger shocks than we've seen in the past couple of weeks.
