Over at Nat Turner's Revenge the idea was posited that the Russian slap down of Georgia was the August surprise. It is worse than that. Russia bitch slapped the Bush Presidency right out of its last 162 days. That is bad for the country as a whole.

This is bad for the country because the whole world knows we are in an election cycle. While they are happy we can change leaders easily, they understand a vacuum exists during the election. And everyone knows that if there were ever a time to start acting out this is it. W/ the Russians going dare you I suspect we will soon find others doing the same

It's bad for the country because the intelligence agencies failed worse than Sept 11, 2001. It is not logical to assume that when you have 130 US military and intelligence advisers training the Georgian army that they didn't see the Georgian Army gearing up to go to an all out assault. This is after a ceasefire has been put into place by the Georgian president himself on Wednesday night.

The fact that, the Russian Army , with 300 tanks and armored vehicles not surrogates(N Ossetia militias) came roaring through the tunnel separating N Ossetia and Georgia to "surprise" the Georgian Army, the NSA did not pick up one radio message between their units is unbelievable. The cyber onslaught against Georgia began on Monday according to the McNeil Lehrer report tonight. Jose Nazario said he had informed the FBI about the attacks that had occurred in July . His company-it tracks these things, breaks them down into what they do and try to find the server farm initiating them-figured it out. Hackers looking for info that can be turned into money do not waste their time all the Internet services in one country all at once.

This is bad for the country because the Bush Presidency's view of the world never acknowledged that what other countries considered their interests should be respected. This has come to roost w/ Russia. Russia's entire history is about every body running back and forth, across, and up and down w/ impunity. Every last leaders entire reputation depended upon them protecting Russia from the outsiders. It started w/ the Czars and reached its heights under the Communists.

What is really bad is this is Condi's specialty. In eight years she could not get President Bush to understand that what ever Bush saw in Putin's soul it was driven by this historical perspective. Kosovo was the last straw for Putin. Here was a piece of a sovereign territory spinning of from its home country(we have to skip the nationalistic aspects of both situations moral equivalence issues)which Russia had always supported(they are Slavs) and going out on their own w/ the support of NATO and the US(peacekeeping again). Putin couldn't do anything about it.

So now we are seen as powerless to intercede w/ someone whom has nukes-the centrifuges are humming now, incapable of maintaining a common sense relationship w/ allies in precarious situations and have thrown our European allies to the wolves(heavily dependent on Russia for energy) because we can't watch our own interests.

Robert Gates Sec of Defense was just on CNN. He made it very clear the US is not going to rearm Georgia and the decision to offer Georgia membership in NATO(it comes up again in Dec) will be made by all 26 nations. He also made it clear the Russians were looking for to take advantage of the situation and did so. The US will not being doing anything militarily to turn the situation around.

I have seen arguments for Obama keeping Gates based on slapping down Air Force HQ over sloppy everything, his calling for strengthening the State Dept and by doing so understands that the US has lost its Prestige by not using soft power. Given whom he currently works for ..., but it is something that needs to be pursued. The Democratic bench for Armed Services is very thin, has very few people w/ combat experience and executive level experience in military matters. As much as we look forward to getting out of Iraq and the huge expenditure being there involves, Russia's action keeps security matters forefront.

The one guy I think Obama better get on the horn to is the Representative from SE Pennsylvania who was an Admiral. McCain is going to have many old guard military people out stumping for him about the dangers to the country.

Regardless of previous commitments, SDs only count at the Convention where they have the responsibility to act in the best interests of the party and the country.

EWers provide updates to hundreds of SDs about electability, noting that Senator Clinton finished the primaries with 18 million votes, more than any other candidate ever, was leading in blue and swing states needed to clinch the Electoral College, and leading in polls against McCain. We remind SDs that the more voters learned about Obama, the more they voted for Hillary, and that Obama is now virtually tied in the polls with McCain, not "sealing the deal".

The Democratic Party has no nominee. Its presumptive nominee was selected, not elected, and Mile High Stadium notwithstanding, delegates go to Denver to select the Democratic candidate who can win in November. We ask the Democratic Party to stop delegate intimidation and replacement, and to hold an open convention with a traditional nominating and roll call process such as was afforded Ted Kennedy in 1980 and even Howard Dean in 2004. And when he stepped to Russia - the US was no where to be found. My thought was and I didn't voice all of it -- was think back a few months ago when one of the McCain top advisors said -- McCain needed another war to win this election.

Well Georgia thought McCain had his back as they took his money and now he is singing like a canary. He called out not only Bush (by stating they led him to believe they would help him out and they told him that Russia would not attack) but he is now calling out McCain by name as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if what you say is so. I've been very suspicious of the timing of this. I also remember that statement about McCain needing a war to win. They did set up Georgia. Didn't they tell McCain that they want action, not a bunch of words? Now, why would they address McCain and not Obama? I think you are right that McCain has been in communications with them, and gave assurances.... which is why Saakashvili looks so much in distress. He didn't count on things playing out this way.

But I've been wondering about this 'angry' charge for some time. I'm a little interested in body language and facial expressions and how the subconscious reads that kind of stuff. I do believe it has some racial roots....but I also think that Michelle has very sharply arched eyebrows, they don't taper gently. They look sort of like v's. Also, there are two vertical lines between her brows, which you could interpret as worry, but many do interpret it as anger. It could also be something benign like chronic sinus pressure or weak eye muscles. I think people are reading it as anger because they have no other frame of reference for black women.

I have wondered if she grew her brows in a little and softened the taper, then got some botox to relax the muscles between her brows....If the reaction would be different.

Barack's brows go straight across, with no exaggerated expression..they're sort of neutral looking. The muscles in his face are relaxed.

Cindy has an extremely severe looking face. Very thin lips that she paints bright red. Her eyes are icy, pale blue which are lined with black (inappropriate for an older woman), creating an evil, empty look. Reported back pain has caused the muscles in her face to freeze in a pained expression....and losing weight didn't help either. Her skin is deathly pale. When you look at her, what do you think?:....German dominatrix.

As for McCain, he just looks pale and melted. His irises are unnaturally black, without reflections or depth. As a couple, they paint an image of illness and death.

I think we're reading all this things automatically and overlaying what we consciously believe. If you have a limited racial vocabulary, then the eyebrows spell "angry" only.

Sure. Those basic lines like upturned v's or sharply angled lines represent ideas and could be a precursor to words/writing/language. I think they're called 'ideograms'. Basic lines that represent ideas or emotions Illustrators know to represent anger or surprise on a cartoon, they use upturned v's and sharply angled brows. Water is represented by wavy lines...etc. They escape our conscious notice most of the time and go straight to the limbic system.

In 2006, he began supporting them. In a Washington Times article published on Feb. 27, 2006, Grover Norqhist, president of Americans for Tax Reform said "It's a big flip-flop.:
Longtime Republican tax-cut strategist Larry Hunter said "It looks like a further morphing of McCain into George W.Bush. He's mailing to his list of campaign contributors and now he is supporting the tax cuts. It looks political to me. It runs counter to his whole past behavior. "
When the president's $350 billion tax cut bill accelerated his earlier tax-cut bills and came up for vote in 2006, McCain voted against that too, saying he was "very concerned about the deficit." Norqhist goes on to say "He voted against tax cuts in 2001, 2003, 2004, and 2005, and this year (2006) he's for tax cuts in the reconciliation bill. It looks like he did it for political reasons. No mention of consideration of conditions on the ground.

Now, on his webpage is the following:

Immediately upon taking office, Obama will give his Secretary of Defense and military commanders a new mission in Iraq: ending the war. The removal of our troops will be responsible and phased, directed by military commanders on the ground and done in consultation with the Iraqi government. Sassy Sarah.

She's my favorite singer of all time. There was nothing she couldn't sing and her range was off the charts.

Her voice was smooth, vulgar, sweet, velvety, raunchy, her vibrato so big you could drive a truck through it.

I love everything about her singing.

My hard bopping stepdad had her albums. Especially this one.

Gave it 'back' to my dad last year. He was thrilled.

That album and Live in Japan are arguably the best live recordings of any jazz vocalist I've ever heard.

My favorite non-live recording is Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown. Her rendition of "April in Paris" is otherworldly.

I'm ashamed to say I only discovered the beauty of Sarah Vaughn's voice listening to Quincy Jones "Back on the Block" CD.........her voice is like slowly pouring chocolate. They really dont make'em like tha t anymore. I guess that's why I'm such a Chrisette Michelle fan. She's an old soul for sure.
