O.K. I saw a reference to this incident, soo, I went searching [listen to me :>)] to see who this "heckler" was. Couldn't find him.
But if he was a different race/ethnic group/ethnicity/clan/social unit of some ilk, than the other "Hecklers", I'd like to make a proposal for a NEW TELEVISION PROGRAM, to wit- "AMERICAN "HECKLER" IDOL!"
This show is going to have all the excitement of the original "Idol" shows:
-auditions in all 50 STATES[to cover the territory that Mr. Obama will cover as he campaigns]
-a 3 person panel, consisting of at least one person who will constantly say "DOG"
-applicants from all racial/ethnic groups/ethnicities/clans/sub-groups/societal units, etc. Bring your tired, poor huddled masses!
And note that 2 groups have been representin' so far! ALL others are cordially encouraged! This is an EQUAL OPPORTUNITY, AFFIRMATIVE ACTION, REVERSE RACISM, etc, contest!!! NO ONE will be left out!!!
No TALENT required!! :>) :>)
Whiners - OOPs! Winners will perform on the planet Mars, when the next space mission occurs. There is water in them thar hills, so you'll survive!!
Lawd! Lawd! Lawd!! I need ta rest! That Conference took more out of me than I thought!! :>) :>)
Hello: Well It was a rough 1.5 days - being away from JJP!! It is waaaaay to good ta be back!!
I'm not going to make a statement like one of my students, who was a habitual truant! One day, after a week of absences[again :>)], he asked me: "DID I MISS ANYTHING - teach?"
To which I responded: "NO "dog"! We just cancelled school until you showed up - like we always do!" :>) :>)
I spent time reading down this thread. WOW!! I MISSED GOOD STUFF!! :>) :>) Really SORRY! :>)

Not true....he called the ENTIRE GOP leadership ignorant. LOL

lololol I stand corrected. He called them all ignorant.

You are correct! Obama called the RNC and McCain's Campaign ignorant. But CNN's website is running a headline "Obama: Republicans Take Pride In Being Ignorant." Its amazing to watch the media manipulate this election. It would be funny...if this wasn't real life.

Have ya'll seen this you tube. It's pretty old (from February), but with all the handwringing over Obama of late, that I wanted to revisit it because it kinda describes the feeling some of the more nonchalant voters have about Obama's candidacy.
John McCain's mouthpiece has responded to Paris Hilton's stinging retort -- but he's not attacking Hiltie!
In the unkindest cut of all, McCain's spokesperson Tucker Bounds tells TMZ that on the subject of energy, Paris is deeper than Barack. He says, "Sounds like Paris is taking the 'All of the Above' energy approach that John McCain has advocated -- both alternatives and drilling. Perhaps the reality is that Paris has a more substantive energy plan than Barack Obama."
“Obama and his supporters got their panties all in a twist when the McCain Campaign compared Obama's celebrity to the celebrity of Britney and Paris -- but Obama made the comparison first!”

Did anyone watch Morning Joe today? In one of the segments, Barnicle, the Big Head guy, Joe and Mica were discussing the fight between Prince Fielder and one of his teammates. I found it very unsettling how Barnicle, Big Head and Joe were calling the teammate all sorts of names because he wouldn't fight Fielder, and talk about how big Fielder is. Joe also said he would've taken a baseball bat and beat Fielder with it. Maybe my dislike for those three is coming into play, but I found the whole exchange very uncomfortable.
(CNN) – Hillary Clinton will campaign for Barack Obama on two dates in August, the Obama campaign announced Tuesday.
She will hold rallies and voter registration drives in the swing states of Nevada and Florida on August 8 and 21, respectively. Obama won’t attend Friday’s event since he is taking a planned vacation with his family — and it’s not yet clear whether he’ll be at the latter date, which falls just days before the Democratic convention in Denver

Barack shares his birthday cake with reporters:
When a reporter turned down his offer of birthday cake (not this reporter), Obama joked, "No cake? Maureen Dowd will write a story about you not eating cake! Don't want to be an elitist now!"
"When George Bush took office, he had an energy policy - he turned to Dick Cheney, and he told Cheney "Go take care of this. So John McCain is taking a page out of the Bush-Cheney playbook."
"He said, I want to drill here, I want to drill now. I don't know where he was standing; I think it was in a building."
You know when John McCain's campaign goes out there and starts saying things like I'd rather lose the war to win an election or when he says that I didn't want to visit troops in Germany even though every reporter [traveling with Obama] says that's not true. Well you're not trying to solve problems; all you're trying to do is to divide people so that you can win an election. That's nothing to be proud of."

When did Pat Buchannan become the expert on race relations!!!!????? Buchannan and Eugene Robinson just went head to head on MSNBC's Hardball. Of course, Buchannan dominated the segment and relied on all of his normal talking points. I believe my head is going to explode.
I have a noticed trend these last several days with "race " being discussed on cable news programs. Basically, the program will feature two or more Blacks on opposing sides and the moderator just lets them go at each other. The moderator doesn't even bother to ask any questions. There is no need as they are doing a bang up job themselves.
There was one guy on the other night, his name escapes me, but a complete moron. Apparently, he was representing the Black conservatives. He actually had the audacity to say he being black "understood code", and what McCain's tactics do not rise to that level.
Here is the thing, race being discussed day in day out is not a good thing for Obama. When the MSM ask incredulously why are poll numbers tightening post Obama's overseas trip, they are being disingenious. That was their goal. I believe this is in some part to McCain's vile tactics, aided and abetted by the MSM.
GreenLadyHere
Honey01: Might it have been the VERY WRONG Rev. Joe Watkins - who, in recent days, has had a Thread dedicated SOLEY to his WRONGNESS's SICKNESS!?? :>) :>)
That's the tactic. That's why Bill chimed in the subject to keep the story going another week.
It's not going to work.
Something tells me that the country is at least open to hearing the discussions. If not, they turn off the TV.
The undecided voter might lean toward McCain because of it, but then he says or does something completely stupid and they go back on the fence.
kenyaw
Craig,
Damn it! I knew it!! When I got home today and saw that they were still talking about "the race card" and "bottom of the deck", I was thinking, hmm... Bill isn’t slick. That was so very deliberate yesterday. So now the topic of conversation is that Senator Obama is going around calling everybody a racist.
Timing! Billary is not going down without a serious fight. Convention here they come!
Okay, on this I'm rather slow on the uptake - how is it not good for Obama when race is being discussed by others?
As long as he stays on message - keeps framing the issues, even when attacking McCentury, he'll be fine. When the media is driving the race issue, when it is only pundits and folk like Massa Buchanan and Lipless Joe discoursing on race, I fail to see how this hurts Obama.
Honey01
@99...
I think "race" is bad thing for Obama because the way the conversation is being framed. We are not hearing a discussion on actual race relations, how to move the country beyond racism, discrimination, etc.
The MSM and the campaigns themselves only discuss race from a POV "who played the race card".
I do think it can turn some people off. The people who walk around with rose colored glasses on and perhaps do not recognize we are still a long ways from racial utopia.
Honestly, this was one of my beefs with CNN's Black in America. I dunno, maybe I am paranoid. But when CNN is airing "Black in America" fiftythousandeleven times, Obama is accused of accusing McCain of being a racist (did I get that right?), and talk of a formal apology for slavery...and on an on. Well, the atmosphere feels right to stir up whatever semblence of unity was forming.
P.S.
Lily
My take is that we are hearing about race and how it affects the white population. Like black people don't even figure into the equation.

I wish people would learn how to speak over Pat Buchanan when he starts his psychotic rants. Someone should just tell him "you're lying" when starts with the bullshyt fabrications. Why must people be polite to him?? Just because he's old as sand doesn't mean you have to be respectul to him.
Honey01
You and me both! Rachel is about the only one that can shut him down.
Sometimes, I would be at home sceaming back at the television at something said. I used to wonder why won't Eugene, Michelle, Jamal (insert Black contributor and/or surrogagte) did not just put him (or someother idiiot) in the head lock. I have come to realize that much like we all do daily, they also have to walk a tight rope. Obama walked the tight rope during the primaries against Hillary. Most of us walk that rope in our workplace, in school, hell just walking downtown today. I am guessing if they really got in his face, they could lose their gig. Rachel can get away with it.
So although they may not be able to put some of these folk in a headlock, I just wish they would be more aggressive in calling out BS.
Overall, Michelle Bernard is on point. I love the fact that she is completely even tempered even when delivering her hits.

"Jeremiah Wright in a skirt is the CEO of the DNC in Denver." My blog is getting an unusual amount of hits today, so I checked the Blog Stats section, and apparently "Puma PAC" had someone link to my Leah D. Daughtry and Black Liberation Theology post.
They do a lot of "Prowling" there, e.g. - "did my prowls" : "Got my prowls done" : "until the PROWL arrives" : "Going to prowl" : "Get ready for prowls" : "Just completed today’s prowl" : "Great prowling" : "PROWL COMPLETED" : "Prowl 1-4 done" : "back from prowl" : "4 part Prowl done", etc.
They don't miss a thing..."*Breaking* Sister Maya’s Name Uncovered on Alleged Obama Birth Certificate - Forensics specialist Techdude, who has been chipping away at the Obama Birth Certificate mystery for some time, has confirmed that the name on the original Certificate of Live Birth (COLB) which was used to forge the document presented by Barack Obama as his valid Birth Certificate IS: Maya Kassandra Soetoro." That lead to another link - "Barack was Born in 2 Hospitals, Sister Maya was Born Twice!"
Thank you Michelle Obama for bringing darker hued Black women back in style. For a moment there, I didn't think we'd ever make a comeback.
caligirl
LOL. one of my sisters--who is darker than michelle--basically said the same thing. :-)
the interesting thing is that michelle isn't really "dark", it's just that we've grown so accustomed to having the honey brown or super-light thrust upon us as the black beauty standard (outside of the white standard, of course) that anything darker than that is considered "dark skinned".

Obama Heckled Over Pledge of Allegiance From Ben Smith's Blog: The pledge in Berea
A slightly odd moment at the beginning of Barack Obama's event in Berea, OH, when a man on the press riser -- apparently a photographer -- began loudly demanding that the crowd recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
The crowd began to chant, drowning the man out, but Obama -- perhaps sensing a moment of peril -- quickly shushed them, and led the crowd in the Pledge.
"We usually do an invocation and a pledge before we start," he said. "I don’t know why we didn’t, but this young man reminded us."
A spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, said Obama was referring to invocations that take place as the events open, and before Obama arrives.
The other day after laying out my energy plan for the next 10 yrs I was asked by a voter if there was anything I can suggest for individuals to do to help improve the energy situation. So I suggested that each person can inflate their tires to the recommended levels among other things. Now the republicans are going around telling people this was the central part of my energy policy, handing out little tire gauges etc. Now two things I'd like to say about that:
They know it is NOT the central part of my energy policy. They know they are lying. They are making fun of an idea that a lot of experts have also recommended and suggested it could reduce our energy consumption by about 3%, which is more than John McCain's idea of drilling [he points to the floor, mocking McCain talking about drilling for oil] "right here and now" can ever provide.
"So I don't know how they could be making fun of something that experts agree is a good idea. I mean it's like these guys take pride in ignorance! It's like they like being ignorant."

August 5, 2008 11:48 Debate Moderators Announced Posted by Karen Tumulty
The Commission on Presidential Debates has just announced the lineup of moderators for the three presidential debates and the vice presidential one:
First presidential debate Friday, September 26 The University of Mississippi, Oxford, Miss. Jim Lehrer Executive Editor and Anchor, The NewsHour, PBS
Vice presidential debate Thursday, October 2 Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. Gwen Ifill Senior Correspondent, The NewsHour, and Moderator and Managing Editor, Washington Week, PBS
Second presidential debate (town meeting) Tuesday, October 7 Belmont University, Nashville, Tenn. Tom Brokaw Special Correspondent, NBC News
Third presidential debate Wednesday, October 15 Hofstra University, Hempstead, N.Y. Bob Schieffer CBS News Chief Washington Correspondent, and Host, Face the Nation
The Bush administration estimates that expanded offshore drilling could increase oil production by 200,000 barrels per day by 2030. We use about 20 million barrels per day, so that would meet about 1% of our demand two decades from now. Meanwhile, efficiency experts say that keeping tires inflated can improve gas mileage by 3%, and regular maintenance can add another 4%. Many drivers already follow their advice, but if everyone else did, we could reduce demand several percentage points immediately. In other words: Obama is right.
I like that a commenter immediately responded to the non-story of the post with an issue of substance.
Who let the fool into the press bleachers? In Ohio? Who didn't lead the pledge of allegiance before the event began?
Who's the director of this theater?
kenyaw
Craig,
I am not feeling all of these hecklers. GIves me the creeps. And it reminds me too much of the Malcom X movie. To much like a dress rehearsal for a bad situation where chaos is a distraction.
I think that the people in his audience need to be sensitive to what is at stake. I know he is trying to be nice, but I want to see the secret service start to tackle some fools.
soulsistah02
Clint Eastwood. He's shifted his focus from motion pictures to the theatre.
Let's not go there. :-) It's not racism. The presidential debates are reserved for major network news heads or icons. The fact the Gwen was chosen above all of ABC and Katie Couric is a big win for Gwen. Now Katie might have a legitimate case to cry sexism.

Way to go O!
Obama at a town hall in Youngstown, Ohio:
"That's his idea of a really relevant campaign," said the Illinois Democrat. "But I don't have time to deal with that mess because America is facing some serious problems, some serious challenges."
That was in the article I posted earlier where I asked if this was a strong enough response. I didn't quote this part, but I loved it all the same.
When I read that comment in my own voice, it's very colored. I'd love to have heard him utter those words.
Jay
I know I posted it before, but it might have been lost in the sea of other posts. Since Obama is in Ohio, I wonder if he speaks on it or is asked about it...
I hope he doesn't speak on it. I don't think it's appropriate for presidential candidates to get embroiled in local controversies, especially when they would have little to no effect on the outcome. It would be a minefield.
caligirl
i agree. he doesn't--nor should he be required--need to speak on everything that happens in this huge country.
The corporate media is calling Barack's willingness to compromise on off-shore drilling a shift while McCain's people are saying it's not at all.
Clearly, the McCain camp wants to own their 7-week flip flop on off-shore drilling so they don't exactly appreciate it that the corporate media is saying Barack has moved closer to McCain on this.
This could all get tricky for McCain. Ironically.
TruthSeeker
There a a lot of tantalizing headlines over at Huffington today...under the politics tab. I haven't read them all yet...and they are known to exaggerate LOL:
"I don't know if you know this. John McCain is looking for someone for vice president who has more economic expertise than he does. So congratulations to all of you, you’re on the short list."
Sepia
LOL! Kerry has been coming with some zingers throughout this process.
The son of Colorado GOP Senate candidate Bob Schaffer is causing his dad a little embarrassment on the campaign trail this week.
Nineteen-year-old Justin Schaffer publicly apologized for putting up posters on his Facebook page including one declaring "Slavery Gets Shit Done."
Also among the Facebook page additions are some that mock Barack Obama, painting him as Muslim, an elitist, a homosexual, terrorist and comparing the presumptive Democratic candidate for president to the cereal-box character "Count Chocula."
I don't play Veepstakes because it's been my experience over my decades as a political junkie that it is a futile effort, as the person usually chosen is most often off the radar of both pundits and supporters on both sides. What's more, I usually don't care who the nominee chooses as VP, although I acknowledge that the one chosen may indicate the astuteness of a candidate, if nothing else. But a lot of people enjoy Veepstakes as much as they do the lottery/gambling in Vegas, so I post the following for them. BTW, looks like The Field and I agree on Veepstakes.
[M]y gut is that all the Bayh-mania this week is a head fake or, even better, a pump fake:
A pump fake is a fundamental move in basketball, used to cause defenders to jump (known in basketball slang as "lifting" the defender), or be shifted off-balance. Its main applications are in the low post area, where a player is much more likely to have his or her shot blocked. The current best known practitioner of low post fake is Kobe Bryant. On the perimeter, it is useful in creating open lanes to the basket by "showing" the ball enough to entice a defender to attempt to block or steal it, allowing the dribbler to penetrate easily. Chauncey Billups is an excellent example of this, and often gains extra free throw attempts due to his skill in ball faking. J.J. Redick of Duke University and now the Orlando Magic was also a great pump-faker, which he used to draw fouls as well as create space between him and the flying defender for his forte, three-point shooting.
Throughout the political press corps and blogosphere last week there was rampant speculation - encouraged by the Obama campaign - over a possible Obama-Kaine ticket, and subsequent wondering aloud if it was in fact a maneuver to "lift the defender" and throw the speculators off the real choice (Sebelius, for example). This week's spin-a-thon surrounding Bayh has the same scent to it.
The truth is, I have no effing idea who Obama will tap, or when he will do it. (. . . Sean makes a strong case for doing it sooner rather than later, to use the $5 million Olympic games ad buy to introduce the new team).
And this is of course why the political press corps is partial to drama-filled campaigns like that of McCain or Senator Clinton before it, from which leaks and infighting by insiders provide the daily bread for those on deadline who like their Gerber's on a spoon.
I can see that in an ad: "The judgment to lead? A whorehouse, maybe, but not this nation. "
Miranda
Where's Rev. James Dobson to condemn this from his candidate that he didn't wanna endorse in the first place?? LOL.....oh, I wouldn't be mad at a 527 group running a nice ad in "the heartland" with nothing but footage, no words necessary.

Wonder what D , S and Karmi would say if Obama went to the players ball to give a speech and said Michelle is the finest @#$*@ in this joint.
....and allows you to sing your chorus one more time.
Meanwhile, there's bigger things that need addressing.
But, by all means, do something else besides addressing those problems. Kinda par for the dhimmicratic course of late, ya think?
TRW
D, I agree, this is not going to lower anyones gas prices. I just think people tend to zero in on this stuff because there seems to be a lot of hypocrisy going on. BHO can't stub his big toe without someone implying that he lacks character or isn't ready to lead. The people he knows, or is loosely associated with? Forget it. Apparently BHO has mind control powers to get them to say inappropriate things.
But when McCain does or says something questionable, people yawn, or shrug it off as it McCain being McCain. I just think people are fed up. But I also think there is going to be a lot of tit for tat in the next couple of months.
Maybe McCain feels that dirty old men and horny young ones are an important voting bloc for him.
Who knows?
TRW
He probably does. I personally don't care for his humor. I think I found him funny maybe once. But others might, and it may make him more relatable to some voting blocs.
McCain reportedly said that he'd fuck you if that what it took to be elected.
The man has absolutely no integrity whatsoever.
He's UNFIT to be POTUS.
Miranda
No, I think this is important. Do we really need another president that thinks its okay to give a shoulder rub to a Prime Minister simply because she's a "little lady?" Do we need another president who thinks its ok to call the Sec of State by a darn nickname when he's referring to her in the press? I don't even recall Clinton referring to Madeline Albright as Maddie or Janet Reno as Janie. If McCain thinks that little of his WIFE, he thinks even lower of all other women. Hell yes its important, it speaks to his mindset.
MsKitty

"In 2007, McCain missed all 11 energy-related Senate votes considered key by the League of Conservation Voters, including votes related to automobile fuel economy, offshore Virginia drilling, refinery construction, renewable electricity mandates, energy efficiency, liquefied coal and support for biofuels. The absences prompted the League to give McCain a "zero" rating for the year." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/05/mccain...
Obama losing support: The net result, pollster John Zogby found, is a race that's neck and neck, with McCain supported by 42 percent; Obama by 41 percent; Libertarian Bob Barr by 2 percent; and independent Ralph Nader by 2 percent. Another 13 percent supported other candidates or were undecided.
MSM has done everything possible to help Obama, and he keeps slipping. MSM once claimed (during Bush/Kerry campaign) that their support could gain a candidate something like 10pts. MSM has broken their own biased records this year with their coverage and protection of Obama, but Obama keeps slipping.
-Among voters aged 18-29, Obama lost 16 percent and McCain gained 20. Obama still leads, 49-38; -Among women, McCain gained 10 percentage points. Obama now leads 43-38; -Among independents, Obama lost an 11 point lead. They're now tied; -Among Democrats, Obama's support dropped from 83 percent to 74 percent; -Among Catholics, Obama lost the 11 point lead he had in July and now trails McCain by 15.
I say – ‘Give him that mike again!’ He has to be his own worst enemy, so keep him talking. Obama plays the ‘Race Card’ again and again and again, and MSM rushes in to put out the ‘Fire’…BUT, too late. Voters have already seen and heard for themselves. Obama’s Energy Plan is a tire gage, and MSM rushes in to put out the ‘Fire’…BUT, too late. Voters have already seen and heard for themselves. Obama snubs US wounded Troops in Germany, and again MSM rushes in to put out the ‘Fire’…BUT, too late. Voters have already seen and heard for themselves.
If the Dem’s convention has any infighting, Obama may take a plunge instead of a jump…

Any poll that has Obama slipping significantly among those under 30 and African Americans has to be questioned. Come on! Moreover, the polls that have him slipping are "likely" voters. Are they using past years' turn out models? I pointed out on this blog and to Ben Smith at the Politico, who published my amateur research, that many of these swing state polls showed Senator Obama garnering less of the African American vote than Kerry. Come on! There is no way to truly measure what the turnout this year will be, but it's a safe bet that the African American turnout will exceed even the most generous expectations. Lastly, I prefer that this be a horse race right now. Senator Obama does not play the part of the front runner well. He's at his best when he's down for the count. Just ask the folks who couldn't understand how a man 30 points behind in the polls could maintain such poise and display no sense of panic. As he told his donors before the Iowa Caucus, "if I need to come and hold your hand I will."
I'm just ask guilty as you as panicking every time it appears that his Campaign may be sliding off track, but I'll tell you what my grandmother, a very wise woman told me a few days ago, "girl it's too hot for your non-sense; he's going to be fine!"
I also thought it was funny. The poll shows that Obama has "fallen back across a broad front of the electorate", but losing a combined total of 36 points in the 18-29 demographic -- his "second-most loyal base of his energy" -- has to really hurt. The poll was of likely voters...again, not good for Obama, but good for America, and it looks like Americans are starting to wakeup and take a serious look at him.
Jay
Serious look at [Obama] him?
Are you guys investigating your own candidate? As anyone asked McCain or his camp who intends to pay for this 100 yr war?
Does he even have an economic plan? What's his plan to help / or engage AAs, Asians, Lationos or any other ethinc group? Hell what does he plan to do to help white folks?
Nobody is doing any real investigive reporting on this [McCain] fella and its really interesting that none of the Anti-Obama folks on this board provide at least one article about their candidate. Good, bad or indifferent - something!
McCain was vetted decades ago. Obama was never vetted, but he will get a serious going over in the next 3 months. BTW, I will be voting 'Against' the Democratic/Socialist/Communist/Fascist Party and not necessarily 'For' the Republicans...
Miranda: I would like to believe that "What she meant was" - "MCANCIENT" WAS A "VET" DECADES AGO!! :>) :>) Ya think??? Yes, I'm sure that was it!! :>) :>)
There's not going to be a hundred year war. Everyone-McCain, Obama, and the Iraqis-is talking conditions-based withdrawal now. That talking point is dead.
That's a lie. McCain's never advocated for permanent occupation of Iraq.
And the answer to my question is that there is no difference. If Obama is serious about denying Iraq to AQI, he would have to keep a presence there for the foreseeable future.
Another no shitter: any evidence to support your theory?

I hear the same lie that Craig does.
I believe McCain is out of his mind. I believe he is disconnected from reality...and his body. He speaks in a vague, annoyed dismissive way as if his words have not weight.
Fortunately, American will not have to find out the hard way.
Let's see it. If you prefer, email's on my profile.

Michelle is very attractive--in a non-trophy-wife sort of way.
Sinful Cindy McCain, to me, looks like a plastic surgery, daddy's little rich girl, perpetual cheerleader and all-round Stepford wife. I am sure she has good qualities--and I do respect her for stealing drugs for a while. LOL
But, Michelle, I like her very much. You can tell she's a great mom, and she has smarts and empathy for her fellow human beings--not just in the US, but around the world.
C McC acts and looks like a victim of domestic abuse. Publicly calling her a c*** and now 'joking' about her competing in a Miss Buffalo Dung/Wet Tshirt Contest shows how unrepentantly misogynistic he is, and how little he thinks of her. Given his explosive temper, it isn't inconceivable that he is physically abusive toward her.
In his . . . book, The Real McCain, Cliff Schecter, a journalist and frequent contributor at the Huffington Post related perhaps the most disturbing of McCain's tirades. During his 2000 White House bid, the Senator was joined on the campaign trail by his wife, Cindy, his aides, and three journalists who spoke to Schecter on condition of anonymity, but independently confirmed each other's accounts of the incident. Cindy McCain playfully ran her fingers through the Senator's hair and teased, "You're getting a little thin up there." McCain reddened and fired back, "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollup, you cunt." After he'd cooled down, McCain apologized, saying he'd had a long day.

I do have some compassion for Cindy. Unfortunately, I think she has thrown cheap shots at Michelle. If she was truly a great woman, she would have reached out to Michelle and been photographed with the two of them having lunch or something. She would have expressed compassion for what they are both going through. Now, wouldn't that defy conventional wisdom?!! ...instead of trying to twist the knife about the "Proud" statement.
As for stealing drugs....I wonder if someone else in the organization had been falsely accused of it, if she would have spoken up? I tend to think she would have let them take the fall.
Town
Cindy, in fact, blamed one of the workers of the organization. She tried to pin the embezzling rap on him but it came out that SHE was the one embezzling and stealing, not the innocent employee. So I'm guessing that yeah, she would have let them take the fall.

Now that you say it, I think I remember reading that somewhere. I think there was a man who knew the truth and threatened to talk, which is when she decided to come clean?.....
In any event, the point is... after her troubles, to not cut Michelle some slack.... I guess charity for her, does not begin at home. That's fine, just so long as we know the truth and are not fooled by the image...
Lily
I do repect her for stealing drugs for a while, LOL

"Now, Keith has trained his sights on Barack Obama, attacking him in language that startled even the notoriously reactionary radio jock Glenn Beck. During Keith's appearance on the July 30 broadcast of Beck's show, he remarked, "I think the black people would say he [Obama] don't talk, act or carry himself as a black person."
"What does that even mean?" the audibly shocked Beck replied.
"Well, I don't know what that means," Keith drawled, "but I think that that's what they would say. Even though the black society would pull for him I still think that they think in the back of their mind that the only reason he is in [the general election] is because he talks, acts and carries himself as a Caucasian."
Y'all should've left Toby Keith alone.....I bet no one would've ever heard this from him if the whole over-analyzation of his song hadn't taken place.
Since it did, he throws something back. There you go.
TRW
Throws what back? Ignorance? Beck asked him what he meant by the whole acting/talking White thing, and he said, "Well, I don't know what that means." If you don't know what something means, keep your mouth shut.
Town
Why did he throw it back on black people, when it was mostly white people who were overanalyzing the song in the first place? Black folks don't listen to Toby Keith.
I don't agree with the criticism of the lyrics, but as soon as the criticism became a story, I started my watch to see how long it would take before he did something in response.
I'm not surprised.
Town
So if he's attacking people based on race when they don't even know who he is and weren't discussing him in the first place, why shouldn't that be considered racist?
Where I come from, throwing mud at somebody who did nothing to you just so you can look big and bad is called bullying, and most bullies cry like teething babies when called on their shit.
It's race baiting (as Craig said above), but I don't think what he said is racist.
He's playing to the people who support him (minus the "rednecks for Obama" that someone mentioned a while back). He feels unfairly attacked, and is running to his place of shelter. Least that's how I see it.
I'm not defending him-though I love "American Soldier," for more than obvious reasons.
1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others. 2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination. 3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.
It seems no one is racist... until they are. What is racism then? What is the qualitative difference between a white man who believes his race is superior, but has no public power to express that belief......and the white man who says he doesn't believe his race is superior but has public power, and uses it to oppress blacks? Is racism "thinking", or "doing" or both?

Hi blksista! Good to see you. I finally stopped lurking every other day. :)

Blksista,
You are so right. I was raised by both parents, but bi-coastal. I spent the summers with my dad. I distinctly remember the times when my mother actually sat my dates down and gave them the third degree. My date would treat me very differently. They would be rushing back to MAKE me meet curfew.
I remember thinking that it would have been great to have my dad be there to do little things like that more regularly than the summer.
Kenya, my dad and my stepdad did the same things for me. Once, I was going out on a date and the guy honked his horn, instead of parking his car and coming to the door for me.
Instead of seeing me, he saw my stepfather standing at his car, saying in a calm voice, "Leutisha will not be joining you if you don't get your narrow ass out of the car and collect her from the house like gentlemen do."
Needless to say, I never dated the guy again, and last I heard, he just got out of da joint.
Lot to be said for fathers and good stepfathers. I was blessed; I had both.

My daddy believed all young men coming to his house needed to be wearing a tie.

Speaking at a town hall in Youngstown, Ohio, the Illinois Democrat fielded a question about the "myth" that elderly white women wouldn't support his candidacy. From there, however, Obama pivoted into the increasingly personal and negative tone to which the general election campaign has descended.
"When John McCain gets up there and says I'd rather win an election than win a war. When he says I didn't visit the troops when I was overseas, even though every media outlet says that's just not true... [It suggests] you are not trying to solve problems. All you are trying to do is divide people so you can win an election. That is nothing to be proud of. Let's have a real honest debate about policies that are going to make a difference in people's lives."
s
HUFFINGTON POST: The Molten Core of Barack: Why Obama Can't Win.
"Despite the McCain campaign's effectiveness, however, the best campaign against Barack Obama is not being run by his opponent, but by Barack Obama. . . . This is the trap Barack Obama has made for himself, the one he cannot escape, the one Hillary Clinton foresaw, the one that may doom him. The Obama campaign knows it too. In fear the dream is being lost drop-by-drop, they are going negative on John McCain."

Frank Castallono wrote that article and since he is only a hatchet man for the policies that we find ourselves in today. Well ,what he have to say dont mean squat.ReTHUGS reign is coming to a end and the icing on the cake when all of them is in jail for malfeasance.
"I think they're cynical," [Obama] said. "And I think they want to distract people from talking about the real issues."
Obama spent a second day in Florida to speak to the National Urban League, the predominantly black group McCain had addressed a day earlier. The Illinois senator offered a fiery defense of his push to bolster the nation's schools and dismissed what he called McCain's "slim record on education."
"What I'm interested in, ultimately, is going to be governing," he told reporters at a morning news conference. "What that means is we're going to have to try to get things done."
Asked about the McCain campaign's claim that Obama had "played the race card" — one McCain spokesman had suggested that McCain was being painted as a racist — Obama called the criticism an attempt to alter the campaign's focus.
He added of the Republicans' approach: "They're very good at negative campaigning. They're not so good at governing."
A McCain campaign spokesman, Tucker Bounds, contended that Obama was backing off.
"We're glad the Obama campaign retracted Barack Obama's accusation because it was absolutely false, and we're moving on," Bounds said in a statement. "The only 'cynical' candidate in this election is Barack Obama for his continued opposition to John McCain's comprehensive energy plan that includes additional oil drilling, gas tax relief and affordable nuclear energy."
Obama pointed the finger back at McCain.
"None of you thought I was making a racially incendiary remark, or playing the race card," he told reporters. "It wasn't until John McCain's team started pushing it that it ended up being on the front page of The New York Times two days in a row."
Since returning from an overseas trip, Obama has sought to refocus the campaign on bedrock economic issues . . .
"None of you thought I was making a racially incendiary remark, or playing the race card," he(Obama) told reporters.
Unfortunately, a majority of voters believe that the media are "in the tank' for Obama and will do what they can to help him win.
Obama is living in a bubble, taking the pulse of the nation from the front page of the NYT. Good grief.
TruthSeeker
A majority of voters don't think the media is in the tank. That is part of the narrative to paint O as an affirmative action candidate....as falsely propped up by the media. But a study showed that in fact, the media attention was more negative.
As we have observed throughout the last several years, the notion of fairness in journalism has been guided by a miscalculated rule that in order to report good news about a liberal or a liberal success, news reporting has to be counterbalanced either with unearned praise for conservatives or trumped up and parroted negative news about the aforementioned liberal or liberal success. Oh, and the reverse doesn't apply. That's the rule.
One more for the lying liars who take what media says about McSlime and flip the script to apply it to Obama - Andrea M. Greenspan and Mike Barnicle recently said that it is McSlime who lives in a bubble, read what Proverbs 12:19 says -
The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.

There ya go..just last night I was reading about "holographic" vision.....seeing what you believe rather than what's actually there - projecting the words rather than reading them off the screen.
The author told a story about walking along with a friend, being distracted by a street sign that he thought said "No Parking". Then his companion noticed that he was staring at the sign, and exclaimed that the sign was spelled wrong. It actually said "No Parkeng"...the author only saw the "e" after his friend mentioned it. His brain projected the correct spelling.
Later in the book he talked about Jung and synchronicity and Jung's experience with a patient and a scarab beetle.
And now you mention the same thing... So, I guess we have a holographic vision and a synchronicity all rolled into one.
I'm such a nerd. ;-)

Craig Hickman posted this in the other thread, and I'm just trying to spread the word:
Off-topic. This is from an email. Candidates' responses to CDC study reveal vastly different levels of commitment
Presidential candidates Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain both responded to this weekend's news that the U.S. AIDS epidemic is 40 percent larger than previously believed with statements vowing to take action against the epidemic. The Black AIDS Institute is heartened to know that both candidates are at least paying attention to this spiraling epidemic-a far cry from previous elections.
However, these statements again make clear that Sen. McCain has a long way to go to earn the votes of those who care about HIV/AIDS in America. While Sen. Obama repeated his pledge to draft and implement America's first national HIV/AIDS strategy, Sen. McCain again offered no specific commitments or proposals for how he will deal with the epidemic. He merely vows to "work closely" with all stakeholders.
Sadly, this seeming disinterest in the epidemic is not new for Sen. McCain. His record on AIDS vacillates between total disengagement and reactionary cant.
In fall 2007, the Black AIDS Institute joined a handful of AIDS watchdogs in reviewing all candidates' records and statements on AIDS. Sen. McCain's campaign has not to date offered a detailed AIDS platform. During his decades in the Senate, he has not meaningfully participated in AIDS policy formation other than to support poorly thought out bills that stigmatize people living with HIV.
Voters considering supporting Sen. McCain must demand that he take this epidemic more seriously and articulate meaningful proposals and specific commitments for dealing with it.
Sen. Obama, on the other hand, has vowed in his AIDS platform and in subsequent statements like yesterday's to draft a national strategy for dealing with the domestic epidemic. America wisely requires countries seeking foreign aid for their AIDS programs to first have a national plan of action, yet we have never had one of our own.
Sen. Obama's pledge is a welcome commitment. And should he become president we must all hold him accountable for following through on that commitment.
TEXT OF OBAMA AND MCCAIN STATEMENTS
Sen. Obama's statement:
"We have now learned that 56,300 new HIV infections occurred in the United States in 2006, not 40,000 that had been previously cited. These new figures should bring new focus to our efforts to address AIDS and HIV here at home.
"As president, I am committed to developing a National AIDS Strategy to decrease new HIV infections and improve health outcomes for Americans living with HIV/AIDS. Across the nation, we also need to prevent the spread of HIV and get people into treatment by expanding access to testing and comprehensive education programs. This report also demonstrates the need for more timely data about HIV transmission so that we can effectively evaluate prevention efforts.
"Combating HIV/AIDS also demands closing the gaps in opportunity that exist in our society so that we can strengthen our public health. We must also overcome the stigma that surrounds HIV/AIDS - a stigma that is too often tied to homophobia. We need to encourage folks to get tested and accelerate HIV/AIDS research toward an effective cure because we have a moral obligation to join together to meet this challenge, and to do so with the urgency this epidemic demands."
Sen. McCain's statement:
"The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) yesterday announced that in 2006 there were 56,300 new HIV infections in United States -- significantly higher than the previous estimate of 40,000 cases. More than a million Americans live with this devastating disease. As President, I will work closely with non-profit, government, and private sector stakeholders to continue the fight against HIV/AIDS. By focusing efforts on reducing drug costs through greater market competition, promoting prevention efforts, encouraging testing, targeting communities with high infection rates, strengthening research and reducing disparities through effective public outreach, we as a nation can make great progress in fighting HIV/AIDS."
The Black AIDS Institute is a 501(c)3 non- profit organization with a mission to end the AIDS pandemic in Black communities. The Institute interprets public and private sector HIV policies, conducts trainings, offers technical assistance, disseminates information and provides advocacy. In the Black community, HIV/AIDS is the third leading cause of death amongst children, women and men aged 25-35; and the leading cause of death amongst women aged 24-34. As HIV/AIDS continues to devastate Black populations across our country, Heroes in the Struggle, our portrait exhibit and annual gala, gives us the opportunity to showcase examples of heroism from within our communities.

No one doubts that proper tire inflation can help with efficiency, and no one thinks it’s silly to maintain one’s vehicle for a variety of reasons. However, Obama clearly stated that we could get just as much oil from tire inflation and tune-ups as we can get from drilling — a ludicrous statement well deserving of ridicule.
Val
actually you can. you save more money in a year by maintaining your car than you would drilling offshore in 4 years. look it up.
s
The DOE link says you can save 3.3% and U.S. consumption is 20.8M barrels a day, half of which is gasoline, so even if fully half the population is driving on very poorly inflated tires you’re talking about only about 165,000 barrels a day, a tenth or less of the millions of barrels a day we could add in production. Hell, the mean estimate for ANWR alone is 780,000 bpd.
Micheline
He was being sarcastic. Republicans don't get sarcasm.
He wasn't being sarcastic; he gave sound advice as issued by leading automotive and energy experts such as the EPA, the Dept. of Energy, NASCAR, and AAA, among others:
• Keep tires properly inflated and aligned. Periodic wheel alignments and keeping tires inflated to the maximum recommended pressure can improve your gas mileage.
• Get regular engine tuneups and car maintenance checks. Tuneups improve performance as well as gas mileage. Check your owner’s manual for recommended maintenance schedules. By following the manufacturer’s recommendations, you should avoid fuel economy problems due to worn spark plugs, dragging brakes, low transmission fluid, or the transmission not going into high gear.
We just aren't used to hearing our politicians give sage advice in an articulate manner.
GreenLadyHere
99%: Co-sign. Why does it feel as if some people have NOT heard these suggestions?? But, even if they haven't, how did it translate into a policy statement on energy??
I've stated the "RUBBERBAND MIND (BRAIN) concept B4. Some people can S-T-R-E-T-C-H their thoughts from one concept to a totally unrelated one and then confidently state:
"SEE!!! I TOLD YOU SO!! :>) :>)
Whew!! Incredulous Deep Breaths!!! :>) :>)
Micheline
co-sign. 99% I was referring to off-shore oil drilling.
s
He was not being sarcastic.
Here's the quote:
"There are things you can do individually, though, to save energy. Making sure your tires are properly inflated — simple thing. But we could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling — if everybody was just inflating their tires? And getting regular tune-ups? You’d actually save just as much!"
So yes, inflate your tires properly and get regular tune-ups. But if you think that will solve the supply crisis or make us independent of foreign oil, then you are misinformed.
There is nothing wrong with saying, "hey, Americans, go check to make sure your tires are properly inflated"; the problem is when Obama says, "we don't need offshore drilling (or any other idea) because we have this other idea."
Let's do everything we can. Keep all options on the table and eventually the most reasonable and affordable options will comprise a bigger and bigger part of the overall energy supply.
Nellcote
<the problem is when Obama says, "we don't need offshore drilling (or any other idea) because we have this other idea.">
It would be a problem IF that's what he was saying. But obviously it's NOT.
On Sunday, the exceedingly thin-skinned Graham was still shocked, saddened and outraged over Obama's throwaway line, spoken days earlier, about not looking like previous presidents. Graham said on "Fox News Sunday" that "there's no doubt in my mind that what Senator Obama is trying to suggest -- that he's a victim of something." Graham later added: "We're not going to run a campaign like he did in the primary. Every time somebody brings up a challenge to who you are and what you believe, 'You're a racist.' That's not going to happen in this campaign."
The key words are "victim" and "racist" -- which Obama did not say. Graham puts them in Obama's mouth because of their power to alienate.
With the first loaded word, Graham is trying to tie Obama to a stereotype: the Great African American Victim. He's playing to the annoyance some whites feel at being reminded of racial sins committed long before they were born or even long before their families came to this country.
As Graham well knows, Obama has taken great pains to sanitize his campaign of even the faintest whiff of victimhood. Obama understands that in order to be elected president, he has to come off as the least-aggrieved black man in America.
Of course, Graham is SOUTHERN WHITE MAN, so OF COURSE, he knows exactly what he's saying.
I always laugh when white people get offended if someone implies they are engaging in racism. I know white people who aren't racist who don't support Barack and I know of white people who are racist, and admit the are, who are going to vote for him anyway because in their deranged minds, electing a Black president will be good for the cause. It will prove once and for all how inferior we are.
People need to stop tripping.

This very phenomena is a tool of racism- its called colorblind racism. If I don't "see color," then I can't be racist.

I saw a clip of Gergen explaining that as a son of the south, he understood what "The One" meant ...it meant "uppity".
Nellcote
I was very surprised when Gergen did that. Of course, it didn't sink in with the pundits. This morning Ed Henry is saying that Gergen meant that McCain is calling Obama "out of the mainstream" by calling it dogwhistle. I don't know if he's really that dumb or just covering his ass.
TruthSeeker
What Gergen said was not open to interpretation....he was very clear about what he meant. Why would Ed try to parse it other than to blur the truth.
In J. Edgar Hoover-parlance--without the cocktail dress and the five o'clock shadow--The One means the black messiah...he who must be destroyed by any means possible and at all costs.
J. Edgar never stopped tripping--about his closet homosexuality and his own part-blackness--until the day he died.
Hoover - now that is one man who makes Rove look like a school kid.
TruthSeeker
Perhaps. Someone else pointed out on HuffPo that in the ad, the focus was on blacks in the audience. The whites who were just as excited, were put in shadow.
Perhaps they are trying to paint O as a "black messiah".
kenyaw
Truth, "Perhaps they are trying to paint O as a "black messiah"."
Well that would not be a good look...we all know what happened to the first Black Messiah.
But the sad thing is that when the one does come back, he will get the exact same treatment.
TruthSeeker
Maybe "messiahs" are not what we think...as in related to religious belief. Maybe they are figures that inspire massive shifts in consciousness. Maybe they represent concepts and ideas. Somehow these people help push us to the next level....and we call them forth when we're ready.
If you distill Jesus to a concept "Christ Consciousness" ....then Barack could be said to embody it. He is certainly challenging the "money-lenders"(lobbyists)......and the "Pharisees"(old style Washington).
I know those ideas are blasphemous to Christians because they believe there can only be one, and any reference to another is the "Anti-Christ"...but, I think the truth is less sensational. And I believe Jesus - if he was a historical figure rather than a concept - was just a man...albeit an extraordinary man who challenged beliefs and inspired change.
A funny bit of trivia: There are a series of books written by a woman called Jane Roberts. Jane is dead now, but in the 60's she channeled an entity called "Seth". These books are referred to as the Seth books because they're supposedly written by this entity. In one of the books, a student inquired about Jesus....Seth said that the consciousness that we think of as Jesus would return, as a spiritual leader, a black man - born in Africa, but would do his main work in Indonesia.

I read those books years ago. I understand exactly what you are saying. I don't have traditional beliefs either.

In many discussions I have had with friends and family since the onset of this election, the single biggest 'fear' was the fear of being labeled 'racist' if you did not support Obama.
Most people I know, were more troubled by his policies and resume than by his name, his race, his weight or his ears.
Having been raised with Dr. King's words, "...be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character," burned into our consciences, we were hopeful that we could be free to disagree with and challenge Obama's resume and policies on their merit.
As I have said before, I came to JJP, seriously looking to see if and where I could find common ground with Obama and his supporters. He is not the candidate for me, but the reasons I do not support him have nothing to do with race or white entitlement and I speak for a great many of my friends and collegues when I say this.
White voters, fearful of being labeled as racist if they criticize or oppose Obama, have just seen that fear legitimized by Obama and his supporters.
I assert that Obama's drop in the polls is with independent white voters who were comfortable with Obama when he appeared to be post-racial. Now that Obama has on many occasions patently used his race to his advantage, or to attack his critics, the 'post-racial' label no longer fits as comfortably as it once did.
Lily
Really the biggest white fear is being labeled racist? I find that laugh out loud funny.
kenyaw
S,
Don’t you all have some white folks that you all can quote??
1. Senator Barack Obama NEVER said that he was post racial. Those words never came out of his mouth. The media said that silly line.
2. There is no such thing as post racial. So let that go!
3. It makes a person seem simple if they think, the "I have a dream" speech represents all of what Dr. King said and stood for; the Rev. Dr. Marting Luther King, was tired of the simple minded people that felt that they needed to murder, oppress and control blacks and he was pleading to THEIR better selves. Dr. King's "I have a dream" speech set the oppressor free from the bondage of hate. A quote from former Sec of State Colin Powell, when he was on the view January 2008. Don’t try to flip the script. That famous line was for the people that felt that they had to dominate, HATE and oppress black people and other minorities.
4. If a person has to be post racial for your friends to respect them, meaning they cannot be proud of their heritage and talk about it openly, then you and your friends are confused and you don't even know it
Would a Mexican, Jewish, Chinese, Japanese, Italian person have to be post-racial or post-ethnic for you to appreciate all of who they are? Of course not! You would eat their foods and smile, go to there Quinceañera or bar mitzvah and celebrate their different and wonderful cultures. Watch Schindler List, read Anne Frank and feel their pain.
But some folks expect black people to want to assimilate so badly that we don’t feel kinship towards each other and don't acknowledge our shared experiences and history. That is twisted.
How can you accuse a candidate of "patently used his race to his advantage," if that same candidate has requested that his volunteers and staffers never discuss the verbal abuse and bigoted harassment that they receive out in the field. This same candidate won't allow that bigoted behavior to make his campaign about being a victim of prejudice. He presses on so his staffers and volunteers press on.
evita
I understand the fear of being called a racist because if implies a lack of morality in this post civil rights era. However, racism is complex, layered, and historically woven into our society.
So when someone says I don't like I Obama because he is Black- yep that's racism. And when someone says I don't like Obama because he is uppity or the way he talks seems contived, then that's racism too.
Too many white people believe they know what it means to be Black in the United States which is yet another manifestation of racism- the implication that white's know all, and everyone else is just whining. So when whites use the word race or racism they are almost always misinformed and ignorant to the reality experienced by people of color. I know many of you have people of color as friends- so read: reality as systemic experiences well documented and available to all of us.
kenyaw
Evita,
I feel where you are coming from but everyone needs to get a better educated on what racism is and what it is not. Also, we all need to re-evaluate how we think of racism. Black, white and everyone else involved.
The first example is of prejudice. If a person says that they will not vote for a Mexican or Black candidate, then that is racism.
Second example is of prejudice not racism.
Third and most important point, black folks do not have a monopoly on racism and the discussions surrounding it. If we are ever going to move the conversation forward and continue to build relationships, we cannot be the only ones doing all of the lecturing.

Town
People who aren't racist don't fear being called racists.
glory
What a generalization. I don't agree with this statement. It may be true in certain circumstances but there are people who fear being called something they're not.
Town
Not a "generalization" if it's true. Racists who own their racism do not fear being called racist and people who are not racist do not fear being called racist. It's only people who are racist but don't want to be thought of as one who are scared somebody's going to call them a racist for, in most case, doing something racist.
If you're not a racist and somebody says "You're not voting for Obama because you're racist," you're like, Ok, whatev and you keep on moving.
glory
By even saying your statement was a generalization, I run the risk of being called a racist sympathizer or apologist, but that doesn't mean I am one. For the record, I'm not, I'm just calling a blanket statement when I see one. I understand your logic, I just know better than to universally apply it to all people who are being accused of being racist. Not all people who are being accused of being racist are actually racists, but they could reasonably fear being branded with that label by someone who likes throwing the label around without reason. It's part of the reason why people get all tongue-tied when talking about race relations now, and it's part of the reason why progressive dialogue on race relations is scarce, though truly needed.
If someone isn't a racist, they could genuinely expect to get called a racist for not voting for Obama and dread having to deal with the consequences of being unfairly branded a racist. Black people who don't support Obama have been dealing with that for at least a year now, just with different labels like Tom or Oreo or Sellout. It all falls back on faulty reasoning. Just because someone doesn't want to vote for Obama doesn't mean they're a sellout or a racist, but these folks aren't unreasonable in being afraid that that's exactly what they'll be called.
TruthSeeker
Well, that's the ugly legacy of racism...things are just not fair.
That's probably true. And if those who aren't racist are directly called racist, they'd probably just dismiss it as absurd and not make much of a stink about it.
Town
And those who own their racism don't fear being called racist, either. Do you really think Pat Buchanan quakes in his boots at being called a racist?
s
What are you implying with your statement? It is not a fact. It is a blanket assumption that places the onus on me to now prove to you that I am not racist. That is what I am talking about.
A white person, raised under the specter of PC, is always suspect. Most people are not educated in the ubiquitous lexicon of racially coded phrases and it takes just one innocent slip of the tongue to instill this fear.
It is not out of the realm of possibility that my six year old could be suspended from school by stating the Obama has big ears.
Isn't it more honest to admit that the risk is there and the fear is not completely unwarrented?
kenyaw
S,
Welcome to the real world. In the real world, we all have to be conscious of stereotypes and certain habits we have of prejudging.
And another kid could be kicked out of school for saying that white people smell like puppies. Your life is no more f'ed up because black people have to be respected as equals.
You have to learn some new words that might be considered offensive, so do we all
Town
There is no "implication" to my statement. People who are not racists don't fear being called racists. It is only those people who are in fact racist, perform racist acts and think racist thought BUT WHO DON'T WANT TO BE THOUGHT OF AS RACIST who fear being called racist.
"It is a blanket assumption that places the onus on me to now prove to you that I am not racist."
The onus is on YOU to prove to YOURSELF that you're not a racist. Has nothing to do with me.
"Most people are not educated in the ubiquitous lexicon of racially coded phrases and it takes just one innocent slip of the tongue to instill this fear."
Stop saying stupid stuff and you won't have to worry about "slips of the tongue." If it's not a conversation or topic that you would bring up around or about white people, it's probably a good idea not to bring it up or about non-white people as well. If you're not going to wonder if John McCain is too short to be President then don't speculate if Barack Obama is too skinny to be President. That's the kind of stuff that invites charges of racism.
"It is not out of the realm of possibility that my six year old could be suspended from school by stating the Obama has big ears."
Black people aren't in control of the school system, so you'd have to take that up with the white people who are.
"Isn't it more honest to admit that the risk is there and the fear is not completely unwarrented?"
There's a lot of buzz about Bayh getting the VP slot. Interesting? Sure. Exciting? Not really. Feels plain, I prefer Kaine--but Bayh would probably be the "safer" choice...
I actually wouldn't mind Wesley Clark (after he asked the key question: "How does getting shot down over Vietnam make you presidential?")
That's all we need: another Clintonista and a DLC'er. This scene as we know it is bankrupt.
At this rate, we probably need someone like Biden or Hegel (spitting and doing the sign of the cross) who knows how respond big when the GOP is doing their attack ads. With Biden, you've got to keep on en pointe, but he can be effective.
And I was going to make my peace with his selection.
APeach
Yeah. And his daddy is Birch Bayh, which is the main thing he's got going for him. He was a presidential contender, too--only he had a more progressive record than Evan.
The beltway types have been trying (and no doubt encouraged by those aligned to Bayh) to hype him as a "serious" presidential/veep contender for years.
We had Tim Kaine's trial balloon; now it's Evan's turn.
Just think about the dog on the roof of the station wagon...

I think it's Pawlenty because of Romney's Mormonism. Their 5 alarm wingnuts don't believe he's truly Christian. And maybe McLame thinks he can make a play for MN. Kerry won, but it was 51-48.
According to a front page diary by Markos Moulitsas, Romney's lack of knowledge about his candidate's accomplishments may be a VP dealbreaker.
WOLF BLITZER: Can you cite one legislative accomplishment that Senator McCain produced during those 26 years in Washington in order to achieve energy independence?
GOVERNOR ROMNEY: Well, I'm not a historian that goes through all of the pieces of legislation John McCain has worked on.
MARKOS: No one asked Romney to take a look at McCain's late-18th century accomplishments. Those are legitimately a historical question. It was his more recent actions that were the subject of Blitzer's query. But in any case, Romney's response, translated into English, was essentially "I didn't get that talking point today."
Almost missed your question for all the foolishness posted in response to the post.
English is spoken by about 82% of the country's population (that's from the 2000 Census). I would actually like to see it named as the official language of the US.

I believe that we must use every tool in our arsenal to keep our country’s enemies from our shores. I support electronic screening of calls and other forms of communication that originate/terminate in this country, so long as that tool is not used illegally on our own citizens. ......................................................................................................................................................But it has been use illegally against us.Thats why the telecoms want immunity.
To quote a good friend, “I believe that no one owes me anything just because I live and breathe.”. I don’t support any system, program, or entitlement that gives preference to one over another. Great points DJ.
Indeed, the right wing doesn't believe in survival of the fittest with regard to corporations. If they are mismanaged, they should be allowed to die like the dinosaurs, right? No, Repubs argue that they should be propped up by all, for the benefit of all. They believe in welfare, just not for the poor.
Those ideas above are irrational because they've not been subjected to rigorous logical testing and inquiry. They are deeply ideological, in that they are strong beliefs simply because D believes them. On the most casual observation, you could detect flaws in logic.
Some of those beliefs are the result of individual programming by misguided parents, better worked out be a good psychiatrist rather than unleashing it on the world at large. Some of those beliefs make life unbearable for the person who holds them.....why do they want to share with the rest of us? And, we should be stupid enough to adopt their pathology?!
Should the whole be subjected to the ideological., irrational beliefs of a few? Humanity doesn't need to reinvent the wheel here. We are not newborns in the sense that we didn't just arrive at this point in time.
We have come from the past and learned lessons from the dark ages. We know what it was like when only the wealthy had power and were propped up by the poor. We know why workers fought to organize. We know what it was like during Jim Crow... Why would we support an ideology that would revert society to that experience?
s
Swimming in the ideological soup of postmoderism you claim that you wish to liberate society, but you really just want to impose new meanings and rigid categories in the 'progressive' mold.
You ask, "Should the whole be subjected to the ideological., irrational beliefs of a few?"
You simply seek to tear down everything that in your view "privileges" the powerful over the powerless and to replace it with new truths more to your liking.
Let d have his beliefs and opinions. Feel free to disagree, but to attack those beliefs as 'irrational' and pathological merely proves my point.
If my agenda had been completely progressive, Truth still would've found something wrong with it.
Some people are who they are.
Personally, I'd be interested to see if she actually read what I wrote, or just based her opinion on djchefron's somewhat limited synopsis.
TruthSeeker
Society knows how to liberate itself, and is trying to do so with structures that balance the needs of the whole and the individual. Right wing ideology wishes to dismantle the structure that benefits the whole, believing that the individual can survive without it.
You're responding emotionally to the terms "irrational" and "pathological" .....all they mean is that when those beliefs are subjected to logical inquiry, they don't hold up; therefore they are irrational. And, they are pathological because they are personally unbearable. To disseminate personally unbearable ideas is to spread ideas that don't support life.
What you may see as 'beneficial' I may see as 'oppressive.' And vice versa.
You voice an opinion, not a universal truth, and you do so with conviction. Fine. However, I submit that you apply the same logical inquiry to your own beliefs as well and they will not hold up quite as well as you think they do.
TruthSeeker
I know you could argue that we simply have a difference of opinion as the "Liberal" and "Conservative" sides. But sometimes there's a side that's "right"...based on what is supportive of life, and benefits the greatest number of people.
I determine what's "right" by looking to see how punitive the ideas are. If an idea says that you've made a mistake and it's your own fault and you must be punished and it doesn't have anything to do with the rest of us...I tend to think that it is not "right". In fact, I sometimes think that these punitive political ideologies are working out parental judgment on a grand scale. I think that an easier, softer more liberal approach of saying you've made a mistake, but it doesn't benefit us all to punish you forever seems like a more holistic, beneficial approach and is more "right". Therefore, it is more "true" than the punitive approach. Is it absolute?...no. But it is the closest we can come in this relative world that we live in.
Your punitive ideas while within the confines of your own life, relationships, home...are harmful to only those who reside there. But, when they are turned into public policy, they harm a great many people....and there is no escape.....and we are all weaker for it.
Personal pathology, does not good public policy make...
Personal pathology turned public policy, impinges on the rights of the many.
So you see, I have thought carefully about it.
s
"But sometimes there's a side that's "right"...based on what is supportive of life, and benefits the greatest number of people."
Let's apply this to the energy debate.
The 'personal pathology' of environmental activists and the Democratic party regarding our domestic energy supply has led to very punitive policy proposals.
For example:
Nuclear energy is the only large-scale, cost-effective energy source that can reduce carbon emissions while continuing to satisfy a growing demand for power. And these days it can do so safely.
But to environmental activists and the Democrat party, nuclear energy is synonymous with nuclear holocaust and it has been opposed since the 1970s.
Just today, Barack Obama repeated his call for a 15% reduction in electrical demand in Youngstown, Ohio, and held California up as a model for the rest of the nation to follow.
The aging infrastructure, price mandates, and botched privatization led the state into years of rolling blackouts, where utilities simply cut off supply in order to compensate for an inability to meet demand. Governor Gray Davis got recalled from office over the issue, but the blackouts continued for years afterward. California never did reduce demand, not even by 5%, let alone 15%. A highly punitive and ineffective policy.
There are many measures we can take to conserve energy, but conservation alone will not meet our current demand, let alone our future needs if we transition to electric hybrid cars.
Development of nuclear power plants and domestic drilling are both ways to increase supply as we transition to alternative sources . These proposals make sense, and can be combined with conservation measures, such as tire inflation.
It is unfortunate that Dems continue to demonize the oil companies, obstruct drilling, subsidize corn ethanol, promote cap-and-trade schemes to 'save the planet' all of which will actually raise food and energy prices and do little address our domestic energy supply.
One really wonders about non-government organizations, politicians and others who profess concern over the plight of the American people while at the same time accepting or promoting policies that actually do more harm than good to the economic well being of us all.
TruthSeeker

I'm no energy expert. However, I think there are more considerations here than cost-effectiveness. I guess it depends on how much risk you want to take....and if you lose the bet, what the consequences are. Nuclear meltdown is not something that can be cleaned up. There are profound consequences to life for decades to come if an accident occurs. Add in the potential for mischief(terrorist attack) - then, nuclear might be a greater liability than it's worth. Therefore, I don't think it unreasonable for opponents to be "rabid" about this. Add that in with corporation's notoriety for "fucking up". If you weigh those valid concerns with whether nuclear is indeed THE MOST cost-effective energy source, I can understand the position of the detractors. They're saying, lets look for other ways first so that if people screw up - as they invariably do - then the consequences won't be dire.

Indeed.
Hitler is an extreme example of a personal pathology run amok. If he had worked out his sickness in his own sphere, torturing small animals and terrorizing his own family.....then he would not have unleashed his horror on the world. The problem was, he tried to turn his punitive ideas into public policy.

Great response. When D and S get hoisted on their right wing talking points(when their health insurance wont cover their child because its not profitable for them, when their jobs get shipped out for cheaper labor and they cant get food stamps to support their families, when their pensions get suck dry because it went to pay the privileged their outrageous saleries) then they will be singing a different tune.
1. You can't prove that. Even if you could, it wouldn't change my statement.
2. If that's what the Republican Party supports, so be it. This is what I believe, and I don't recall mentioning anything about tax breaks and bailouts anywhere.
3. I think what I said is what I believe. I appreciate your spin, though. Thanks for playing.
Here in Madison, there is no McCain ground game. I mean, really. Ads a plenty on TV, but no McCain game at all. They're too quiet or simply nonexistent.
Anyone who has seen me would cosign with your comment, Square Peg. When I was at Netroots Nation, I was in a suit and pearls...just like Michelle. Most professional sistas, even sporting ethnic hairstyles, know that we rock the uniform; basic suit, heels and pearls or scarf. It's the UNIFORM for sistas.
I like this sista and I love the idea of her being First Lady - she would bring a class element to the White House that hasn't been seen since Jackie Kennedy, even though Nancy Reagan really tried. LOL

When folks say ' Two for the Price of One', we're not believing that Michelle's gonna try and do the 'Policy' thing. We just want HER as First Lady, and the only way to do that is by electing HIM....LOL

I'm not sure how I feel about it but the Sept. Harper's Bazaar has Tyra on the cover imitating Michelle.
I must admit that at first I did not care very much for Michelle Obama, but I am proud to say that she would make an excellent First Lady. She is smart, educated, professional and a go-getter, which I can't say the current First Lady has all those attributes. I am proud to say that a dark-skinned sister is on the cusp of making history.
