The Comedy Heavens Receive a New Member

CHICAGO – Bernie Mac, the Emmy and Golden Globe nominated actor and comedian who worked his way to Hollywood success from an impoverished upbringing on Chicago’s South Side, died Saturday at age 50.
“Actor/comedian Bernie Mac passed away this morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago area hospital,” his publicist, Danica Smith, said in a statement from Los Angeles.
She said no other details were available and asked that his family’s privacy be respected.

I'm almost in tears as I type this. Bernie Mac was family. He was a local guy who went big, but never forgot his hometown. He never moved away from Chicago. I admit it – what I loved most about Bernie is that he married his high school sweetheart, and when he got big, he stayed with her. He was a Black man who took care of his family, and secondarily made us laugh.
Damn, he was too young. Too young.
Best Mac routine in Kings of Comedy for me (shaking my head all the way going, ' you.so.wrong.Bernie'): How ' mutherfucker' could be used as a Noun, Verb and Adjective.

On the show- the funniest episode for me was when the little boy joined the gymnastics team, and he became “king of the ribbons!”
He led a good life, affected a lot of people- though not always perfect. He exists in perfection now.

I was in tears this morning when I heard the news. As a fellow Chicagoan, he will be missed. I just saw him about a month ago outside of Macys' and we spoke..
My husband works part time for the White Sox where he he has season tickets. My husband always says how down to earth he is and just plain nice (and a good tipper).

I was really sad to wake up and hear about Bernie Mac this morning. I thought he was going to pull through!
I have never heard of sarcodoidosis before Bernie, but apparently Black people are more prone to get it than whites and Black women are twice as likely to get it than Black men. How many people have heard of sarcoidosis before? From the Chicago Tribune:

I was watching clips from “The Kings of Comedy” while I was in Britain, and I remember the bit about using the word “M—-F—-” as an adjective, a noun and a verb. That's pure genius, and he stayed real and true to the game.
The others begin as geniuses…and then SELL OUT. That's why Eddie Murphy and his ilk are still around.

I am just in shock over this. I wonder whether he was sick when Obama told him his jokes were off-center…

Fifty is too young. He had so many more years to live well and happily.
I will say this, brother was a hustler. He was getting gigs all over the place. Perhaps that was what wore him down and made him susceptible to sarcoidosis.
This makes me think about Robin Harris' shockingly early death, too.

My sister has sarcoids – but when it gets bad they treat with steroids. Otherwise, she's okay. There isn't a cure. And yeah, stress doesn't help.

Bernie was a hero to all of us. He remained true to where he came from and true to all of us. He made us think and was funny in a side-splitting way. He was able to maintain his dignity–always, and his sense of personal style was always impeccable. He will be greatly missed. My prayers are with his friends and family.

I was hooked the minute I saw him on Def Comedy Jam with that crazy a$% shirt and the jeans with his face painted on 'em. And stayed hooked after I understood that the joke of 'adopting' his sister's children was really his true life story

I went to Wiki. Unfortunately, this disorder has no known causative organism, which makes it more difficult to diagnose, although treatment is available. The term SARCO = flesh is a reference to the fleshy nodules which develop. The article mentioned, as was previously posted, the devastating effect of fatigue and sleeplessness on the condition.

Just as with hip hop artists, the talent, edge, and creativity exist with comedians, but because they don't fulfill an existing stereotype or travel a well-worn path, they get no play. They aren't “marketable,” though no one has even tried to market them yet.
Bernie Mac will truly be missed. I consider him to be the best, most original, creative, and funniest of the Kings of Comedy. He made me cringe with his dirtiness and political-incorrectness, but most importantly, he made me laugh.
RIP, Bernie.

Robin Harris. Another great gone too young.
I was recently recounting one of my favorite jokes from a comedy special he hosted on the early days of BET. He and Myra Jay were trading insults, and when she got her turn on stage, she said of Robin, “You know how people have 'Welcome' mats in front of their houses? Robin house so small, his mat just say, “Well, . . . .”
Doesn't translate so well typed out, but believe me, it was funny as hell.

I was living in DC when The Original Kings of Comedy came out. I headed out to the cinema hall at Union Station. Most of the audience was having a good time, but nothing too crazy – a lot of the jokes were kinda the same. But when Mac came on, the audience was in hysterics. At the time, Mac probably was the least well known of the 4 comics in that line-up. I know I didn't know him.
Then his career took off, and when he did get his own show, he and Larry Wilmore (a producer and writer) decided to put together an original show. They did not shy away from the tragedy that often is in some families, such as his sister's drug use. Or the paranoid feelings that kick in when teenagers start dating, or what to do when your kid is a bit of a geek. He dropped the “Dumb Dad” routine that is so common in sitcoms, and became a Father Knows Best with attitude in an easy chair.
Although George Carlin was a very different type of stand-up, both he and Mac were originals. Both are gonna be missed. Thankfully, we have YouTube.
