You know what I found interesting during the 60 minutes Obama/Biden segment? Neither of them ever mentioned McCaint's running mate's name. They referred to her as "she" "her" "a mother" blah blah blah, but her name was never mentioned by either Obama or Biden.
Biden said, "I think they're looking for more than whetther Joe Biden is from Scranton and she hunts."
Obama said, "Obviously she's a fine mother and an up and coming public servant. My sense is that she subscribes to John McCain's agenda." Yet they never once said her name, not even the interviewer, Steve Kroft.
Val
This is HYSTERICAL - comedians are already having a field day with McCain's pick for vp and how the repubs are spinning it. LOL
Barack went to pay his respects to a fallen woman. I'm not suggesting he be able to do that in privacy, given his stature. But how loud his applause was compared to other government officials is just not something that deserves coverage.
parker404
I understand your point, Craig, but I watched the funeral on C-Span, and it was very touching to see the community's reaction to Obama. Since he's not able to run as the First Black President, it was great to see how proud our people are of him. Former Congressman Louis Stokes, before making his remarks about Tubbs Jones, made a very touching comment to Obama about being 83 years old and never thinking he'd live to see the day...
It's just nice to be reminded that WE can and should be proud of Obama.
Butting Heads Palin on Obama by Philip Gourevitch September 8, 2008 Text Size: Small Text Medium Text Large Text Print E-Mail Feeds Keywords Palin, Sarah (Gov.); McCain, John (Sen.); 2008 Election; Vice-Presidents; Alaska; Politics; Republicans, Republican Party Before she was running against him, Sarah Palin—the governor of Alaska and now the Republican candidate for Vice-President of the United States—thought it was pretty neat that Barack Obama was edging ahead of John McCain in her usually solidly red state. After all, she said, Obama’s campaign was using the same sort of language that she had in her gubernatorial race. “The theme of our campaign was ‘new energy,’ ” she said recently. “It was no more status quo, no more politics as usual, it was all about change. So then to see that Obama—literally, part of his campaign uses those themes, even, new energy, change, all that, I think, O.K., well, we were a little bit ahead on that.” She also noted, “Something’s kind of changing here in Alaska, too, for being such a red state on the Presidential level. Obama’s doing just fine in polls up here, which is kind of wigging people out, because they’re saying, ‘This hasn’t happened for decades that in polls the D’ ”—the Democratic candidate—“ ‘is doing just fine.’ To me, that’s indicative, too. It’s the no-more-status-quo, it’s change.”
This was two weeks ago, at the statehouse in Juneau. After persistent reports, in July, that Palin was on McCain’s short list of potential running mates, her name had faded back into obscurity. Nobody in Alaska seemed to take her seriously as a national prospect, and she had shrugged the whole thing off on television, telling CNBC’s Larry Kudlow that, before considering the job, she would want to know “what is it, exactly, that the V.P. does every day.” Now, at the statehouse, she sat, unattended by aides, curled up in a cardigan, and explained that what she had done every day since becoming governor was to stick her thumb in the eye of Alaska’s Republican Party establishment. “The G.O.P. leader of the state—we haven’t spoken since I got elected,” she said.
She went on, “I guess if you take the individual issues, two that I believe would be benchmarks showing whether you’re a hard-core Republican conservative or not, would be: I’m a lifetime member of the N.R.A.—but this is Alaska, who isn’t?—and I am pro-life, absolutely.” She continued, “I guess that puts me in a box of being hard-core Republican.” But she said she recognized that “the Democrats also preach individual freedoms and individual rights, capitalism, free market, let-it-do-its-thing-best, let people keep as much of their money that they earn as possible. And when it comes to, like, the Party machine, no one will accuse me of being partisan.”
So the possibility that Obama might win Alaska did not worry Palin: “Turning maybe purple in the state means, to me, it’s more independent, it’s not the obsessive partisanship that gets in the way of doing what’s right for this state, and I think on a national level that’s what we’re gonna see.” And she added, “That’s why McCain is the candidate for the G.O.P.—because he’s been known as the maverick, as the conduit for some change.” In the state’s Republican caucus, McCain came in fourth, trailing Ron Paul. “I always looked at Senator McCain just as a Joe Blow public member, looking from the outside in,” she said. “He’s been buttin’ heads with Republicans for years, and that’s a healthy place to be.” Then again, on McCain’s signature issue—the prosecution of the war in Iraq—she did not sound so gung-ho. Her son is a soldier, and she said, “I’m a mom, and my son is going to get deployed in September, and we better have a real clear plan for this war. And it better not have to do with oil and dependence on foreign energy.” ♦

Lawyers for Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick have proposed a deal in which he would plead guilty to two felonies, make restitution and serve five years' probation in exchange for avoiding jail time, a newspaper reported Sunday.
The Detroit Free Press quoted "a source familiar with all aspects of the negotiations" as saying Kilpatrick's legal team also said he would give up his law license, not run for office for two years and do 300 hours of community service.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy hadn't yet accepted the offer, the newspaper said.

I spoke to my church sister who's parents LIVE in Alaska!! And have so for at least 20 years..
They said: Gov. Palin?? WHAT!!???? They are too old for WTF! " :>) :>) :>)
She visits often and said that there are quite a number of restrictions on land use and on animal killing. Hence, OIL DRILLING is NOT encouraged - "McAncient"!!!
She said, in terms of the quality of life, alcoholism is rampant!! People collect money for just living there[and for incentives???], even though they pay no taxes!!
They describe the government as UTTERLY CORRUPT!!! Bribes and GRAFT[back-scratching & palm greasing] are the order of the daily!!!
And they didn't think SQUAT about Gov. Palin!!
Other that that - life is good in "CAMELOT"!!!! :>) :>) :>)

I just dont understand the mindset of those who cant see the clear differences in just sheer morality, just goodness of heart, in Obama vs. McCain
The more I hear Jindal during the Gustav coverage the more I like him and think McCain made a mistake passing him over.
The more I think about it the more obvious it gets. He's a Gov, if they are really looking for "executive experience", he's young, he's brown for "diversity" and after Gustav plays out he is going to be a hero for overseeing the massive evacuation, relocation for people and their pets and remaining calm under pressure.
He could have brought McCain's numbers up.
rikyrah
I would have said 'too young', but........if Jindal can make it through this term without coming under indictment, then it's time to get him to the Senate. Nobody who stays in LA politics can avoid indictment or investigation...so, best his time in LA be short.
parker404
I think he's too brown for them.

i think he probably declined the offer.

Not only do they cancel, but they pimp a hurricane. I guess they don't want any more photos of them eating cake while dead bodies are floating down the streets of NOLA.
Now I'm kinda wanting us to pimp the hurricane too. Insane & Palin are going to Miss. to look at a refugee/evacuee center. They are trying to portray him as doing things presidential. They still suck. We need someone in our campaign can arrange some poractive presidential stuff for O.

Teacher,
As I said below, the Obama campaign are planning to utilize their entire email list to raise money and to ask for volunteers to join in an effort to help. Trying to get a photo op out of this would be the wrong thing for to try to do. The ground resources need to be focused on relief effort (police, fire department etc.)
malletgirl02
Good point, while Mccain/Palin are trying to get a photo op, Obama/Biden are actually trying to do something that will actually help people .
msmartin
Excellent point.
Teacher
(Big sigh) OK. You're right. We shouldn't try to pimp the hurricane. O will win because he is righteous instead of opportunistic.
I hope to fly back to Houston in the early a.m. You all please pray that I'm not stranded in the airport indefinitely. If you can't pray, send good vibes.

Teacher,
My family is in Houston. So, I will include you in my prayers as well. Be safe.

Obama's campaign is already organizing. They are gathering supporters and supplies thru the huge array of people in his donor database - something the McCain campaign, nor frankly any other organization, could possibly do.
I heard that McCain plans to give his acceptance speech from a disaster area.
If that is true, let's contrast that image against the image of him with Bush and the birthday cake.
Also, check this out --
Erin Kotecki Vest (http://queenofspainblog.com/all-about-the-queen/), a journalist and Political Director and Election 08’ Producer for BlogHer linked a great piece from Mother Jones on her own site "Queen of Spain".
Here is the crucial passage on McCain and Katrina from the Mother Jones article:
But McCain’s record on Hurricane Katrina suggests that he was part of the problem, not the solution. McCain was on Face the Nation on August 28, 2005, as Katrina gathered in the Gulf Coast. He said nothing about it. One day later, when Katrina made landfall in Louisiana, McCain was on a tarmac at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona, greeting President Bush with a cake in celebration of McCain’s 69th birthday. Three days later, with the levees already breached and New Orleans filling with water, McCain’s office released a three-sentence statement urging Americans to support the victims of the hurricane.
Though McCain issued a statement the next week calling on Congress to make sacrifices in order to fund recovery efforts, he was quoted in The New Leader on September 1 cautioning against over-spending in support of Katrina’s victims. “We also have to be concerned about future generations of Americans,” he said. “We’re going to end up with the highest deficit, probably, in the history of this country.”
That attitude was borne out in McCain’s actions and votes. Forty Senators and 100 members of Congress visited New Orleans before he did; he finally got there in March 2006. He voted against establishing a Congressional commission to examine the Federal, State, and local responses to Katrina in med-September 2005. He repeated that vote in 2006. He voted against allowing up to 52 weeks of unemployment benefits to people affected by the hurricane, and in 2006 voted against appropriating $109 billion in supplemental emergency funding, including $28 billion for hurricane relief.
Here's a blog that you all really need to check out. The blogger is from Alaska and has plenty to say about his governor. This blog has been getting a ton of traffic since it was featured in Wordpress.
I do not consider myself a feminister per se. Do you agree with the writer?
Teacher
Ruthdfw, I generally agree with the writer. I agree with the overall sentiment. I think it's always easier for one to see sexism, racism or any other kind of ism in others than in oneself. The writer said some things &/or made some comparisons that I thought were sexist....I agree with her that we need to redifine sexism in general, and redefine it in the Black community in particular. It does not mean to us what it means to them. We also have different concerns and needs. They (white females) are more concerned with having the same amount of power as the white man, and I think we are more concerned with having intact families and communities. I'd be interested in hearing other's opinions about this as well. I think racism is worse than sexism, if I had to choose. There is no Black equivalent to Ellen Dgeneris or Rachel Maddow (Keith Boykin doesn't have his own show). The media showed us that they think Obama is barely equal to Hillary Clinton, though neither one of them are equal to a white male.
What's bad for feminism is the archiac definition of the 1960's that just doesn't it the 21st century.
Teacher, may I quote your post above on my blog tomorrow as it is a superb analysi?
In other news, turneresq on Daily Kos just posted this most excellent diary, via information posted by John Cole on his Balloon Juice blog: John McCain: Ready to Vet on Day 3
The campaign of John McCain has sent a staff of eight people into Alaska to conduct background checks and vetting on Governor Sarah Palin. Word is they have eight rooms reserved at a Wasilla hotel.
The McCain campaign has gone to great lengths to present the selection of Sarah Palin as one made after a careful, meticulous vetting process. But evidence continues to suggest that the Arizona Republican made his VP choice with surprising haste.
On Saturday, a Democrat tasked with opposition research contacted the Huffington Post with this piece of information: as of this weekend, the McCain campaign had not gone through old newspaper articles from the Valley Frontiersman, Palin's hometown newspaper.
How does he know? The paper's (massive) archives are not online. And when he went to research past content, he was told he was the first to inquire.
"No one else had requested access before," said the source. "It's unbelievable. We were the only people to do that, which means the McCain camp didn't."
Teacher
99%sure, do it! Quote away, and thanks for the compliment.
GreenLadyHere
Teacher: Co-signing on ALL points!!! :>)
I believe that, for the comparative reasons that you have stated, when I heard of the "feminist" movement [just about/around it's beginnings - YES! :>) :>)], I wondered what "THEY" wanted??? I knew that "burning bras" wouldn't get "IT"; so their GOAL was very NOT CLEAR to me.
AND when their "power-trippin'" goal became more prominent, I KNEW that "BURNING BRAS" was the strategy furthest away from goal-attainment!! So why would I want to "join" a movement with faulty strategies??? Oh, NOT ta mention the fact that I was NEVA invited!! That was RACISM!!! :>)
Beside, I wasn't doing a "Waiting To Exhale" on my own clothes!! :>) :>) :>)
And, from where I sit/stand, RACISM has been directed at me MUCH MORE SO THAN SEXISM!!! And I CAN tell the difference!!!! :>) :>)
'Not all' is a misnomer on the journalist's part - more 'soccer moms' neo-cons than the opposition party cares to admit aren't happy about the VP, which is why they so unabashedly begged for Clinton's supposed 18 million glass ceiling folk from Day One.
T.
I hope the hip hop cats know that they should stay away from Governor Prop Palin(yeah, miss political prop brought to you by senator mcbush). Yeah stoopid Luda, you too....
Now, now, rikyrah, we have no proof that she's a hoor. Eh hee!

This shows McCain has totally enlisted Karl Rove's tactics. She is starting the dog whistle, of the black man attacking the woman. This is the thing that they hoped the Palin appointment would do. But, Obama himself has failed to take the bait.
They are trying to alert ignorant white women who may think the big angry black man is attacking the beautiful and helpless white female.
Unfortunately for them, it's already been done against Obama in the primaries and it didn't work. They are beating a dead horse.
How much have we heard from Cindy McCain during this election cycle? So far, she has only made direct hits on Michelle Obama ("I don't know about her but I'm proud of my country") and Barack Obama ("I'm offended that Barack Obama would say that")
The Obamas haven't breathed a word about her of course.
A poster on the huffpo blog had this message for Obama and I loved it. :-)
Janemas said "You, Joe Biden, a man of the working class people, poor and unfortunate should not have to stand one step down when debating Mrs. Palin. If the Republican party truly believes in equal rights as they claim then Palin should not receive a girly pass when it comes to who is fit to take the office of the Vice President of the United States, a heartbeat away from the Presidency. If so, then do all women deserve a pass in all levels of society? Please do not modify your political character in debating a woman in fear of what the republican media might say. Take some pointers from Momma Biden and BLOODY HER NOSE!"
Obama plans to mobilze volunteers for Hurricane Gustav
His campaign plans to use its huge e-mail list of supporters to voluteer or send money on the impact of Gustav becomes apparent and authorities know what kind of help is needed. The campaign is currently working with local authorities.
He states that there is always a concern about traveling in the middle of a storm and possibly drawing resources away from those on the ground due to Secret Service and other security requirements. It pulls police, fire and other departments away from focusing on the job at hand.
When the Iowa disaster hit the Gov. of Iowa asked the candidates to stay away for the very reason stated above, he needed all the resources for relief efforts. Obama canceled....others didn't listen.
GreenLadyHere
Texas: Cain't wait for the pics!!! he and Biden will have a "field day." Yaaaa!! :>) :>)

Obama - Biden '08
parker404
This is more than what Bush did during Katrina, and he had the entire federal government at his disposal.
Interesting link from a 1998 salon article Frank Rich mentions:
A joke too bad to print? How Sen. John McCain's Tasteless Two-liner about Chelsea Clinton and Janet Reno was censored out of the nations leading newspapers.
Americans, suspicious that the Obamas have benefited from affirmative action without being properly grateful, and skeptical that Michelle really likes “The Brady Bunch” and “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” reject the 47-year-old black contender as too uppity and untested.
Instead, they embrace 72-year-old John McCain and 44-year-old Sarah Palin, whose average age is 58, a mere two years older than the average age of the Obama-Biden ticket. Enthusiastic Republicans don’t see the choice of Palin as affirmative action, despite her thin résumé and gaping absence of foreign policy knowledge, because they expect Republicans to put an underqualified “babe,” as Rush Limbaugh calls her, on the ticket. They have a tradition of nominating fun, bantamweight cheerleaders from the West, like the previous Miss Congeniality types Dan Quayle and W., and then letting them learn on the job. So they crash into the globe a few times while they’re learning to drive, what’s the big deal?
Obama may have been president of The Harvard Law Review, but Palin graduated from the University of Idaho with a minor in poli-sci and worked briefly as a TV sports reporter. And she was tougher on the basketball court than the ethereal Obama, earning the nickname “Sarah Barracuda.”
TruthSeeker
Great. They're grooming a religious fanatic to be leader of your nation. Doesn't that send chills down your spine?
I'm not sure how Biden should handle the debates. Should he debate her, or should he address all his responses to John McCain and ignore her responses. It really is insulting to put such a lightweight up against Biden. You know she's going to attack him as being a "good old boy" and pretend to be a crusader against "old style Washington politics". He better be prepared for those minefields. And, I hope the moderators have some spine and ask appropriate questions.
Will Republicans enthusiastically nominate her?
Miranda
Can you picture Sarah Palin sitting down with any leaders in the free world? Even one? This woman was quoted as saying "its nice to get to visit other parts of the country" yesterday in PA...but she might be sitting down with the leaders of other NATO countries?? Huh?
Joe Biden knows John McCain better than Sarah Palin. Heck, reporters on the campaign trail know more about McCain than Palin!
I think the focus should stay firmly on McCain. Obama's got a brilliant team - they can coach Biden about any pitfalls in going against her. After all, he only has to get through one debate in October. He can handle it.
Reminder: Barack Obama and Joe Biden sit down for what, I believe, is their first national TV interview as a ticket tonight on "60 Minutes."

Just finished wating Obama and Biden's discussion on the economy in Toledo, OH. These guys really work well with each other. A great team. If you can catch one of their town hall discussions, please do so.

no worries. while they are busy gushing - Obama/Biden foot soldiers are busy working. The media has been wrong this entire election and we will prove them wrong again come November.
Exactly. "Political wisdom" has failed them time and time again.
I volunteered in the spring and I'll be back out there again because, in spite of the folly of McPain, we can still take nothing for granted.
JJP and other outlets reported a few weeks ago on how some Republican operatives were going to challenge a lot of Obama registered voters to make sure they are legit (translation: try to disenfranchise uniformed voters).
We've got to keep registering even more voters and keep talking to our neighbors and friends and anyone who will listen. Everyone is not online getting info and details so they are beholden to cable news soundbites or email chain letters. There is still a lot of work to be done.
