All I had to do was read the first paragraph to know that was some bullshit. "Hillary would have won if John Edwards was exposed back then."

First off, that's assuming that ALL of John Edwards' voters would have voted for Hillary. They didn't want to vote for Hillary, that's why they voted for John Edwards. If they had wanted to vote for Hillary, they would have voted for her. She came in THIRD. Billary Inc. is not wrapping their minds around the fact that the VOTERS didn't want her ass. They didn't want her in Iowa, they didn't want her on Super Tuesday, they didn't want her in the Potamac Primaries...they didn't want her ass! Wrap yo' mind around that!

Let me just add: John Edwards WAS exposed back then. The Enquirer ran a story on him and Rielle Hunter back in October. They ran another story about her being pregnant in December. How come Billary Inc. didn't dig deeper into that?

See, this raises MORE questions about JE's fraudulent campaign IMO. This is my crazy theory: John Edwards ran a fraudulent campaign because he was a spoiler to Barack Obama. Wolfson just said Billary Inc. knew about the affair. Edwards was supposed to siphon off votes from Obama, not Clinton. IMO Edwards dropped out in January because the baby was about to be born and if he continued and the affair were to be revealed, it would have hurt HILLARY because people would have been reminded of Bill & Monica. Edwards only endorsed Obama because that's the way the winds were blowing. I have no doubt in my mind he and Elizabeth were saying that Obama was "uppity." Edwards and Clinton were working together. All the pieces are falling into place now.

YES! It looks like you've nailed it. Except, if he was part of the Clinton machine, he would have endorsed her instead of O. If she literally had half of the popular vote (18 million) and was REALLY winning, why wouldn't he give her further validation?

According to many in these parts, he, in fact, did endorse Hillary before talking about himself and then stating his support for Barack almost like an afterthought.

I didn't see it that way when it happened, but now I do.

OK I love Michelle Obama and without her for many reasons we would not be celebrating this accomplishment in August of Barack winning the nomination. She really helped him with women and with Southern Black audiences. However, what has she really done to warrant a primetime speaking spot on Monday. Will this not look a bit smug. Correct me if I am wrong - did Hillary speak at the '92 or '96 conventions?

From the start, Michelle Obama has been prominent on the stump for her husband. She appeared before thousands at UCLA along with O!, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg and Maria Shriver Schwarzenegger, a couple of days before Super Tuesday. In fact, her speech was so persuasive that I became an Obama supporter at that moment, voting for him rather than Edwards on Super Tuesday, since Edwards had already suspended his campaign. The Clintons were never an option, nor were any of the other primary candidates.

Mrs. Obama became a target for the neo-cons et al. because she was so out front from the start of the campaign.

This is a different time and a different campaign like no other, so it is perfectly reasonable that she would be a speaker at the 2008 DNC Convention.

my only concern is that this will set them up for unnecesary criticism about giving the oppt to someone else in the party.

Barack said Michelle has ultimate veto power over everything, she had to agree to him running before he said yes...that's enough for me! Plus I need for my 7 yr old neice to see her speak in front of that huge crowd in all her glorious self...hell, I need it.

She'll be opening the convention and Barack will be closing.

The whole world has been invited to "be the first to know" when the Obama VP choice is announced,

via text message to every cell phone that requests it (and, reading the missive carefully, the news will move simultaneously via email to the millions already on the campaign's list).

Most likely, the decision to drop the news from the bottom up and horizontally, bypassing the middlemen of the media, reflects a confidence that the person chosen will be satisfactory to the grassroots supporters.

Or - an alternate and opposite reading might suggest - that if it is a tooth-puller of a choice (i.e. a Bayh, a Biden, or a Clinton) it will be even more vital to deliver the talking points and arguments in favor of that person to the supporters on the ground.

But more likely this reflects the former: in which he or she will either be an outside-of-the-beltway (Kaine, Sebelius, Schweitzer, Richardson, etcetera) change agent, or someone inside Washington that would nonetheless excite the Internet bases of Obama supporters (i.e. Dodd).

I'm going to trust him on this one, (but it better not be Hillary). I'm excited about it.

Has anyone noticed that within days of the RNC releasing it's ad of Democrats praising McCain, ending with Hillary's quote alluding to Barack failing the CIC test, Russia invades Georgia and based upon A SERIES OF STATEMENTS the McCain camp is claiming Barack failed the CIC test?

But wait. There's more.

The camp is also claiming the Dangerous One is Supreme because he "foretold" the invasion and framing Barack's camps questioning of his lobbyists interests in Georgia as in line with Moscow.

You can't make this bullshit up.

So many of the posters here are obviously not low information voters. Most of us (I assume) are more aware of international matters than the average American is. You guys are all posting about, pipelines, NATO, Putin and such, but I would bet that most low information voters fall into 1 of 2 camps:

Camp 1: Commie-Haters: You know the type. They hate all things Russian, i.e. Vodka, Bears, the Kremlin, ah..circular furry hats.... So what they get is that Russian is once again up to it's old Commie tricks. We beat them once, let's beat them again.

Camp 2: War-Haters: They hate all wars, regardless of the circumstances. They are just as likely to protest "The War of the Roses" as they are to protest Vietnam, Iraq, etc. You know the type: "Give Peace A Chance".

I would hope that the average American is somewhere in the middle like myself. I don't hate Putin (or Russia for that matter), but any man for whom W can gaze into his eyes and "see his soul" should not be trusted. And let face it, Russia was once a world power, and the people who have had a taste of power and lost it, always seems to want it back. And while I'm no war protester, it seems to me that we are already in the midst of 2 wars, Afghanistan & Iraq and we are stretched thin as it is. Until we can at the least partially resolves one of those 2 wars, while it's good for the President to be as "tough" and firm as possible with Russia, I would hope that the next President or the current one, does not intend to star a 2nd (or would it be 3rd) Cold War by taking some type of "action" against Russia. It seems to me that of the 2 presidential contenders, one of them is more likely to be amenable(?) to starting some military action against Russia.

But I've never served in the military, so maybe I just don't understand as much as some

John Von Schlicher, 87, of Florida, said he will support McCain. Schlicher sharply criticized the Democratic-controlled Congress for not funding VA hospitals. (Spending on veterans benefits will increase 11 percent this year.)

Duke Hendershot, a double amputee retired Marine who served in Vietnam, supported McCain’s run for president in 2000 but is undecided this year.

I'm amazed McCain has any support among veterans.

And DOUBLE that for women. I don't see how any female could possibly vote for the crypster. He is against choice, he is against equal pay for equal work; He is even against insurance companies providing birthcontrol pills (even though women pay insurance premiums), but is for them providing viagra. If I could, I would make commercials showing how much he hates women. In writing this I've worked myself into a lather, but this issue warrants the anger of all of us.

Well Teacher now, Viagra is for a sexual dysfunction whereas birth control is just for loose women - that's my understanding from Bill O'Lielly.

Can email's be faked? I think this reporter got paper copies, not the electronic versions. If the e-mails are as benign as the sneak-peak, I wouldn't be surprised if this is a plant by the Clinton's to repair Hillary's image. They could fake the emails and blame everything on Bill or Penn. At the same time, they can smear Obama with the stuff written in there. Why would anyone release these, would they keep them to write a book or something?

It's sure not going to help Hillary retire her debt!

She doesn't have any debt. She is replenishing her coffers to run again in 2012.

McCain's lobbyist ties to Georgia

There are 8 a.m. calls every day in which the campaign settles on the daily message or attack. Someone in Mr. McCain’s entourage — typically Nicolle Wallace, a Schmidt ally and a veteran of Mr. Bush’s 2004 campaign and White House who recently joined the campaign as a traveling senior adviser — is given the responsibility of making sure Mr. McCain agrees to the message and tries to stick to it.

There's some spin in there, when they said he's studious about the economy. It is disturbing when the campaign staff has to keep the candidate on track...how would he govern?

A homegirl calls in and says she thought the world was ending, to stunned silence by the reporter. Nobody told that broadcaster how to deal with Armageddon anxiety. I shouldn't laugh, but there's something nuts about this.

It was interesting how some people said they thought it was a plane going down(which is what I thought) and some said they thought it was a terrorist attack! A terrorist attack??? We've never had one here in T.O., why would anybody think that? Some have been infected with the fear consciousness from the coverage that bleeds over from the USA.

Funny how what is central to our thoughts come out when we're under pressure. I'll bet there are people who thought it was an alien invasion.

They tell of a woman who brought 2 trays of tuna sandwiches and this kindhearted woman said she was so intent on making the sandwiches, she mixed them up in the bathtub.

OK to satisfy my own curosity I decided to look at how the electoral map forecasts look since the daily polls make it seem like such a nail biter. Looking at this information, it gives me some insight into why the Obama campaign is not running around stressing about the polls.

I also want to believe the Clintons might be stroking their own egos a bit, but will not do anything to really rock the boat in Denver. No matter of ambition surely would allow them to destroy the Dems realistic chances to retake the White House. Of course they run the risk it could get out of their control.

George Clooney once famously declared he could never run for public office because he’d ‘slept with too many women, done too many drugs and been to too many parties’.

But now the Hollywood heart-throb has entered the political arena at
the highest level – by becoming an unofficial adviser to US Presidential front-runner Barack Obama.

Oscar-winner Clooney, 47, is said to be helping the Democratic candidate to polish his image at home and abroad.

But he is also sharing with Obama his strong opinions on Iraq and the Middle East.

Sources say the actor has tried to hide the pair’s friendship for fear his Left-wing views and playboy image would hurt the Presidential hopeful’s bid for the White House.

But Democratic Party insiders have revealed that Clooney and Obama regularly send texts and emails to each other and speak by phone at least twice a week.

One said last night: ‘They are extremely close. A number of members of the Hollywood community, including Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, offered to help raise funds for Barack but it was with George that he struck up this amazing affinity.

‘George has been giving him advice on things such as presentation, public speaking and body language and he also emails him constantly about policy, especially the Middle East.

‘George is pushing him to be more “balanced” on issues such as US relations with Israel.

'George is pro-Palestinian. And he is also urging Barack to withdraw unconditionally from Iraq if he wins.

He's doing everything he can, like hosting fundraisers for Obama in Switzerland.

Originally, Obama had decided to castigate both Georgia and Russia over the outbreak of hostilities in South Ossetia, even while Russian bombs fell on Georgia itself. Today, Obama has changed his tune, following McCain’s lead in demanding that Russia cease its aggression:

Obama called for direct talks among all sides and said the United States, the U.N. Security Council and other parties should try to help bring about a peaceful resolution.

“I condemn Russia’s aggressive actions and reiterate my call for an immediate ceasefire,” Obama said in a statement.

“Russia must stop its bombing campaign, cease flights of Russian aircraft in Georgian airspace, and withdraw its ground forces from Georgia.”

Here’s his original statement:

“I strongly condemn the outbreak of violence in Georgia, and urge an immediate end to armed conflict,” Obama said in a written statement. “Now is the time for Georgia and Russia to show restraint and to avoid an escalation to full-scale war. Georgia’s territorial integrity must be respected.”

McCain, however, initially responded sooner than Obama (who, it should be noted, was in transit to Hawaii), and with a great deal more accuracy:

Today news reports indicate that Russian military forces crossed an internationally-recognized border into the sovereign territory of Georgia. Russia should immediately and unconditionally cease its military operations and withdraw all forces from sovereign Georgian territory. What is most critical now is to avoid further confrontation between Russian and Georgian military forces. The consequences for Euro-Atlantic stability and security are grave.

The government of Georgia has called for a cease-fire and for a resumption of direct talks on South Ossetia with international mediators. The U.S. should immediately convene an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council to call on Russia to reverse course. The US should immediately work with the EU and the OSCE to put diplomatic pressure on Russia to reverse this perilous course it has chosen. We should immediately call a meeting of the North Atlantic Council to assess Georgia’s security and review measures NATO can take to contribute to stabilizing this very dangerous situation. Finally, the international community needs to establish a truly independent and neutral peacekeeping force in South Ossetia.

McCain obviously took time to determine first that Russia had indeed attacked Georgia before demanding restraint from the victim. It’s apparent that McCain has a better grasp of the situation and understood its ramifications as events unfolded. Obama issued a boilerplate statement that generically demanded that everyone start getting along, and had to modify his stance as his 300 foreign-policy advisers had a chance to tutor him on the conflict.

I’d rather vote for the man who gets it right and has spent years studying foreign affairs, warfare, and American strategic needs than the man who makes it up as he goes along. McCain is right; this was a 3 AM moment, and Obama proved himself unprepared and unsuited to answer the call.

McCain has a Georgia lobbyist working on his campaign. Georgia, which started the conflict, has a terrible human rights record and the people of Ossetia want to get out from under them. Some believe that Georgia has been planning this move for months and has been developing a PR game to paint Russia as the aggressor when it was THEY who crossed the line and provoked their response.

Obama's first response was the correct one, though neither Georgia nor Russia are blameless here. Georgia is being disingenuous, and Russia needs not to overreact. McCain is a hot-head who talks tough, but should know that he needs to cool it. We can't afford to get involved in or help to escalate any more tensions around the world until we extricate ourselves from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Why is McCain's staff cutting off media access?

Last week, McCain's campaign staff restricted the national press corps to 38 minutes of access to the candidate. Not 38 minutes per press conference, not 38 minutes per day, but 38 minutes for the entire week.

Moreover, most of the access consisted of McCain reading a prepared statements. The media was allowed to ask him questions on just one occasion all week, and that came on Friday afternoon -- hours before the Olympics were set to start.

Certainly part of the issue is that they would rather McCain talk with local reporters who are generally less combative. And they also feel that McCain's tendency to shoot from the hip hurts their ability to control campaign message.

They don't want anyone to question him about adultery/infidelity since the Edwards story is in the news right now.

Teacher - they don't want anyone to question him about anything while Barack is on vacation. It would be harder to cover up.

Sadly, this is probably a smart move by the McCain camp.

Yeah but none of this should matter to an election, it was just sex. All that should matter is whether or not he is able to do his job or not.

I wouldn't assume it was 'just sex' as I'm certain Edwards will be 'revealed' to be the father. Since he presented himself as a family man in a traditional marriage we can certainly evaluate his actions versus his words since they don't add up. It is also very hypocritical of him because he does not support a federal gay marriage amendment. He is the last person to offer moralizations or pass judgement and should be held to the same high standards he claims but fails to adhere to. He is only human but has displayed a weakness in his character all the same. It could be about money or some other equally important issue but the last thing we needed was another Democratic President with sexual misconduct!!!! I will say it again. No matter how hypocritical the Rethugs were for going after Clinton they were able to successfully frame it in a way that reflected poorly on the Democrats. Then Clinton lied about it. Then the Rethugs made it about morality and
because Clinton had been so self-serving the Dems were already in a weakened position politically. Gore distanced himself. Bush did a lot of disenfranchisement of just enough voters to add to all the people who were turned off and stole the election. And now here we are. Edwards should not have run period! If he had really cared about the direction this country was taking he would not have.

Exacly, woman. Considering that Edwards suspended his campaign back in January - at least 10 days prior to Super Tuesday (Feb. 5) - and about 2 weeks after NE first published the cover story about his adultery/illegitimate child, and considering that at this time he is neither campaigning for nor holds an elected office, and wasn't a serious VP contender IMO, I don't get what all the folderol is about.

In fact, looking at it another way, why would he even feel the need to publicly confess this at this time with nothing on the table for him except humiliation and condemnation?

There's a self-righteous, judgmental way to look at this and there's a poltical way to look at it. IMO this was very savvy on the Dems' part (yeah, the Dems knew and don't view his not backing anyone until late in the primary as anything but a party negotiation for just such a moment as this); JRE took one for his party.

Putting aside the immorality of his behavior, which is ultimately between him and God, this did much to pull attention away from the campaign while Obama is on vacation. What's more, McCaint's private life and misogyny now comes under scrutiny.

Simply put, JRE made a sacrifice fly for his party.

I presume you mean since he was a JRE supporter? He feels probably like I feel, since I was initially a JRE supporter as well, even contributing to his campaign and attending a primary event for him in Bev Hills. I was an Edwards supporter as far back as 2004, and thought the ticket should have been flipped.

The mistake that Billy Jeff and other whites, as well as black progressives, make is that they forget that Obama is half-white, raised in a white environment by Midwestern white grandparents.

He looks black, walks black, and has a black accent, yet he's the white guy who looks black but, when applying to Harvard, didn't list his race, and was accepted WITHOUT affirmative action, unlike Dark Sith, Justice Thomas, Secretary Rice or any of the other 9K+ black elected officials.

He's the genuine black candidate that Billy Jeff always thought he was though he wasn't and, because Obama looks black and married black, people make the mistake of dealing with him strictly as a black man; hence Billy Jeff's Jesse Jackson comment. McCain't and his crazies also make the same mistake. Believe it or not, Turd Blossom came closer to analyzing Obama correctly than anyone else - he just used the wrong analogy with the country club stuff.

Barack's political opponents deal with him as if he isn't their equal because he looks black; black folk deal with him as if he'll be president of a non-existent Black America rather than the USA, and will thusly solve most of the chronic ills that took generations to become so acute.

All are making a HUGE mistake, one that Obama will continue to make useful throughout the 2nd term of his moderate, progressive presidency. Make no mistake - Obama isn't too far left-leaning - he's nearly as centrist as Billy Jeff.

Unfortunately, it is to their detriment that people still judge folk by their skin color.

As usual, you hit the nail on the head, CraigHickman. I initially didn't support Obama because I saw no real differences in him and the Clintons; I saw both of them as corporate candidates. Obama has incorporated more populist policies in his campaign, and he has rejected public campaign financing, but he still has corporate bundlers. I understand that, to some extent, they are a necessary evil.

Though he slung his schlong outside of marriage, I like Edwards because he rabidly attacked corporatism; IMO, he had a great populist message. I still like his poverty eradication plan as well.

I don't get why his being supposedly "busted" coming out of the Beverly Hills Hotel is a big deal ... again, he has nothing to gain by publicly admitting this. All that proves is that the baby is most probably his.

A much more logical and rhetorical question is 'Why do people lie at all?' I saw Edwards on PBS discussing his poverty fund programming just after the latest NE story; when asked, he denied the story, yet a few weeks later he comes clean, making a very odd statement or two in the bargain - 'I wasn't in love' and 'that isn't my baby.'

In her diary post on Daily Kos, EE said she knew about the affair and that it happened in 2006, so both of them knew when he began his run for the nomination. I think that is odd in itself; why would they as y'all say put the election in jeopardy knowing what they knew? This speaks volume to me about their agreements/arrangments. Obviously YMMV.

That said, to me, what he had to gain by publically admitting ...whatever...is to put the story to sleep. My opinion is that, if you tell more lies and half truths that are illogical, obvious lies and half truths, it makes people ask more questions and the story does not go away. It only leads people to ask more questions and it delays the restoration of trust. I'm going to presume that his reason for making any public statement at all was to make the story go away and start the healing process with his constituents. Why would they do/say things to keep the story alive if they want the story to go away? Who forced them to make any statements whatsoever? Their current lies are going to prevent them from moving on. Well, I get the feeling that this is all well-orchestrated, Teacher, especially now that the chick says that there will be no paternity test (probably because it's already known who the baby daddy is by the Edwardses and the baby mama). I think by coming out and admitting it, they defused whatever else could be viewed by the National Enquirer as hidden or secretive. I still believe that this was a political sacrifice on behalf of the Democratic party rather than an 'I got caught so I gotta come clean' type deal, else he would have come clean when the story first appeared back in January, when he suspended his campaign. This way he loses nothing and neither does the Democratic party, since he isn't a candidate for anything.

As I said before, I believe it was all calculated for a variety of reasons, most of them political. It was a sacrifice fly, and I believe that smart woman and life partner that she is, Elizabeth Edwards is involved in the planning and strategizing as much as she was iinvolved in campaigning for him.

This is why I'm questioning their continuous lying. I don't think I can make any judgement about any hypothetical arrangement in their marriage. Even if I knew they had one, which I will probably never know, I could not possibly understand it, for the reasons you already mentioned. What I can see is that they are still lying, and I'm questioning how they are benefitting from doing so. I see it as a liability, not a benefit.

I would agree with this if I thought they had come totally clean, but I don't think they have. I think it would have benefitted them to do so, and I think they will be further harmed by not doing so. I don't know her, but I have tried to put myself in her shoes. I can't do it (because I don't know her) without her seeming kind of pathetic to me. It's really hard to say what we would do in certain situations until we get there. All I can do is project my feelings/opinions onto her. As a dying person, I'm sure she is loving her kids deeply. I'm sure she is trying to console her adult daughter, who is probably more ashamed/angry than anyone.

Let me break it down:

Most people aren't pissed at John Edwards for stepping out and getting a little nooky, and if they are, it's because his wife is DYING of cancer.

Most people are pissed off at John Edwards for:

a) having an affair...

b) ...then running for the Democratic nomination in a CRUCIAL election year knowing this affair was going to come to light

c) when it did come to light via the National Enquirer in October, continued to run for President

d) lied to his staffers about the affair and had them lying to other people & the press about the affair. People who had put their reputations on the line.

e) continued to solicit money from voters knowing he was running a fraudulent campaign and would have to step down at some point

f) paid this woman $114K to make some YouTube videos where she lovingly took shots of his crotch and flirted with him behind the camera

g) even after he left the race, continued to offer himself up (even as recent as a couple of weeks ago) as a vice presidential nominee or attorney general nominee --- knowing that when this affair came to light, it would destroy the Democrats' chances of getting the White House.

1) Republicans can cheat; Americans look the other way.

2) Democrats can't do that.

3) John Edwards cheated on a woman dying of cancer. Now I fully believe that Elizabeth Edwards is up to her eyeballs in this situation, but everyone is going to sympathize with the poor dying woman. That's just the way it is.

4) Americans don't care about the "issues." That's been proven time and time again. We're more concerned about a paper Michelle wrote 25 years ago or what Obama's pastor's friend said than the issues.

So yeah, a John Edwards affair would have delivered the White House to McCain.

Regarding the election, I just don't think it would have been such a big deal when compared to war, deficit, foreclosure crises, job loss vs. Edwards with his fake smile getting a piece on the side. . . . . I am just not feeling it. Luckily we won't have to find out so that is good.

John Edwards had the temerity to go on National tv and state in a funky tone that he had not been invited to the Democratic convention. He said it like he was somewhat offended (@ Obama, naturally). I hope he gets sweated/threatened with campaign funding charges. I hope he is at least thoroughly investigated.

For all of his so-called concern about poverty, he really hates being beat by a Black person.

Agree with all of the above and firmly believe that his dirt is the reason he dropped out of the race earlier than he had to (January). Why would he get his friends to set a one time 2006 jumpoff and her kid up in a fancy mansion and arrange $15K/mo payments to the woman? He was dilly dallying with this chick while he was running for President, telling the press he was "vetted" and people SHOULD look at candidates' behavior to see if that's somebody they want to vote for.

I am really confused by the fact that some people are willing to overlook the Edwards' reckless behavior in this matter. Yes, the fact that he cheated on his wife is a matter that should be worked out between the two of them, but he brought the public, i.e. his supporters, into it when he ran on the family man image.

Also, there are questions that came up today that he hired this woman as a cover for the affair, in which case, campaign money was being used to support his illicit behavior. I for one, wouldn't want my money going to this type of shenanigans.
