I heard “I Only Want to Be With You” when I was eight years old, and fell in love with her voice.

She's also on one of Elton John's early albums, Tumbleweed Connection, singing backup on “(There Goes) A Well Known Gun.”

When I heard her do the theme song from that movie about the Profumo Affair, I knew she was back on time.

So it was a real shock to me when she died in The Nineties. Didn't know she was gay until then. Bought her biography thereafter. She sang “The Look of Love” after a night of making love…and it sounds that way. Yes, indeed. She was The White Queen of Soul. She toughed it out in an elevator with Aretha, but Aretha was more threatened by someone like…Roberta Flack.

I also told them that Chef on South Park was actually Isaac Hayes. I wonder if some of them are remembering this as they hear about Isaac's death. But why should I fool myself about these white kids…

When “Walk On By” first came out at a local record store, my mother stood outside just listening. She listened the whole time. And you know how loooonnnnngggg that song is.

If one can stop everything they are doing just to listen to a song…and how pitiful songs are nowadays with people who have no real pipes or ability to work hard to get good over time…well, don't make me start.

Don't put down The White Queen of Soul, Dusty Springfield, who sang “The Look of Love.” She still deserves props.
