Soul legend Isaac Hayes dies
CNN) — Soul singer and arranger Isaac Hayes, who won Grammy awards and an Oscar for the theme from the 1971 action film “Shaft,” has died, sheriff’s officials in Memphis, Tennessee, reported Sunday.
Singer Issac Hayes seen performing in the U.K. last year. Hayes was found dead Sunday at age 65.
Relatives found Hayes, 65, unconscious in his home next to a still-running treadmill, said Steve Shular, a spokesman for the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department.
Paramedics attempted to revive him and took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 2 p.m., the sheriff’s department said.
No foul play is suspected, the agency said in a written statement.
Hayes was a longtime songwriter and arranger for Stax Records in Memphis, playing in the studio’s backup band and crafting tunes for artists such as Otis Redding and Sam and Dave in the 1960s.
He released his first solo album in 1967, and his 1969 follow-up, “Hot Buttered Soul,” became a platinum hit.
In 1971, the theme from “Shaft” topped the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks and won an Academy Award for best original theme song. The song and the movie score also won Grammy awards for best original score and movie theme.

“I went back on speaking engagements and encouraged African-Americans to go to Africa [to] interact socially, culturally and/or economically,” he said

I loved “The Theme From Shaft”. Also loved “Do Your Thing”. Brings back such great memories. He was a music legend! Sympathy goes out to his family. May God comfort them during this sad time!

SO true! Isaac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield scored movie soundtracks that are now classics and have long since passed the test of time. Where are the Isaac Hayes and Curtis Mayfields of today? It's very sad to me. My sister had to explain to my nephew that Isaac was “Chef” from South Park so he would know who he was.

His versions of Walk On By and The Look of Love were better than the originals. Most of the people with record contracts these days lack any real talent anyway, but artists like Hayes and Mayfield were special event then.

When “Walk On By” first came out at a local record store, my mother stood outside just listening. She listened the whole time. And you know how loooonnnnngggg that song is.
If one can stop everything they are doing just to listen to a song…and how pitiful songs are nowadays with people who have no real pipes or ability to work hard to get good over time…well, don't make me start.
Don't put down The White Queen of Soul, Dusty Springfield, who sang “The Look of Love.” She still deserves props.

I had to explain to students in my comp class the difference between Motown, and artists from Stax in Memphis, for example. They were stunned. They lumped all black music from the Sixties and Seventies as just Motown.
I also told them that Chef on South Park was actually Isaac Hayes. I wonder if some of them are remembering this as they hear about Isaac's death. But why should I fool myself about these white kids…

I heard “I Only Want to Be With You” when I was eight years old, and fell in love with her voice.
She's also on one of Elton John's early albums, Tumbleweed Connection, singing backup on “(There Goes) A Well Known Gun.”
When I heard her do the theme song from that movie about the Profumo Affair, I knew she was back on time.
So it was a real shock to me when she died in The Nineties. Didn't know she was gay until then. Bought her biography thereafter. She sang “The Look of Love” after a night of making love…and it sounds that way. Yes, indeed. She was The White Queen of Soul. She toughed it out in an elevator with Aretha, but Aretha was more threatened by someone like…Roberta Flack.

I can believe it. One of his obits said it best to me – Stax was “tight, catchy pop, but full of sweat and grit, a proudly unpolished Southern alternative to Motown.”

When “Walk On By” first came out at a local record store, my mother stood outside just listening. She listened the whole time. And you know how loooonnnnngggg that song is.
If one can stop everything they are doing just to listen to a song…and how pitiful songs are nowadays with people who have no real pipes or ability to work hard to get good over time…well, don't make me start.
Don't put down The White Queen of Soul, Dusty Springfield, who sang “The Look of Love.” She still deserves props.

I had to explain to students in my comp class the difference between Motown, and artists from Stax in Memphis, for example. They were stunned. They lumped all black music from the Sixties and Seventies as just Motown.
I also told them that Chef on South Park was actually Isaac Hayes. I wonder if some of them are remembering this as they hear about Isaac's death. But why should I fool myself about these white kids…

I heard “I Only Want to Be With You” when I was eight years old, and fell in love with her voice.
She's also on one of Elton John's early albums, Tumbleweed Connection, singing backup on “(There Goes) A Well Known Gun.”
When I heard her do the theme song from that movie about the Profumo Affair, I knew she was back on time.
So it was a real shock to me when she died in The Nineties. Didn't know she was gay until then. Bought her biography thereafter. She sang “The Look of Love” after a night of making love…and it sounds that way. Yes, indeed. She was The White Queen of Soul. She toughed it out in an elevator with Aretha, but Aretha was more threatened by someone like…Roberta Flack.

I can believe it. One of his obits said it best to me – Stax was “tight, catchy pop, but full of sweat and grit, a proudly unpolished Southern alternative to Motown.”
