Obama's campaign has written the Department of Justice demanding a criminal investigation of the "American Issues Project," the vehicle through which Dallas investor Harold Simmons is financing the advertisements. The Obama campaign - and tens of thousands of supporters - are pressuring television networks and affiliates to reject the ads with some success: CNN and Fox News are not airing the attacks, and some local affiliates have also refused.

Obama has also launched his own response ad, directly addressing Simmons' attempt to link him to domestic terror.

The project is "a knowing and willful attempt to violate the strictures of federal election law," Obama general counsel Bob Bauer wrote to Deputy Assistant Attorney General John Keeney last week in a letter provided to Politico. Bauer argued that by advocating Obama's defeat, the ad should be subject to the contribution limits of federal campaign law, not the anything-goes regime of issue advocacy.

On 8/22 two friends and I were rejected from a club because we were black.

After being told to get out of line for "not having reservations" we watched the "door manager" let in the group of white females behind us who didn't have reservations and all the other people in line for that matter. When we saw two black men get put off the line I decided to ask the next group of people, who happened to be white, if they had reservations. When they said no, we sat back and watched them get let right in.

The Hispanic manager we spoke to, who gave us a terrible excuse for why it happened, called over a black bouncer who was to 'explain to us what was going on,' confirmed what we already know, we didn't get in because of the color of our skin. There was also a group of Asians who were asked if they had reservations, then told to get out of line. It wasn't just Blacks, it was everyone not white.

After emerging from the backstage area 15 minutes behind schedule, Michelle posed at the podium, wordlessly, with one hand on Sasha's shoulder, for the benefit of various convention staff who worked on lighting and camera placement. Then, Michelle took the gavel at the podium and raised it halfway into the air, posed again for a moment, and then set the gavel gently back down.

At which point Sasha stood up on her tippy-toes and grabbed the gavel herself. After raising it as high in the air as her arms would allow, Sasha brought the gavel down hard, and let out an accompanying squeal of delight.

For having had the honor of witnessing some spontaneous behavior, the deeply bored press corps let out a collective, grateful laugh.

DENVER — Hillary Rodham Clinton preached unity Monday in her first appearance at the Democratic National Convention, insisting she is doing everything possible to prove her full support for Barack Obama.

Her first stop in Denver was a breakfast meeting for New York Democrats, where supporters waved signs declaring "Hillary Made History."

The New York senator was quick to put Republican John McCain in her sights, saying the de facto GOP nominee was running ads using her words to try to divide the Democrats.

Clinton's response: "I'm Hillary Clinton, and I do not approve that message."

"We were not all on the same side as Democrats, but we are now," she said. "We are united and we are together and we are determined."

"There is no doubt in anyone's mind that this is Barack Obama's convention," she said, adding that it is only natural for there to be some lingering issues to resolve after a tough primary.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports this morning that a key figure in the Tony Rezko trial served as Biden’s Midwest campaign manager in his run for the 1988 presidential nomination and remained close enough to assist in the early stages of his 2008 run. Joseph Cari pled guilty to a federal extortion charge this year and awaits sentencing.

When state Senator Barack Obama cosponsored legislation creating and increasing subsidies for low-income housing developers in Illinois, and wrote letters to get $14 million specifically for two of them (one was Tony Rezko), his official acts benefited several friends and donors in that industry. A similar thing happened when Obama earmarked $200,000 for Jesse Jackson’s investment fund in Chicago and $225,000 for Father Michael Pfleger’s neighborhood ministry.

Those are just a few among dozens of examples of how, when Senator Obama governs, his friends do well. Such arrangements give the lie to Obama’s self-projected image as a reformer who wants to change government and restore America’s faith in politics.

Not only is this bad for ol' Fred, but it is an indication of the type of labor policies John McCain would follow--more of the same.

FedEx Corp. tells its ground-service drivers when to work, what to charge customers and what kind of socks and shoes to wear, the workers say. Drivers who sued the company argue that makes them employees.

Founder and Chief Executive Officer Fred Smith opposes changing their status from independent contractors to employees. ``We've given that entrepreneurial opportunity to thousands of contractors to own, grow and expand their own business,'' Smith told investors in a Jan. 10 conference call. ``That's what freedom is all about.''

The media feeding frenzy is on... with more than enough to fuel the storyline about a rift between Barack Obama and the Clintons on the convention's opening day. This will continue all the way up until the roll call vote, which will be cut short perhaps ending with New York, when Clinton herself would call for unanimous backing for Obama from the convention floor.

Then the television networks will help the Obama campaign get things back on track. Realistically, the best the Republicans can hope for is that Obama's "bounce" from the convention is minimal.

I just want to point out that this is not a 'slam-dunk' for Obama.

Dems are famous for getting way ahead of themselves.

I believe this is a center-right electorate and I think Obama made a big mistake, aligning himself with the far-left wing of the Democrat party. Now he's scrambling to get back to the center but he's got real problems defining himself to independents who call themselves 'somewhat conservative'.

I post the items and comments from the conservative point of view because I think they have merit and should be discussed and debated. Most times these posts fall on deaf ears, but sometimes they spur interesting conversation.

Michelle did grow up on the South Side of Chicago, in a middle-class neighborhood that during her girlhood was transformed by white flight. Have'nt read it yet, but he was on was of the programs last night. He basically said the reason she lost was simply because Obama ran a better , organized and strategic campaign. Exactly. I've wondered where McCain's temper's been this whole campaign.

The dems have been touting him as a mean, foul-tempered, warmongering, hot head.

In truth, he is mature, tough and passionate. We all know it, and the dems are trying to exaggerate this truth and turn it into a liability.

It's best to acknowledge his wealth and note that he wants to enact policies that will provide opportunities for average Americans to become more prosperous.

"I'm wealthy. I'm blessed. Isn't this country the greatest! I want everyone to be rich!" I'm telling you, it would work.

Color me unimpressed by his performance with respect to the Georgian conflict. He didn't do any thing to mitigate conflict. It was all bluster. Credit goes to Sarkozy for taking the time and effort to resolve the problem.

Chris is right regarding Rendell. My husband actually thought he could he be a good surrogate for Obama after the primaries because he was so, um gritty when it came to defending the Clintons.
