The situation had already worsened in August when Georgian security forces attempted to secure control of the Abkhazian river valley of the Kodori Gorge in order to regain control of the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Tbilisi then called for the replacement of Russia as the official mediator in Georgia's regional conflicts. Moscow maintains peacekeepers there along with two military bases.

This escalation signals that Georgia is likely to become the catalyst for U.S.-Russian geopolitical conflict for strategic and economic influence in the Caucasus.

Already the economic consequences of the war are being felt as Western specialists involved in helping Georgia develop its infrastructure began to flee.

Americans and Britons gathered in hotels in the capital Tbilisi to organise road convoys into neighbouring Armenia after Russia closed its air space and most airlines cancelled flights after a military base close to the airport was bombed on Friday.

"Its the last straw," said a British architect who was preparing to leave Georgia for good. Three days ago we were making promising progress but now two thirds of our staff have been called up and its simply too dangerous to stay in Tbilisi."

The Georgian government yesterday ordered the evacuation of the country's parliament and all official buildings amid fears that they could become new Russian targets.

By a swimming pool in one hotel, a nervous American clutching a Blackberry read out the latest advice from the US Embassy to her friends. All dependants had been ordered to evacuate and anyone in the country for "non-essential" reasons was also urged to leave.

At the news, one of her friends sank his head into his hands.

"The Georgian dream is over," he said.

I don't think many blacks outside of this country feel we're pressuring them as they do that we are "culture-less". We are also lazy, shiftless, and just about everything else most people (outside ourselves) say we are. I've heard this speech from Africans more than Europeans. You would think we (African-Americans) were a different race all together, isolated from any common bonds. I don't get it sometimes, I really don't.

Well, the way continental Africans see it, we are very blessed to have access to the resources that we have in the states (too numerous to name). They see many examples of us rejecting education. Many African nations do not have compulsary education, so they see going to school as a privilege. When I was in Senegal, I saw 8 or 9 kids gathered around a book. They don't have the access that we take for granted. When they ask you for things, they want paper, pencils & any books you are willing to part with. In my school district, it is the continental African rather than the African American who graduates at the top of the class. I know lots of continental Africans, but they're all very affluent professionals. They also believe in marriage. I have found them to be very approachable as long as you are nice. As stupid as this sounds, some of my best friends are continental African.

I haven't put my tin foil sky on to call Wes Clarke the VP candidate, but I will ask this: what other DEMOCRAT can call John McCain on his claim that he knows how to win wars? Wes Clarke, to my knowledge, is the ONLY viable Democrat that can say he won a war and say it with the scars from bullet wounds he suffered in Vietnam.
John McCain may have suffered in Vietnam, but he has NEVER fought in a successful war and damn sure never lead a successful war effort.

John McCain's miliary service, not his Senate Career, is his ONLY selling point. Despite the good press of his over seas trip, Senator Obama still has not crossed that hurdle. I don't see any other trump card for John McCain's military exeperience, with one exception...Colin Powell.

You all involved in voter registration-- just curious to hear any updates, how things are going in general.

A bunch of us here out west have been working heavily to recruit Black and Latino voters, as have our counterparts on the East Coast, but I have to admit that the results thus far have been very disappointing.

The Republicans, jerks that they are, have introduced all kinds of Jim Crow-redux regulations to make it more difficult for minorities to vote. Even worse is that too many eligible minority voters don't seem to understand how important this is!

Nevada and Colorado in particular are critical states, but I'd say that close to 40% of the African-Americans we've spoken to still don't plan to vote!!!

And in Virginia, it's almost 45%-- despite the fact that Obama is in contention to beat McCain in Virginia! The state of Virginia will be a Blue State if we can increase Black voter registration and turnout!

People, we've gotta turn on the afterburner here! The one single action that will yield us the biggest dividends-- electing Barack Obama, and gaining Democratic seats in Congress-- is registering Black and Latino voters and encouraging minority voter turnout. Yet we're way behind on that, and it's shameful considering the historic nature of this race!

EVERYBODY PLEASE VOLUNTEER HOWEVER YOU CAN ON THIS! We've gotta get minority voters registered throughout the country, and ensure that they vote on Election Day!

Not sure why you are talking about Haiti, Celia Cruz was Cuban. Did I miss some part of the conversation?

Opinions about colonized and enslaved peoples over time, evolve as a tool and function of systemic oppression. Therefore Celia, being Cuban, knew what Spanish Colonialism looked like and how it existed in Cuba and consequently how people of a darker hue on the island received ill treatment. Make no mistake though that the American context of slavery is uniquely American. And let's not for one second believe that colonial mentalities no longer exist in Cuba, Haiti, and the United States- especially manifested with standards of beauty and desirability that is more white than black. (hair weaves, contact lens, perms...)

That said, Celia Cruz being Black and being Cuban experienced two realities in the United States (three if you count her immigrant status.) Those realities of being Black and Cuban at the same time offered a complex and ill understood perspective of Afro Latino identity.

Many, not all, Black people do not accept this reality. For many Americans you are either Black or White, for many Latinos that model doesn't fit out history since our families embody a spectrum. No one drop in Cuba. In fact many Latinos who arrive today don't identify as Latino- as there is not such category in their country and the concept of Latino as racial group wasn't created until the 80s. So why would I get mad at them not calling themselves Latino since its a made up category to begin with... same as Black and White.

I'm starting to see the "racial issue" is yours and not Celia's. Not sure what to say about your anectodal reality has been since it is very far removed from anything I have ever experienced, witnessed, or studied. True Colorism does exist and we discussed is a byproduct of colonialism and slavery. So why are you holding Celia Cruz to a higher standard than we would say Wendy Williams (blonde weave, contact lens etc)

The larger point is that in the United States many people assume that because you are Black it ALSO means you are African American. MANY Black people in the United States do not identify with being African American because they are not. So politically, these Latinos experienced difficulty with African Americans who felt they should not identify with being culturally Latino if they were also "racially" Black. So there were/ are lots of Black people who believe they are experts in race who believe Black Latinos are trying to be something they are not... when in reality you should stop acting like some colonizer by telling people who they are and how they should act.

It's sad to have closed minds. It's more beneficial to individuals to be curious than to be judgemental. but america is very insular in a way. We don't necessarily have awareness of other people or cultures except in the most superficial ways. One reason why I don't want to change school districts is because my district is so beautifully diverse. Its going to be highly important to have a global mentality and those who don't can relegate themselves to the permanent underclass.

If one wants to forge alliances with the Black diapora, be open to learning about their specific cultures. Don't judge. Be friendly. Be a good ambassador for whatever group you identify with. One of my greatest joys has been to meet people from every corner of the earth. We have more in common than not.

Haiti came up because I used it as an example how older blacks from the Carribean have stereotypical views of African-Americans. Your comment above is well-taken. I forgot to mention that Celia Cruz was Cuban but her stance with respect to black Americans jibes with my statement above.

You need to spend some time reading and hopefully you will find that historically, American history is intertwined with Haitian history, and as the first free black republic in the western hemisphere, Haiti is STILL paying for having the audacity to challenge French colonialism. The Lousiana purchase was prompted by the Haitian revolution, Haitians fought in the American revolutionary war (in fact, if you ever travel to Savannah, GA there is a statue honoring Haitians who fought in a bloody battle in 1979).

Well what do expect? A lot of blacks from the islands, specifically Celia Cruz's generation, tend hold stereotypical views of African-Americans. Being of Haitian descent, I can tell you from first hand experience how older Haitians hold those views. Thankfully, that's beginning to change. I also live in Miami.

you know what guys this is whole too late meme is getting tiresome. if Obama had responded orginally then for the past what 2 weeks, all we would have gotten is back to back attack ads, and lets be honest. What makes Obama a "risky" choice to some people is that people claim to not know enough about Obama. Obama unlike Cliton and McCain is a relatively unknown quanitity to some people. If he had spent the past 2 weeks countering attack ads, what would the people who consider his unknown have discoverd about Obama. The answer NOTHING! Unlike McCain or Clinton Obama does not have the luxury to just run a counterattack campaign. He has to let those American who are looking for a reason to vote for him than the fact that yes we like him, and the way to do that is not by running a negative non-substantive campaign, one in which all Obama does is counterpunch negative ads all the time. While McCain has been running negative ads, what has Obama been doing, talking about the economy, energy, jobs, etc. He's been giving those voters who wants other reasons to vote for him, exactly what may sway them...policy.

I really think that we sometimes forget that Obama and McCain are trying to reach different audiences. McCain wants to reach the people who are looking for reasons NOT TO VOTE FOR BARACK H OBAMA. Barack wants to reach the people who are looking for reasons to VOTER FOR BARACK OBAMA, or even AGAINST GWB.

I really think that should be the eyes by which we view this campaign. Because conservative will ultimately vote against Obama by voting for McCain (or hopefuly Barr), and Liberals will untimately vote for Obama or against Bush. So I think it's really about who can get out the most of the middle of the road voters.

Obama will not win the people who aren't even contemplating voting for him, but he has a good chance of winning those who are.

Bill Clinton got his funky on last week by giving that funky interview and acting like a scorned lover.

Howard Wolfson is getting his funky on by claiming if Edwards had been exposed earlier, Hillary would have won Iowa. But according to Billary Inc., Iowa is one of those states that don't count and didn't matter, so why are they sweating Iowa so hard now? Just like they sweated Bill Richardson like TMZ sweated Britney, but when he ran to the Obama side, Bill Richardson just doesn't matter? Not to mention that 2 out of 3 Iowans did not want Hillary up in there!

As a Latina, specifically Puerto Rican, I know many of us have received "grief" from African Americans who presuppose we identify with the American cultural narrative instead of one of the Diaspora. In this assertion- we expect all Blacks to love American Southern food and forget that is not representative of other cultures in the Caribbean. So many Afro Latinos would identify with their culture (Cuban, Puerto Rican, Bajan, etc) and not their American racialized identity in a way that many African Americans hold to be the "correct way to express oneself" or show "Black pride."

Sometimes we default to uniquely American tendencies- which is dichotomous and limiting in our capacity to honor multiple cultural experiences, build our organizing networks, etc..

Over at DKOS, some people just can't be satisfied. Some of them are disatisfied with the ad.

Here's what I posted over there:

Seriously some people just can't be satisfied. This ad is too nasty (as if) or this ad is not hard enough. Barack Obama is trying to win the presidency of the USA, not the president of DKOS.

The purpose of the Obama campaign isn't to play puppet to all the wrongs that have been done to Democrats. Obama is not our personal avenger. He has to win all Americans. He can't just make his whole campaign about avenging Democrats hurt feeling from the past 2 elections.

I really think that many of us are pushing our revenge fantasy onto the Obama campaign. I'm sorry, if the Obama campaign becomes all about "Repub done us wrong, so let's cut off their balls" we will lose...period.

This is not an issue of policy here. So yes I think we should be holding Obama's feet to the fire about his policy decisions (FISA, drilling, or whatever), but if you truly voted for Obama, and not just against Clinton or anyone else, then trust the man to at least run his campaign message the way that see fit. They have internal polling, we do not. We are just running on emotions which is fine, but not if you're running a campaign (for an example of letting emotions rule your campaign see Clinton, H)

If Obama runs the dkos campaign, we would be satisfied, but the the 50% of the country would not, and we would lose.

Let Obama control his message and strategy and we should continue to volunteer, donate, and on Nov 4 GOTV. I don't know about ya'll, but I want to win.

I see this in much the same way as Ben Smith at Politico.

The Obama team as in the primary waited until it was universally established that McCain was gonna go negative and keep going negative. So if/when Obama responded, it would not be said that Obama was the first going negative. I bet that once the Obama campaign saw that McCain was gonna go negative during the Olympics that it was time to bring out the guns.

The bad thing for McCain is that because of the Olympics, most of the political show will be drowned out. So his "rebuttal" ad will not be getting as much play as before.

I think this ad is great, and probably signifies that the Obama campaign are getting ready to take the gloves off.

Barack may simply have planned to attack McCain during his vacation regardless of McCain's actions.

Just a thought.
