Military donations favor Obama over McCain

WASHINGTON (AP) - John McCain may be the one with the lauded military record, but according to a nonpartisan group, Barack Obama is the one raking in more cash from military donors.

A Center for Responsive Politics report says Obama has gotten more donations of at least $200 from members of the military than McCain. Donations coming from troops serving abroad are even more lopsided in Obama's favor -- he's outraised McCain 6-1 there.

McCain's campaign says he's been "endorsed by more retired admirals and generals than Barack Obama has military donors."

They also expect to win the military vote in November, arguing troops overseas "are too busy" defending the country to donate money.

NYT: McCain demonstrates leadership while Obama vacations

" For the last several days, Senator Barack Obama has seemed to fade from the scene while on his secluded vacation here, as his opponent, Senator John McCain, has seized nearly every opportunity to display his foreign policy credentials on the dominant issue of the week: the conflict between Russia and Georgia.

Only once, at the beginning of the week, did Mr. Obama discuss the fighting in public, when he emerged from his beachfront rental home to condemn Russia’s escalation, in a way that seemed timed for the evening television news. He took no questions whose answers might demonstrate command of the issue.

Mr. McCain and his surrogates, however, have discussed the situation nearly every day on the campaign trail, often taking a hard line against Russia to the point of his declaring the other day, “We are all Georgians.”

It is as if the candidates’ images have been reversed within a matter of a few weeks. When Mr. Obama was overseas last month, Mr. McCain’s foreign policy bona fides seemed diminished, if only because he could not attract the news media attention received by Mr. Obama, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. Now, Mr. Obama’s voice seems muted at a time when much of the world has been worriedly watching the conflict."

McCain spent the week leading the American response in a real way, forcing the White House to catch up. Obama spent the week … body surfing and golfing. For a candidate who already has a confidence deficit on national security and foreign policy among voters, Obama seems strangely disengaged on what is the most crititcal and emergent foreign-policy issue of the campaign. He has taken a strangely passive path, and the contradictory statements by his surrogates have made Obama seem even more vacillating than usual.

Most interestingly, the media has finally started to notice. Michael Falcone’s article acknowledges McCain’s superior performance, an acknowledgment that finds its basis in McCain’s experiential advantage. The media has flocked to McCain for answers on a genuine foreign-policy issue, and more or less abandoned Obama and his team. He has become almost irrelevant in the Georgian crisis, made so by his own abandonment of the field.

Absent any discernable strategy from his manager and strategists, Senator Obama should start listening to Andrew Sullilvan. He warned that his Berlin speech would create an opening for McCain to exploit. Actually, he didn't have to warn him; the stars practically aligned to form the message, "don't do it; it's too much!" Unfortunately, Andrew Sullivan nor the stars have the Senator's ears, only the idiots who thought it was a good idea to afix a presidential seal on his lecturn.

Since then, that opening has only widened, mostly because of the campaign's failure to exploit any of McCain's numerous gaffes or mistakes or take any chances. And all the while doing NOTHING effectual, David Plouffe assures us that they have a plan. It must be top, top secret plan b/c there is NO evidence of one to be found anywhere. Thus far, we're witnessesing a purely reactionary and cautionary campaign that has no consistent message or discernable strategy. What does it remind me of? Oh, I remember...Hillary Clinton's campaign pre-NH.

Well, she's at least learned from her mistakes, and is now mounting a come-back via what is supposed to be Obama's convention.

John McCain is right, Senator Obama is like a celebrity, but certainly not for the dishonest and petty reasons John McCain cites, but rather for one common trait: the people surrounding him, the supposed political experts, are obviously telling him what they want him to hear rather than what he needs to hear. If I had a face-to-face encounter with the Senator, I would. I would tell him, "you're losing, Senator!" It's that simple. "You're losing!"

As much as I want to convince myself (and others) that the daily tracking polls are unreliable, on one is paying attention right now or that the mounting alarm coming from Democratic circles is typical Democratic hysterionics, I know the signs of a faltering campaign. We've seen it too many times to dismiss as insignificant. Hillary Clinton sees them too. She knows he's failed to do the one essential thing he needed to: make her unnecessary. In fact, his campaign has succeeded in making her more necessary than even she probably ever imagined.

The overly cautious and largely reactionary campaign that they have operated in the last two months has made Hillary Clinton an absolute necessity for any chance at winning. So, just get the shit over with and put her on the ticket!

I am worried about the campaign especially since his communications team is lacking but there's no need for this kind of reaction. The daily tracking polls have bee all over the place. Two days ago he was six points ahead in the Gallup Tracking Poll and now he is tied with McCain. In the Rasmussen tracking poll Obama was one point behind McCain and now two points ahead. I am not saying we should not worry but we should calm down.

If this is the "3 am" moment the pundits are trying to make it out to be, how does harping on McCain's staff's prior employment help to show what Obama thinks of the actual situation?

Here are some other important things to regard, while looking at this conflict:

1. Conditions have been tense as far back as July 4, 2008. In an article on ABC News dated 7/4/2008

"Georgia's breaakaway republic of South Ossetia on Friday (7/3/08) mobolized reservist and threatened to use heavy weapons against Georgian forces after two people were killed in heavy exchanges of fire overnight.
Neither Tbilisi nor the separatist admitted violating the ceasefire on one another."
Quoting the rebel region's officials, Russia's Vesti-24 channel said Georgia had started bombarding the separatist capital Tsknvali with mortar shells at about midnight on Thursday. "Then intensive gunfire followed, it reported.
The channel ran video footage of wounded people being operated on in a Tskhinvali hospital.

"This is a well-planned provocation staged by the Georgian side," separatist leader Eduard Kokoity said in a statement broadcast by Vesti-24. "It shows Georgia does not intend to resolve peacefully the conflicts in South Ossetia and Abkahzia."

South Ossetia said it mobilized its reservists after the overnight hostilities, Interfax news agency quoted the region's spokeswoman Irina Gagloyeva as saying.
Georgia's Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions broke away from central rule during wars against Tbilisi during the 1990s. Russia, which has peacekeepers in both unrecognized republics, has provided moral and financial support for the rebels.

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, who wants his ex-Soviet Caucasus state to join NATO and the European Union, sees the re-integration of of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as a top priority.

"We call on the Georgian side to see reason and pull out their forces," Kokoity said. " Otherwise, we will take a decision to introduce heavy machinery and offensive weapons to terminate all the units illegally deployed in the conflict zone."

Tbilisi said it did not believe Kokoity's threats would materialize.

"This is absolutely inadmissable. If this happens, this will be a violation of all existing (ceasefire)agreements," said Shota Utiasshvili, as official in the Georgian Interior Ministry.

2. As we know, Randy Scheuneman was a lobbyist for Georgia as recently as May of 2008, and has lobbied John McCain to sponsor legislation supporting Georgia's claim over South Ossetia.

3. The United States and Georgian troops began three weeks of training at the Vaziani militay base near the Georgian capital on July 15, 2008. The Russians, started their own military exercise, though claiming it was not in response to the Georgian exercise. In light of the recent tensions between South Ossetia and Georgia, Russia may have regarded these military exercises to be Georgia's positoning to go in and take back South Ossetia forcefully.

Georgia's main priority is to re-integrate Abkhazia and South Ossetia in order to become part of NATO. President Bush, in April of this year, wanted to see if there was a way to fast-track Georgia's admission into NATO.

Since the capital of Tshinvali was under bombardment back on July 3, it is safe to say Georgia was engaging with fire inside South Ossetia.

I want to update with more information that Georgia led this conflict ---

In an article ,on Fox News online,dated 8/08/08 the first day this conflict began to gain widespread international attention, the following was stated:
"...Georgian troops entered the breakaway province in an attempt to crush separatist seeking to control the capital Tshinvali" ( again, keep in mind tension and fighting had been occuring since early July). During those attacks over 12 Russian peacekeepers were killed and 30 were said to be wounded in addition to many civilian deaths . Georgia's President Mikhail Saakashvili said on the same day that Georgian troops now controlled "a large part of South Ossetia" and "have liberated" Tskhinvali.
It looks clearly like Georgia launched this offensive---and Russia reacted.

Mikhail Gorbechev was on Nightline last night and blasted Georgia & blamed them for starting it. also mentioned was the fact that Colin Powell has been advising Georgia for years to be prudent, but they have not listened.

The Myth of the Clinton Surplus

Time and time again, anyone reading the mainstream news or reading articles on the Internet will read the claim that President Clinton not only balanced the budget, but had a surplus. This is then used as an argument to further highlight the fiscal irresponsibility of the federal government under the Bush administration.

The claim is generally made that Clinton had a surplus of $69 billion in FY1998, $123 billion in FY1999 and $230 billion in FY2000 . In that same link, Clinton claimed that the national debt had been reduced by $360 billion in the last three years, presumably FY1998, FY1999, and FY2000--though, interestingly, $360 billion is not the sum of the alleged surpluses of the three years in question ($69B + $123B + $230B = $422B, not $360B).

While not defending the increase of the federal debt under President Bush, it is aggravating seeing Clinton's record promoted as having generated a surplus. It never happened. There was never a surplus and the cold hard facts support that position. In fact, far from a $360 billion reduction in the national debt in FY1998-FY2000, there was an increase of $281 billion.

Verifying this is as simple as accessing the U.S. Treasury website where the national debt is updated daily and a history of the debt since January 1993 can be obtained. Considering the government's fiscal year ends on the last day of September each year, and considering Clinton's budget proposal in 1993 took effect in October 1993 and concluded September 1994 (FY1994), here's the national debt at the end of each year of Clinton Budgets:

As can clearly be seen, in no year did the national debt go down, nor did Clinton leave President Bush with a budget surplus that Bush subsequently turned into a deficit. Yes, the budget was almost balanced in FY2000 (ending in September 2000 with a deficit of "only" $17.9 billion), but it never reached zero--let alone a positive number. And Clinton's last budget proposal for FY2001, which ended in September 2001, generated a $133.29 billion deficit. The growing deficits started in the year of the last Clinton budget, not in the first year of the Bush administration.

Keep in mind that President Bush took office in January 2001 and his first budget took effect October 1, 2001 for the year ending September 30, 2002 (FY2002). So the $133.29 billion deficit in the year ending September 2001 was Clinton's. Granted, Bush supported a tax refund where taxpayers received checks in 2001. However, the total amount refunded to taxpayers was $38 billion . So even if we assume that $38 billion of the FY2001 deficit was due to Bush's tax refunds which were not part of Clinton's last budget, that still means that Clinton's last budget produced a deficit of 133.29 - 38 = $95.29 billion.

Clinton clearly did not achieve a surplus and he didn't leave President Bush with a surplus.

So why do they said he had a surplus?

As is usually the case in claims such as this, it has to do with Washington doublespeak and political smoke and mirrors.
