Dan Steinberg did an "Athletes and Obama" comparative list for WAPO in June:

It's been almost six months since I compiled very incomplete lists of which presidential candidates a bunch of athletes, owners and sports officials were supporting. Now that we've got nominees, figure I should update.

Since then, the "famous athletes supporting Obama" trend has clearly been further explored, with the Philly Inquirer, for example, getting lots of "we love Obama" tales from Philly athletes. We've seen an Obama column in ESPN The Mag, the Miami Herald talking to several Miami athletes about Obama and Tiki Barber expounding on the same subject:

I don't think there are many people who have as proven a cultural impact as Oprah- there's not really a comparable surrogate, is there? I mean, even if LeBron or LaDanian Tomlinson, or Tiger Woods or Michael Jordan came out evangelical for Obama, it couldn't have the same impact. People don't tend to make major lifestyle decisions based on what athletes say. People do buy books they'd otherwise never read, products they'd otherwise never want, attempt diet or health practices they might never otherwise consider (she got my mom meditating!), all based on what Oprah suggests… I don't know -anyone-, black or white, male or female, with that much credibility. And athletes, I think, might be an even harder sell, since even though they're respected on the court or the field for their physical abilities, they're not usually respected for their intellectual prowess.

I've long thought that Lebron James would be an incredibly effective surrogate for Obama in Ohio and probably Indiana as well.
