As a fellow sista in your general age and weight category I can tell you that every time I leave the country i feel like a different person. i am out of the US at this very moment and was checking into a hotel today when a white guy walked past me and said I love you! I had to really check to make sure he wasn't drunk, hell, he might have been but it was pretty early :-) i've been to london twice in the last nine months and had a great time each time. i did see a lot of interracial couples though. i'd tell any sister get a passport, your world will open up and you will feel great anywhere outside the US. no dis to brothers stateside but i get much more love outside of the country. london was good but africa was even better. i always say if you think djimon hounsou is sexy, go to africa, there's a million dudes over there that look just like him. :-) go international my sisters!!!

Yes, they damn well, do... They are mad for just about anything that is totally different from the same old, same old. Especially an American black woman with more than an ounce of brain.

Interlude, the Brits admit they are more class conscious than race conscious – which is why you don't hear a lot about racial incidents here; though there have been some.

The lead professor is Irish and as someone said upthread, they tend to identify with African-descent people because of their historical treatment of their race by the English. Although they seem to get along okay, now, I do tend to see that the class issues are not too far beneath the surface.

england is a fun place, and i love it, too. enjoy!
however, as much as i like it there, it is the most class conscious society i have ever been in…not as racially sensitive as US in many ways, but very class-sensitive. the banning of high fructose corn syrup is what makes the coke and the choc taste better (besides, cadbury is just better choc than hershey, regardless) our soda pop here in the USA is loaded with high fructose corn syrup….i rarely drink it, but always enjoy coke with sugar cane when visiting europe, or mexico or the DR

I would recommend SE Asia, I was in Thailand (Bangkok and Pattaya) and did a stop over in Japan this past December. Tailored clothes made on the cheap…heaven!!

T, I am returning to Britain next summer or fall, depending on the job and financial situation. I think I'll go with a package deal (airfare and hotel with some meals package), so I can really be on vacation. I think I want a package that includes a weekend in Paris, so I can ride the bullet train that gets you from London to Paris in two hours or less.

I hope to do another study abroad course – next destination will either be Southeast Asia or Mexico City.

Ms. Kitty, I felt really impoverished when I converted my dollars for sterling. The pound is equal to 2.25 american dollars. Almost made me convert to euros, except the UK is the last holdout in the European Union that is refusing to convert from the pound to the Euro. Right now, they can rip off more people with the pound than the euro. And the American dollar is equvilant to the Mexican peso – totally worthless.

They pay 8.00 a gallon for gas, too. No wonder I haven't seen an SUV since I left the states – while they're not banned here, no one's breaking their neck to get a Hummer, either.

Shazza, I'm with your husband on the chocolate. After having Cadbury's on Sunday, I'm spoiled on the chocolate, and would probably spit out Hershey's chocolate.

Hearts and Flowers told me that they make their chocolates without the high fructose corn syrup here. I think it's been banned. All I will say is that I'm "regular" if you get my meaning, and I've been drinking milk without any lactose problems whatsoever. I know most people complain about college dorm food, but here at Oxford, we get waiter service, and the food is cooked to order. When they serve lunch, you get two courses (entree and dessert). Today's dessert was a chocolate "pudding" with warm toffee sauce. "Pudding" is what we'd call "cake" back home, but it was warm, tasty and yeah, most of us went to sleep in class afterwards, LOL.

I am enjoying myself, but I'm working hard, too. We have book reviews, papers and presentations we do in class in the mornings, so it's not all fun. We're in class from 9-to-3, and lunch break from 12:30-1:30. You can't be late or miss class because your grade gets docked. These Oxford professors don't play!

Thanks for the tips - the day trip to Brighton sounds like a deal; but one of the instructors told me about other deals they are having for the summer study students visiting from the states, so I'll keep you posted.

The pub lunch I had yesterday was the bomb - traditional fish and chips and the food wasn't greasy, either. Today, I saw KFC, Mickey D's and BK all within 100 feet of one another. I thought that is sooo wrong, but then I was told to check them out because they cook the food healthier here, and I've promised I'd check out the Colonel later this week.

But food always taste better when you're not paying for it. The pub lunch yesterday was courtesy of Mansfield College (the name of the school where I'm studying here at Oxford). LOL
