I watched both – eh. I was an actress for 7 years. You have no idea how brutal Hollywood is and how they subvert so many wonderful projects that would have wide appeal simply because they refuse to support them. Anytime you want to display the worst stereotypes though they'll eat it up. Both of those movies were extremely problematic and narrow-minded. Last King was more about the white doctor if anything and Ray was very slick and lacked a grittiness that would've made it more realistic. Part of the problem is the writing sucks for women in general and especially if it's a role for a woman of color. When there was a social shift in the 70's and a lot of white 'guilt' some of them at least took the time to craft a more dynamic character. Speaking of – she's older but I'd pick Cicely Tyson was the embodiment of class and acting chops with interesting roles. Now the theme is to replace Black actors with white actors be it in blackface or by changing the back story.
These women weren't going to be wealthy from acting and they felt the responsibility of 'representing' the race whether that was right or wrong. We don't have a “Sounder” or “Mahogany” or even “The Wiz”. And today everyone is trying to brand themselves and sell products.

Oooh. I kinda see it. We could be wrong though, but she has her cosmetics contract and is one of the few Black actresses with the 'in' with the fashionista crowd. She does a lot of red carpet events wearing couture. She's absolutely tiny to be able to fit into sample sizes. She's not making the bulk of her money from acting. That Trohpy Wife sounds like a nice gig though if I could have the house in London – ha!

This BOY is TENACIOUS! But to what end? Was he promised something by billary????

I didn't see the Matrix, but your description of that “taste” feels right in summing up the feminist opposition to O. O's mystique is obviously something good..Maybe they thought they were the most beautiful and desirable of all women. Maybe they thought we envied their lives and relationships.

I'm really late to the convo but just wanted to say that I love Diahann Carroll and that we share birthdays (July 17th). I think back then there was much purpose in the proper representation of Black women…alot of that is lost in today's society and without control over the business side of the industry, it appears hopeless.

ITA! I also think it has to do with them buying into the erroneous belief that once a black man succeeds, he chooses a non-black (preferably white) or a Eurocentric looking sista SO. They can't get over that this biracial man LOVES and is IN LOVE with an identifiably black woman!

I don't see your point. If the Iraqi people and government have already expressed an intent and desire to govern themselves, without US presence, but have acknowledged that it will take time to make a transition–2010 possibly, then how is that really far off from Obama's plan. He has said in several different ways that he will not be reckless in withdrawing the troops and will listen to the commanders on the ground for tactical advice. He also admitted that there would be false starts and delays. So for you to paraphrase his repeated position for the last eighteen months as “screw em'” is disingenuous at best.
The only people who consider Obama's position today as a change are those that haven't been paying attention.

What I-and probably most conservatives-would consider a change is the fact that Obama is now saying that we have to win the war in Iraq. Not that we “could” win…that we don't have a choice BUT to.
To us, Obama's withdrawal plan equated to surrender (and I put that in past tense cause I don't know what the hell the message will be now, and I've had no luck in coming up with one).

I was just about five or so when Julia came onto TV. I loved her so much that I had a Julia doll and I wanted to be a nurse just like her. My Irish mother was pretty happy that I chose to identify with a woman of color. I think she was my first role model. How happy I was to see her picture here today.

I have to give Nichelle Nichols, the original Lt. Uhuru on “Star Trek” her props. She's in Diahann Carroll's generation, and she's fabulous as well. I enjoy her on “Heroes,” and her personal story is interesting as well.
Among younger actresses, I really like Jurnee Smollett although she's got a way to go before she can claim timeless. I hope she gets the work she deserves.
