Obama brought up race now because the press, led by Dana Milbank of the Washington Post, has accused him of being presumptuous.

Obama is also presumptuous to assume that those who will not vote for him are racist.

Scoff and laugh, but this will reflect poorly on Obama with undecided white voters.

It's not even quite August yet and he's still ahead in the polls, but Barack Obama has played the race card, claiming that he expects Republicans to inject race into the campaign. In Missouri, he told a crowd:

Nobody [ed: nobody?] thinks that Bush and McCain have a real answer to the challenges we face. So what they're going to try to do is make you scared of me. You know, 'he's not patriotic enough, he's got a funny name,' you know, 'he doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills."

The Obama campaign denied that the comment about "presidents on the dollar bills" was a reference to race. It claimed that Obama was referring to the fact that "he didn't get here after spending decades in Washington." But, of course, neither did the presidents on the dollar bills (Washington, Jackson, Lincoln, Grant). Thus, the campaign's spin does not pass the straight face test.

Moreover, a month ago, Obama explicitly claimed, without evidence, that the Republicans will attack him on racial grounds:

The choice is clear. Most of all we can choose between hope and fear. It is going to be very difficult for Republicans to run on their stewardship of the economy or their outstanding foreign policy. We know what kind of campaign they're going to run. They're going to try to make you afraid. They're going to try to make you afraid of me. He's young and inexperienced and he's got a funny name. And did I mention he's black?

It seems clear, therefore, that the race card has become a permanent part of Obama's hand, a wild card to be played whenever the spirit, or the circumstances, so moves him

What does Obama's latest play tell us about the current circumstances? I think it tells us that, despite Obama's presidential preening, he senses he may be in trouble. The "world tour" bounce appears to have been a short-hop only, and his pretentiousness and arrogance are beginning to grate even on some in the MSM. The McCain campaign is ridiculing Obama as a celebrity and little more. There's enough truth in this suggestion to make the candidate uncomfortable. He doesn't feel he can ignore the attack, but he also cannot respond with "I am too a man of substance who deserves my celebrity." Hence the whining; hence the race card.

Shelby Steele has divided African-American public figures into two categories: bargainers and challengers. Bargainers state, in effect, “I will presume that you're not a racist and by loving me you'll show that my presumption is correct.” Challengers say, in effect, that whites are racist until they prove otherwise by conferring tangible benefits on them. Oprah is a bargainer; so was Louis Armstrong. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are challengers.

Barack Obama made his political breakthrough as a bargainer. By constantly referring to the national yearning (including, he said, by many Republicans) to "come together" as blacks and whites, Obama presumed we are not racists. His reward was an almost magical appeal to broad portions of the electorate.

However, Steele (who believes that bargainers are masking their real, more subtle, view of whites) predicted that Obama would not be able to maintain his bargainer status. That prophesy began to come true when the tapes of Rev. Wright surfaced. Now, as Obama feels the heat of the campaign, he continues his transformation to challenger. In Steele's terms, he no longer offers us the assurances, required of bargainers, that he knows we’re not racists; we now have to prove it to him. Having issued this challenge, Obama can no longer receive our unconditional love.

Of course, Obama doesn't need our unconditional love; he just needs 50 percent plus one of the vote. Straining to get to that number, his mask is coming off, probably to his detriment.

After browsing through the comments in this thread I really need to post my latest diary about how this meme about Obama being the one to play the race card came from. I also need to add the clip from tonight's "Countdown" where Keith O. brought up the fact that Obama said the same thing over a month ago and McCain didn't go all bats&!t crazy about it like he's doing today. The ad gave us an uneasy feeling that the McCain campaign was starting up the same sort of racially tinged attack on Mr. Obama that Republican operatives, some of whom work for Mr. McCain now, ran against Harold Ford, a black candidate for Senate in Tennessee in 2006. That assault, too, began with videos juxtaposing Mr. Ford with young, white women.

Mr. Obama called Mr. McCain on the ploy, saying, quite rightly, that the Republicans are trying to scare voters by pointing out that he “doesn’t look like all those other Presidents on those dollar bills.’’

But Rick Davis, Mr. McCain’s campaign manager, had a snappy answer. “Barack Obama has played the race card, and he played it from the bottom of the deck,” he said. “It’s divisive, negative, shameful and wrong.’’

The retort was, we must say, not only contemptible, but shrewd. It puts the sin for the racial attack not on those who made it, but on the victim of the attack.

It also — and we wish this were coincidence, but we doubt it — conjurs up another loaded racial image.

The phrase dealing the race card “from the bottom of the deck” entered the national lexicon during the O.J. Simpson saga. Robert Shapiro, one of Mr. Simpson’s lawyers, famously declared of himself, Johnny Cochran and the rest of the Simpson defense team, “Not only did we play the race card, we dealt it from the bottom of the deck.”

It was utterly predictable that Obama would seek to portray McCain and Republicans as racist in the general election. In fact, it was predicted by many back in the Spring. Why does he do this? Because Obama's historic narrative is the best thing going for his campaign. Why else would he start his Iowa Caucus victory celebration speech with: "They told us this day would never come". Why else would he repeatedly channel Dr. King with his "from the cornfields of Iowa to the hills of Appalachia" rhetoric? Obama's prime qualification for president is his race, and it is his best calling card. Obama is the one who brings up his race, like he did in Berlin. While he claims to be 'postracial' his desire to portray his opponents as racist, in order to gain political advantage is unseemly, infalmatory and it will backfire.

I am positive this is at the General Conference of The A.M.E. Church in St. Louis earlier this month. Bishop Vashti McKenzie (in glasses) is at about 10 o'clock. She was the first woman elected A.M.E. Bishop. She is a Delta and was their chaplain. At about 1 o'clock behind Sen. Obama is Bishop John Hurst Adams.

When my sons were about 8 and 10, Bishop Adams was their favorite preacher because he gave short funny sermons when he visited and always sang "My hope is built on nothing less..." with great gusto.

There ia an article in BusinessWeek generally criticsing McCains dishonest ads. IN particular he writs McCain was going to criticise Obama if he did visit the troops or if he didn't.

Honor would include honest criticism. It would not include criticism of either action the opponent takes. "Visiting troops is exploiting troops" or "Not visiting troops is hating troops." Anybody that does this is not honorable.

I will say though. I don't always like the chuckling tone Barack takes when he talks about this stuff. He needs to have a poker face and a stern tone and keep his voice in the lower register..and keep his arms close to his body to stay grounded. On the upside, my sister has $20 coming since I've lost the bet of when McCain was going to go there (I said around Labor Day, sis said early August-ish).

Oh, lets not pay attention to the substantive differences Obama outlined in his stump...lets focus on one, tiny blurb about not looking like other Presidents.

They believe they are gaining in the polls. They are going to pile on.

Remember, they believe they've still got a chance to stop him from becoming the nominee, but they'll need him behind 10 points in the big polls before Denver to realize it.

Make no mistake. That's the goal.

Don't be surprised if that feature documentary bashing moves up its release date if it appears the attacks and the anti-Obama books seem to be moving the needle.

But D isn't there a difference here? Isn't Obama pointing out the obvious, i.e. some people are not comfortable with him as President, because he doesn't look like or have the same background as other Presidents, and therefore his opponents will try to characterize him as foreign, exotic, and make implications about his race? That's a fact. Again, Obama can't win. If he doesn't talk about the obvious historical part of his campaign, but at the same time acknowledge that it may take some time for people to become comfortable with the idea, then I would think he is out of touch.

I think there is a difference. McCain doesn't need to make that same statement about himself because he fits the Presidential mold. White male. But Obama doesn't. And he wouldn't say it about Obama because he would in fact being making a racial argument against Obama.

Well, if he does that, then he does it with the expectation that someone will accuse him of injecting race into the campaign. It'll be hard to do, but give the McCain campaign credit: they haven't brought up Obama as the "black candidate."

My thing is that since he can't win with these kind of statements, he should stop making them. This isn't the first time we've been down this road with Obama. Saying he doesn't have the same background is one thing, but there's only one way to take him saying he doesn't look like any other president.

I'll agree with you with hesitation. I was disappointed to an extent when I heard Obama say that people on the right are going to make him out to be the scary Black guy. I think that is inaccurate. There are race baiters and racists in both the Republican AND Democratic party who have been doing this for awhile now, so he should either acknowledge that fact or move on.

And you are absolutely right on your other point, the McCain campaign hasn't brought up the "Obama is the black candidate" meme. But, stay tuned. if these affirmative action initiatives from Ward Connelly become a hot topic, things could get ugly especially since now McCain is opposed to the initiatives and Obama still supports affirmative action. But on the other hand, I do think the McCain campaign might be making the "Black candidate" argument in an indirect way. See my posts above about this whole "presumption" thing. It's a parallel for racism in 2008--you don't need to be wearing a white sheet at night to be a racist, and you don't need blatant racial attacks to be making a racial argument. It is a very fine line in my mind, so I think that they should ditch this effort. But they won't. Look, I don't want to be paranoid or overreact, but something about their argument is too close to saying that Obama is too "uppity" for his own good and he should know his place.

Now, the "uppity" label bothers me.....because it swings too close to being something racial.

The thing about actual racism is that it has multiple forms, from subtle to overt, and doesn't need to be direct.

People can say very racist stuff in *code* (eg the "he's too presumptuous" thing) and then if anyone names it as what it actually they can just deny it because it's coded.

It does when McCain can have weekly radio addresses as if he's president, he can give a speech talking about how the world will be after his first term, he can visit foreign nations without comment.

But they want to push presumption on Obama? McCain is the pot calling the kettle black and in this case he's done more to be labeled presumptuous IMHO than Obama.

In my book, McCain saying how the world will be in 2013 carries no more weight than Obama's "this is the moment where....." line. They're both posturing.

McCain has had his moments of presumption (full disclosure)....but he has no reason to be presumptive.

So why is this all we hear from the media, from McCain? If Obama isn't doing anything beyond normal posturing or astute political maneuvering why is he presumptuous? Why does McCain use the line of attack?

Because it works on Obama. Why does it work on him? Experience? Not likely given Clinton before him. How about age? Perhaps. How about race? Perhaps. Hence many people's problem.

McCain's having some strategy/tactics issues at the moment.

You know what I think the whole presumption thing really stems from? The media putting it in people's head that there was/is no possible way that the GOP would keep the White House. Trust, if this was Obama vs. Cheney, we could all be singing "All Hail the Power of Obama's Name," and no one would give a shit about presumption.

But a funny thing's happened: this race has turned out to be a lot closer than anyone really expected. It's not a clear blowout for either candidate. So now, things that would look normal-or even justified-under these same circumstances look presumptious.

Except McCain has been pushing this line for awhile. I'm not going to give the media a pass, but the GOP is not an innocent bystander.

I think your argument would be true if McCain wasn't making foolish statements to support this whole "presumption" theme.

1) McCain has accused Obama of presumption for setting up a presidential transition team. The problem, several past candidates and Presidents have done the EXACT same thing. And as experts have pointed out, it is a smart move. 2) McCain teases Obama for going overseas and giving political speeches in foreign country. The problem, McCain did the EXACT same thing. The only difference was he didn't coordinate his trip with the press (which as members of the press pointed out was a foolish move, and a logistical nightmare), and there isn't the same level of excitement around his campaign that there is around Obama's so he doesn't get the same response. 3) McCain accuses Obama of making a premature victory lap. The problem, as far back as May, there were ads where McCain calls himself "President McCain," and he continues to do so. He makes a weekly radio address just like, wait for it, the current President. I could go on.

My whole point is, this whole theme is completely silly in light of the fact that the McCain campaign has been doing comparable things as they apply to be President, but when Obama does something it must be because his is arrogant or presumptuous. So either they are in fact playing the race card in a back handed way, or they are just complete fools that don't have anything better to offer on behalf their candidate. Both options leave much to be desired.

And of course Obama talks about being Black. People ask him about it, there have been articles, polls, and surveys about it. He cannot ignore it. It is always there.

BUT, if they continue this whole Obama is "presumptuous" because he does X,Y, and Z, without anyone realizing they have also been doing X,Y, and Z, they don't need to make a direct racial statement. The implication is there.

And there is a difference between presumption and racism. My whole point is, would they be making these same arguments if Obama were white? Maybe they would, and I will give them the benefit of the doubt on that. But since there arguments are based on foolishness, it makes me more suspect.

My understanding is that the presumption label comes from his actions, not from his race.

That candidate proclaimed that the Iraq and Afghanistan wars would be won, and even went as far as saying there would not be another major terrorist attack on America, amongst other ambitious proclamations. This speech was given in May 2008 by none other than John McCain!!! What amazes me is that the MSM did not look at this as being "presumptuous "or constantly use this as the catch-phrase of the day as we have seen with Barack Obama. Senator Obama will always be held to ahigher standard for what he and any supporters have to say while McClueless continues to get a pass!!!

What do you think about the House's resolution to condemn slavery and Jim Crow? It was sponsored by Rep. Cohen (D-TN). He is white, but represents majority black Memphis, TN (formerly Harold Ford, Jr.'s district). While I appreciate the effort, I recognize this was partly about politics. He faces a tough primary challenge, but this resolution should play well with his constituents.

I think that it is a start and great thing for the historical record. Yes... I think that the resolution was motivated by party politics but it also was something that was long overdue.
