3. Then, Tavis began to TALK DOWN to his Black audience. Jesse Jackson THINKS that Obama disrespected Black folk? He didn't listen to the last 6 months of Tavis Smiley commentaries on the TJMS. It got more and more strident, his condescention towards the Black audience of the TJMS.

4. His disrespecting Michelle Obama and refusing to accept her appearance at the SOTBU. And then LYING about it.

And, I bet for every 100 words he says about Obama, there'll be 2 about McSame.

Andrea Mitchell was on Chris Matthew's a few moments ago, and let me tell you she was LIVID. She could barely contain her pissivity. Going on about the press not having access to Obama, how the interviews given thus far are not legit, and how she has never seen such a thing. It was really funny actually.

There was mention of (I think of Shuster's show) that a New Yorker magazine reporter magazine was left off Obama's plane due to limited capacity. Ha.

Dr. Larry Hunter: Lifelong Conservative Republican Economist Supports Senator Obama

I’m a lifelong Republican - a supply-side conservative. I worked in the Reagan White House. I was the chief economist at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for five years. In 1994, I helped write the Republican Contract with America. I served on Bob Dole’s presidential campaign team and was chief economist for Jack Kemp’s Empower America.

This November, I’m voting for Barack Obama.

When I first made this decision, many colleagues were shocked. How could I support a candidate with a domestic policy platform that’s antithetical to almost everything I believe in?

The answer is simple: Unjustified war and unconstitutional abridgment of individual rights vs. ill-conceived tax and economic policies - this is the difference between venial and mortal sins.

Taxes, economic policy and health care reform matter, of course. But how we extract ourselves from the bloody boondoggle in Iraq, how we avoid getting into a war with Iran and how we preserve our individual rights while dealing with real foreign threats - these are of greater importance.
John McCain would continue the Bush administration’s commitment to interventionism and constitutional overreach. Obama promises a humbler engagement with our allies, while promising retaliation against any enemy who dares attack us. That’s what conservatism used to mean - and it’s what George W. Bush promised as a candidate.

Plus, when it comes to domestic issues, I don’t take Obama at his word. That may sound cynical. But the fact that he says just about all the wrong things on domestic issues doesn’t bother me as much as it once would have. After all, the Republicans said all the right things - fiscal responsibility, spending restraint - and it didn’t mean a thing. It is a sad commentary on American politics today, but it’s taken as a given that politicians, all of them, must pander, obfuscate and prevaricate.

Besides, I suspect Obama is more free-market friendly than he lets on. He taught at the University of Chicago, a hotbed of right-of-center thought. His economic advisers, notably Austan Goolsbee, recognize that ordinary citizens stand to gain more from open markets than from government meddling. That’s got to rub off.

When it comes to health care, I am hoping Obama quietly recognizes that a crusade against pharmaceutical companies would result in the opposite of any intended effect. And in any event, McCain’s plans in this area are deeply problematic, too. Take drug re-importation. McCain (like Obama) says he’s perfectly comfortable with this ill-conceived scheme, which would drive research and development dollars away from the next generation of miracle cures.

But overall, based on his embrace of centrist advisers and policies, it seems likely that Obama will turn out to be in the mold of John Kennedy - who was fond of noting that “a rising tide lifts all boats.” Over the last few decades, economic growth has made Americans at every income level better off. For all his borderline pessimistic rhetoric, Obama knows this. And I believe he is savvy enough to realize that the real threat to middle-class families and the poor - an economic undertow that drags everyone down - cannot be counteracted by an activist government.

Or maybe not. But here’s the thing: Even if my hopes on domestic policy are dashed and Obama reveals himself as an unreconstructed, dyed-in-the-wool, big-government liberal, I’m still voting for him.

These past eight years, we have spent over a trillion dollars on foreign soil - and lost countless lives - and done what I consider irreparable damage to our Constitution.
If economic damage from well-intentioned but misbegotten Obama economic schemes is the ransom we must pay him to clean up this foreign policy mess, then so be it. It’s not nearly as costly as enduring four more years of what we suffered the last eight years.

Black people cannot be racist. They can be bigoted against whites or other groups but only whites in the United States have institutional power.

Your definition is too limiting for terms that needs distinction when defining. I tend to think of prejudice as an attitude and racism as a belief or ideology that is the basis of the attitude. Racial discrimination is making a choice based on racist ideology. If a person is a racist then he or she believes one race is superior and all others are innately inferior. This ideology influences the expectations that a person has of someone of another race. This, in turn, influences decisions people make like hiring choices, etc. I should note that the argument seems to have moved away from genetics and to culture; like the classic Cosby-ism that if you're poor, post-Cosby's generation, you won't get the social capital (i.e. home-training) necessary to break the cycle of poverty – an echo of William J Wilson’s work.

What's ill is that you seemed to have defined Malcolm based on NOI and a film. You, then, alter your view when someone rebuts your posts. Malcolm said that a person "who stands for nothing will fall for anything." You should consider standing on research and not on caricatures of Blackness.

After watching CNN's first installment of black in America it is clear to me that black is represented by the black male. I posted on this issue.The panel was unfairly divided by gender and I feel that this is a blatant silencing of black woman and a negation of our importance.

Good Morning All,

I just wanted to comment on last night's airing of Black in America on CNN. I think what bothered me in the prior weeks promoting the "documentary" and it's eventual airing was timing, and the venue (CNN).

I could be wrong here, but I felt as it was an attempt to continue to portray Blacks as victims, or whiners. I kept wondering how the constant refrain of "Being Black in America" during repeated promotional commercials translated to those "hard working white voters'", and others. It appears to be an attempt to undermine Obama's attempt to be the post-racial candidate.

The topics discussed are certainly valid, and worthy of discussion. I just have never felt CNN of all media outlets has shown any real concern for our community.

I might do this alot over the next couple of days (lol) , can't help it, but I am going to repeat what Chris Rock said the other night in concert on the topic.

He said something to the effect of "CNN, Tsumani", "CNN, Hurricane Katrinas", etc....

No, you're not wrong. I've been suspicious of the timing all along. I have not seen one segment that describes "being black in America" .

Yep, and Soledad kept pressing that line...scandalizing young black women and men. Those two burly, hairy chested men weren't any better either...reminiscing about times past where pregnant teenage girls disappeared to The South. Women, the carriers of shame. Women need to escape the mantle of shame. We need to escape how shame is used to subjugate us.

The young woman who walks up to a man and says "I want to have your baby." She is brash, selecting sperm consciously, reflecting what her biology does silently. Contrast this with the young woman who said he should "make me his wife": The aggressive vs. submissive woman. TD Jakes is outraged by this. Let him declare war on our biology. Let the mighty TD and the heavenly host command our wombs not to select or reject their seed as it sees fit.

Let the church declare that the tiny cells that communicate with each other, creating the environment that kills sperm, should be sanctioned.

In the race draft, Latinos are willing to give up Soledad O'Brien and take Rosario Dawson.

But Soledad is Afro-cuban and Irish. I'm not sure if that makes her Latino. Does it?

On a shallow note, I just love the name. Sunny O'Brian. As a mix with Mexican and Irish it made me smile. As a journalist, less so.

i would really like to know more about this (no cable...budget cuts LOL) if you find any clips of anything like that, please post. i keep hearing that this is all about what's wrong with black america, which is somehow being co-signed by so-called "credible" press and black intelligentsia. does anyone see this as propoganda that many of us have bought into?

I have always felt that way. We aren't doing anything that other groups of people are doing, there are just less of us so it seems to be this huge problem and we're stupid enough and hate ourselves enough to allow people to put us front for it.

In summer, I practically live on watermelon and collard greens.

I have a theory, not backed up by any nutritionist, but eating lots of watermelon also makes my skin less attractive to mosquitoes, who absolutely love tearing me up.

We've discussed the 52 million June numbers, but (via Eric Kleefeld at TPM), we note Politico's story:

Obama roars with $25M one-day haul
After locking up his party’s presidential nomination, Barack Obama’s fundraising operation came roaring back to life in June, generating more than a million dollars on five days, including a whopping $25 million that came in on the last day of the month.

His one-day haul represents nearly half of his monthly total and more than Republican rival John McCain generated for the entire month. During the month, McCain did not have a single day in which he raised a million dollars.

Overall, Obama raised $54 million for his campaign in June, compared to $22 million for McCain.

All the oxygen is getting sucked up by the overseas trip, but let's not lose sight of the democratizing effect of $68 donations (media reporters, you are so wrong on this. This is what public financing really looks like.) When it mixes with more traditional sources, you get a whole lot of cash.

Gee, I wonder why he opted out of public campaign financing? See, the point isn't whether McCain will be funded. Republican corporate money has no where else to go, and no one wants to waste it on Congress. The point is that Obama will have enough money to not be overwhelmed by GOP corporate dollars, and run the campaign he wants on even terms. That's unheard of.

So, apparently the conventional wisdom is that the clock is ticking on Obama's VP choice.

Apparently the goal is to get it done before the Olympics start. (8/8/8 for all yall not inclined towards NBC or MSNBC)

That makes it two weeks and counting.

I am still backing Sebilius or Kaine but Anybody but Nunn or Clinton will suffice.

Traditionally, the announcement is made shortly before the convention, and this has been the case in all but one instance, in 1968, I believe. All this 'before the Olympics' media talk is just that - talk.

One of many positive things I've observed about Obama is that his word is his bond; he's said repeatedly that neither he nor his campaign will discuss the who, what, when of the VP process, until he introduces his choice.

So corporate media can speculate all they want, but I don't believe we'll know who the VP nominee is until around the time of the Convention, not the Olympics. Corporate media still doesn't get that they ain't calling no shots for the Obama campaign; they are only privy to what he tells them. This is just another failed attempt with them trying to drive the Obama campaign narrative.

In over 30 years of my being a political junkie, I've never played veep stakes, yet it's never failed that, in the end, acquaintances and friends who played the game were all wrong; ultimately, someone no one ever considered was chosen.

Personally, I'm getting all giddy about the convention because ain't nothing like a Dem convention; they always have something going on, even when there's no speaker in the hall. This is going to be arguably the most exciting in history. I can hardly wait but I'll have to. Some of my friends have jumped the shark and are already envisioning the inauguration; I'm taking it a step at a time; first I'll digest the excitement of the convention.

John McCain being interviewed on the TODAY Show. He told us that he does know about the economy -- boasting of his tenure as Chair of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. In fact, McCain chaired that committee from 1997- 2001, then 2003- 2005. One area of the committee's jurisdiction is "Science, engineering, and technology research and development and policy." So, McCain was in charge of the committee with jurisdiction over technology issues -- during a period of some amazing technological advances -- but he doesn't know how to get online. That's classic.
