I like to joke about how anything is possible in America cause I graduated third from bottom position in my navy class. Yeah its a great country. C yale-legacy students can also become president. And people who graduate top of their Harvard Law School class can become president .... oh wait never mind they arn't qualified and are elitist.

GOP Senators filibuster Stroke Treatment, Vision Care for Kids, Paralysis research, Combating Child Exploitation...

This afternoon, by a vote of 52 - 43, Republican Senators stuck with Tom Coburn and voted against moving forward of the Omnibus package, which included numerous vital bills sponsored by some of those same GOP Senators.

The roll call vote is here. Susan Collins (ME) burnished her right wing credentials by sticking with Coburn.

Those Republicans filibustered the bill and wouldn't even allow debate to proceed.

From Harry Reid, a partial list of what was at stake:
“The same Republican Senator who continued to hold up passage of the ALS Registry Act has unfortunately done the same for dozens of other worthy and overwhelmingly bipartisan bills. Just a few of these bills include:
The Emmitt Till Unsolved Crimes bill – Which would help heal old wounds and provide the Department of Justice and the FBI tools needed to effectively investigate and prosecute unsolved civil rights era-murders.

The Runaway and Homeless Youth bill -- Which would provide grants for health care, education and workforce programs, and housing programs for runaways and homeless youth.

The Combating Child Exploitation bill – Which would provide grants to train law enforcement to use technology to track individuals who trade child pornography and establish an Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

From the beginning, LaVena's death made no sense as a suicide. She was happy and had been talking with friends and family regularly3--nothing indicated she could be suicidal. And when the Johnsons received her body, they noticed signs that she had been beaten.4 That was when they started asking questions.

After two years of being denied answers and hearing explanations that made no sense, the Johnsons received a CD-ROM from someone on the inside. It contained pictures of the crime scene where LaVena died and an autopsy showing that she had suffered bruises, abrasions, a dislocated shoulder, broken teeth, and some type of sexual assault. Her body was partially burned; she had been doused in a flammable liquid, and someone had set her body on fire. A corrosive chemical had been poured in her genital area, perhaps to cover up evidence of rape.5

Still the Army sticks by their story. They refuse to explain the overwhelming physical evidence that LaVena was raped and murdered and continue to claim that she killed herself.

For many Black youth, and working class young people of every race, the military is seen as an option for securing a better future. LaVena came from a deeply supportive family, and while the military wasn't her only option, she was attracted by its promise to help her pay for a college education and the opportunity to travel around the world. She also thought that by joining she could continue her lifelong commitment to serving other people in need. She made a decision to serve in the military, with all its risks, and expected respect and dignity in return.

LaVena's death is part of a disturbing pattern of cases where female soldiers have been raped and killed, and where the military has hidden the truth and labeled the deaths suicides.6,7 In virtually all cases, Congress has been slow to investigate or hold the military accountable in any way. Unfortunately, most families simply don't have the resources, time, and psychological strength to push back.

We can help the Johnsons, and other families, by holding Congress accountable in the LaVena Johnson case and by demanding it investigate the pattern of cover-ups by the military.

Just in on MSNBC McCain had a small mole removed from his body might be cancerous might not be.The republicans will not nominate McCain they will look elsewhere lest their losses will be even bigger than anyone is even predicting.

The Republicans would be even more cynical than I think they are to put this man up for the nomination.

If they can find a health-related story to get him to get out of the race, they will.

In swing-state Colorado, the Republican Secretary of State conducted the biggest purge of voters in history, dumping a fifth of all registrations. Guess their color.

In swing-state Florida, the state is refusing to accept about 85,000 new registrations from voter drives – overwhelming Black voters.

In swing state New Mexico, HALF of the Democrats of Mora, a dirt poor and overwhelmingly Hispanic county, found their registrations disappeared this year, courtesy of a Republican voting contractor.

In swing states Ohio and Nevada, new federal law is knocking out tens of thousands of voters who lost their homes to foreclosure.

My investigations partner spoke directly to Barack Obama about it. (When your partner is Robert F. Kennedy Jr., candidates take your phone call.) The cool, cool Senator Obama told Kennedy he was “concerned” about the integrity of the vote in the Southwest in particular.

He’s concerned. I’m sweating.

U.S. Military Says Soldiers Fired on Civilians

BAGHDAD — The American military admitted Sunday night that a platoon of soldiers raked a car of innocent Iraqi civilians with hundreds of rounds of gunfire and that the military then issued a news release larded with misstatements, asserting that the victims were criminals who had fired on the troops.

The attack on June 25 killed three people, a man and two women, as they drove to work at a bank at Baghdad’s airport. The attack infuriated Iraqi officials and even prompted the Iraqi armed forces general command to call the shooting cold-blooded murder.

It also bolstered calls from Iraqi politicians to pressure the American military to leave Iraq after this year, when a United Nations mandate expires, unless the United States agrees to permit its soldiers to be subject to criminal prosecution under Iraqi law for attacks on civilians.

In a statement issued late Sunday, the American military said that “a thorough investigation determined that the driver and passengers were law-abiding citizens of Iraq.” It added that the soldiers were not at fault for the killings because they had fired warning shots and exercised proper “escalation of force” measures before they opened fire on the people in the car.

I was watching C-Span this morning, and the author of a book called "Collateral Damage" was discussing his interviews with Iraq vets and one of the former soldiers that he interviewed refused to return to service because of the treatment of Iraqi civilians. I just can't imagine the type of behavior these young men and women have seen. How are you not changed forever by it?

I don't think it is that simple Craig. While I grieve for the Iraqi families that have lost their loved ones, I just find it hard to believe that people can go to a country and totally lose their moral compass. We are talking about shooting people in cold blood. I do think that these men and women are facing enormous stress and making decisions that they might not in other circumstances.

But since I am not there, and can't speak for them, it is just my opinion.

Obama's Fauxtonement Maariv claims that "Obama submitted a copy of the note to media outlets when he left his hotel in Jerusalem," before visiting the wall.

A “conspiracy”? Nope! Is Anything Sacred? …the Obama campaign actually leaked the note to reporters before Obama even placed it in the wall. A quote from Ma'ariv: “Barack Obama's note was approved for publication in the international media even before he put in the Kotel (Western Wall), a short time after he wrote it at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem.” It was a photo op…fully staged, and has now backfired…OOPS!

My whole issue with this Iraq withdrawal situation is I agree with both Petraeus and Obama. I think withdrawal should depend on the conditions on the ground (which Obama agrees with) and with the bombing today (that killed 59 people) Iraq is not quite ready for withdrawal. But I also think that our continued presence there will only be staving off violence If the Iraqi government doesn't step it up and try to take a more active role in governing, and doing more for its people.
It just seems like we are babysitting an intra-country conflict.

He's delusional. He's troubled. He's unprincipled. He's dangerous. He needs help.

If I vote for McCain, it will be because I feel that of the two candidates, he will be the least worst for this country. And if he does someething while president that I disagree with, I'll say so.

If Obama just randomly went marching off to war for no apparent reason, I'd like to think you wouldn't support him either (then again, I may be wrong......or someone will just say that "Obama would NEVER do that!!").

It's not an exact science; however, a General's business is war, he/she is invested in combat and conflict. Dentists are invested in the possibility of cavities. Reporters are invested in intrigue and scandal.

What do you think soldiers are invested in?

Getting their job done, whatever that job entails.

Then, if it's just a job....and not a mystical "call". Then soldiers can be judged like cops and lawyers and dentists.

I have been thinking about this too.

It's not just about Petraeus, IMO. It also goes to McCain trying to associate military experience with fitness to be Commander in Chief. It looks "ok" to make such an association (oooh, military = Commander in Chief) only because of ignorance or willful disregard for the fact that Commander in Chief is deliberately a civilian post.

Anyway, I remember Senator Obama's marvelous clarity in one of the debates where he said that the Commander in Chief sets the mission. That was solid stuff -- he is clear on what's what IMO.

He knows innocent civilians are being raped and murdered and does nothing. He's probably participated in numerous nefarious actions that would have sent him to prison had he been a civilian. Serving your country when it's being attacked is one thing, actually rescuing people is one thing, but stealing resources from other people and killing them to get to them is not honorable. He may be following orders but he is not innocent.

Don't forget the fact Petraeus is paying off the militias so they won't shoot Americans and the ethnically cleansed - oops, I mean "soft partitioned" - the neighborhoods so the warring factions would be separated from one another. I wonder how long he thinks he can keep that up....

If you're still a McCain supporter after the way he has politicized wounded troops and lying lying lying, suggesting Barack is a traitor above all else, then I openly question your integrity as a man who has worn the uniform.

A moment of candor: at this point, McCain is the lesser of two evils to me. I have strong policy disagreements with both candidates (though more with Obama than with McCain). Here lately, I've actually considered not voting....but that wouldn't be helpful either. So I'm left with the option of "holding my nose" and voting for the candidate with whom I disagree with less.

The point is the nonsense that is the republicans main talking point that the surge has produced miraculous results and you must say that the surge is a strategy that all must adhere to.Granted when you flood Baghdad with 30,000 troops after the ethnic cleansing of the neighborhoods that violence will be decreased.

Come on.......the surge was not designed to rid Baghdad of all its evils. I know that, you know that-though you'll never admit it!-and most of the American people know it as well.

What it was designed to do was:

1. drive violence down (which happened, by the way....and not just because we "flooded" Baghdad. In case you forgot, one of the key missions of the surge was to get American troops out from behind the Green Zone and into other areas of Iraq that they had abandoned),

2. give the Iraqi government space and time to establish a strong military and make political progress as well (which also happened, contrary to liberal opinion).

The surge has proudced positive results (wouldn't say miraculous, as Jesus did not return during the course of it). It's a strategy that, contrary to liberal opinion, has succeeded.

It is not a strategy it is a tactic.1- A Strategy is a long term plan of action designed to achieve a particular goal, most often "winning." Strategy is differentiated from tactics or immediate actions with resources at hand by its nature of being extensively premeditated, and often practically rehearsed. Strategies are used to make the problem easier to understand and solve.2-TacticsThe United States Army Field Manual 3-0 offers the following definition of tactics: "Tactics – (Department Of Defense) 1. The employment of units in combat. 2. The ordered arrangement and maneuver of units in relation to each other and/or to the enemy in order to use their full potentialities. (Army) The employment of units in combat. Off subject: what branch of service were you in?

Let's look at those definitions: in this case, the strategy-the plan of action-was to deploy more troops to Iraq to reach the goals that I stated above. One of the tactics of said strategy was the redeployment of troops outside of the Green Zone/Baghdad areas to other cities and provinces.

As such, the Anbar Awakening and its related movements across Iraq could not have happened without the tactic of putting Americans with Iraqis in the local communities. Which could not have been possible had the strategic decision been made to send more troops to Iraq in the first place.

The Anbar Awakening happen before the surge I believe the timeline was for the awakening was Septo6 and the surge was announced in Jan 07 so I guess in republican world the surge which happen after was responsible.Maybe the navy has a different definition of strategy and tactics but according to the Army FM what the surge is a tactic.By the way I was in the Army.Here is a link that you should look into

Same here. My very bright kids went to Duke and Harvard, and then on to professional degrees in medicine and law. They were National Merit Scholars coming out of high school. Limpballs has been saying for a long while that Obama getting into Harvard & Columbia was just affirmative action and him being the Pres. of the Law Review was just "affirmative action." They've taken snipes at Michelle and Princeton, too.

I would say the majority of the people bitching about Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, and affirmative action have never seen the inside of a college. I'll say this: I'll believe their stance on affirmative action if they apply it to ALL students of color, starting with the football and basketball team. If they truly believe that everyone who goes to X college needs to have at least a 3.5 GPA and a 1500 on the SAT, that needs to apply to the black athletes as well. But they ain't going for that and we all know why.

I am very sorry that I didn't make it clearer to you and Andrew Sullivan that the piece was intended as satire of a particular type of right winger who takes even reasoned opinions and twists them to an agenda. I am beginning to realize that the American right has killed satire.

Karl Rove's last hope (besides the character assassination he's so famous for) is to put more wedge issues on ballots in swing states. Affirmative Action is one of them.
