I thank Ms. McCauley for getting her view out there, though. I'm also a white dude, and her dispatch speaks to a kind of subtle bigotry that white people can (perhaps unknowingly) express under the guise of humor or good intentions (having once used a wheelchair myself, and now that I'm walking with a visible limp, I've often been on the business end of it myself).

There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, to no avail.

Your final paragraph is too true—and so depressing. As a White woman with Black children I yearn for an end to America's addiction to racism. Not just because I want my own children to somehow be unscarred by the hate, but because racism sickens us all, victims and perpetrators alike.

I wish that Obama's Presidency would mean we've moved beyond it, but that's not what it will mean.

I do have hope, though, that the conversations—painful, angry, difficult, good, whatever—that are being held all around our country because of his rise will actually help to move us forward. Time will tell, I suppose.
