More importantly, are there any colleges or universities (Bob Jones doesn't count) that would accept a student who hadn't completed a foreign language course? They certainly require it at St. Albans where most of the children of pols and the Washington media attend, including those at Fox News.

Is there a public high school in America that doesn't require successful completion of at least two semesters of a foreign language to graduate? More importantly, are there any colleges or universities (Bob Jones doesn't count) that would accept a student who hadn't completed a foreign language course? They certainly require it at St. Albans where most of the children of pols and the Washington media attend, including those at Fox News. So, why is this a big deal when it's been the American tradition for decades? Because Fox says it's a big deal?

I'm trying to understand why this was a “dumb” thing for him to say, unless now the conventional wisdom is that he should play it safe? Help me understand what day of the week he's supposed to step to left and show leadership and what day of the week he's supposed to stay in the safe center.

My husband and I traveled frequently while working to other countries. Most of my business travels were to Taiwan. My husband has traveled all over the world.

Giuliani's comments are just ignorant. I met people in Taiwan who would have their children go to special classes at the end of their school day to learn English because they wanted their children to have that "extra" leg up on career options. Well, guess what...we are a global world....no matter what foreign language you choose for your child or your child chooses...it is a plus for them.

I have thought for years that Americans are way behind in thinking when they restrict their children in only knowing their native language. My first time overseas was a trip to Germany. I had gone out on my own to get lunch and I and went to a local deli and had to point at my selections. I felt like an idiot. Many Germans visit America knowing the basic language and find their way around our country quite well. When it came time to pay, I put out my German money and let them take out of my hand what they said the bill was. It was quite the learning experience for me.

What in the world is wrong with people when they think that having our children skilled in more than one language is "anti-American?"

I actually tried to learn Mandarin....it is a very hard language to learn because it involves vocal tones, meaning the tone in how a word is used depicts the meaning....anyway I didn't get far. I'm not giving up on learning some foreign language though. I'm 59 years old and contemplating a start at trying spanish or Italian within the next year.

“I do believe Obama made a misstep. He should have said MANDARIN, considering that the Chinese OWN US. Spanish was a dumb thing for him to say, considering that it was red meat for a certain segment of the population, who then totally misrepresented what Obama meant by his comments.”
