It was an interesting conference. With more input it will be a great conference. Scheduling caucuses of various interests at the same time and in one day do a disservice to those who would be interested in gaining different perspectives outside ones they're familiar with. I should not have had to choose between the Feminist bloggers or African-American caucus. I would have loved to attend the Latino or the Asian caucus as well. It is more than a scheduling issue and having to choose. It was a lack of thought process in providing options. There were perhaps 20 black people total in attendance including the candidates on the stage. The outgoing Director mentioned how she didn't believe in 'diversity' and denied Markos has any involvement with this conference. Am I to believe a former school teacher from Memphis had the pull to get Nancy Pelosi and Al Gore all by herself?! CPL took the time to explain to her what diversity means and how civil rights legislation came to pass and what affirmative action is and isn't as she had no clue. I'm not sure which is more problematic. 1000 Black people could have been in attendance and with some financial assistance that may eventually be the case, but there needs to be more people involved and I would say hired staffers not simply volunteers to steer the direction of this conference to have a variety of perspectives. People of color need to be at the table and calling the shots or it's just another brown face in a high place situation. I hope that we who are part of the Afrosphere and civically/politically minded are finally ready to move beyond that. Yes there was a strong presence and it was a wonderful opportunity to meet many people, though Kevin was not at that panel. One of the attendees was a sponsor who had submitted proposals that had not been reviewed and not had phone calls returned. He was subsequently asked at the last minute to participate and asked to find others 3 weeks before the conference. That does not appear to be the actions of inclusion or organization. So it's great that you're on the Board and I hope you will be able to address these things. I couldn't go without commenting my slightly different perspective from my time as a first time participant and offering a bit of critique as well. The locals I stayed with watched the Al Gore speech on television and the first thing they commented on was the sea of white men that made up the bulk of the audience. Perhaps we all have the wrong assumption in thinking the conference should look as diverse as this country and it is truly for those that have the financial means to participate, take time off from work or are paid bloggers, can afford computers and not live in redlined neighborhoods where broadband/dsl prices fluctuate greatly. If that was the best they could do I see a lot of room for improvement.
