With websites, content is king. Media takeout has an ugly site, but it gets more traffic than any other black website in the world. Only designers get caught up in all the design crap.

There is indeed a strong community of WordPress consultants and designers for hire...but given the (relative) ease of WP, you may want to consider using a free theme or a "premium" theme.

Premium themes are *generally* a cut above most of the free themes in terms of design and sophistication. That said, some of the very best free themes are the equal of any premium layout.

Premium theme prices seem to range between $35 and $130 or so. A bargain compared to the cost of hiring a decent designer.

Whether going the free or the premium route, you may want to look at the various "magazine style" themes that are available. That style would probably match up well with your plans for the future of the site.

Here in STL, PubDef.net upgraded from a Blogger version to a stylish WP site using a premium theme called Premium News.

A "magazine style theme" Google search will yield a lot of candidates. Or try this fine list for a sample - mostly for-pay premium themes with a couple of free ones at the end (including the free theme I use, The Morning After).

Caveat: Most premium-style themes require a bit more knowledge about WP than more basic themes require. It's well worth it, though.

Also highly recommended: WordPress for Dummies by Lisa Sabin-Wilson. Great intro guide. Sabin-Wilson (who is a freelance WP designer) includes in the book a section on what to consider when hiring a designer or consultant.

I dig Boyce Watkins, but please, don't EVER have a website that looks like his. Hurts the eyes...

Boyce Watkins

Also, just curious.
