Shortly after the Virginia Tech shootings–and the revelation that the shooter was Korean American–a government official from Korea was said to have called our government to offer an apology. Was that their responsibility to do so? To them, maybe so. To some White Americans, maybe so. To some Black Americans … well, for me, I don’t think it was necessary.

That said, there are still those in our community that we “claim” as our own. And some of them do some pretty vile stuff. But at some point, we gotta cut those folks loose, and concentrate on those who still have (and want) a chance.

you don’t need a “Bogey-Man” to give ammo to racists, racists are defined by taking aim although there is no ammo.

In this particular situation there were people that did the right thing. They called 911. They gave their eye witness reports and hopefully they’ll be witnesses at the trial as well. There are many situations where no one comes forward.

What America has to deal with is how we got to the point that “manhood” and “masculine strength” has become so fragile and weak that it requires blood, death and destruction as the price for the most inconsequential actions.

Too much emphasis is put on strength being about destruction rather than building. Our government right now is based on that suicidal philosophy. In order to be strong we have to destroy not build. It’s killing all of us.

We as a nation have to make strength about constructing.

No Obama can not miraculously save us he is certainly a step towards constructing a better future and a definitive step away from the current rut of destruction that we’ve been wallowing in for far too long.

I agree, why are “we” defined by the most vile among us? I don’t get that logic either.

I can see both points being posted here but there is something unsettling about the idea of “not loving ourselves, means we (as black Americans) aren’t worthy of being treated as human beings”

Last time I checked, I am a law abiding citizen. Is it my responsibility that other’s are not…someone, somewhere I’ve never met…or is it my responsibility to go by and teach my children a moral code and hope they make the right choices in their life?

I hope to hell I am not defined by what a murderer does, just because he happens to share my skin color.

However, we know that is the case many times. It’s unjust and it’s wrong.

IMO, it is a form of internalized racism of the race-representation kind. Seriously? Why are “WE” defined by incidents like this?

No one suggest that White America is defined by the polygamist ranch, campus riots (Michigan State, etc.) or any number of terrible criminal incidents. But for some reason, Black people do this self-loathing stuff complete with this “giving them ammunition” rhetoric that suggest that the only way we can be acceptable to ourselves is for us, all of us, to be perfect specifically because of what somebody else will say.

From that type of commentary, it’s clear the thing we refuse to give to ourselves is the freedom to be human which is not to be confused with superhuman.

If we as African-American, Black, Negro, people, can’t love ourselves, we can’t expect others to love us, or accept us, or treat us as human beings worthy of dignity and respect, either.

I have a huge issue with this idea that Black people have to be perfect in order to be treated as human.

We grant respect to others without respect to how they treat each other and we hardly judge others by the most despicable among them, etc., etc.
