Patterson's OpEd wasn't worthy of being printed. Especially after the fact that it was pointed out that there is a black child in the ad.

You know, I didn't fully "get it" about the 3 AM ad until I watched it again, with the sound turned off. The visuals are this:

Shot of sleeping white child.
Shot of sleeping white child.
Shot of sleeping white child.
Shot of sleeping white child.
Shot of panicking white Mom throwing open child's bedroom door, half-expecting to see either an empty bed because the child has been kidnapped, or else a grisly murder scene. The shots, together, build tension to a crescendo.

The shot at the end of Hillary at a desk is extraneous to the message. The visual message of the first 24 seconds of the 30-second spot is that "white children are at risk."

Now, what is the risk? Is it Al Qaeda? Have international terrorists taken to kidnapping sleeping American children.

Um, no.

This ad was a "Willie Horton" ad. I completely agreed with Patterson's article.

I'm not so sure that a sweeping statement that "employing fear as an argument for security" is exclusively racial in nature. Films like Red Menace were propaganda films stirring fear of the Communist other, not the brown or ethnic other.

In that film, a man wakes up and his family has turned into a tribe of zombies/robots without love or passion. The man-of-the-house is thus faced with the horror of finding utilitarianism the new basis for his familial relationships. His fear at that moment has little to do with the massively emotional interplay of race in this country.

In WWI also, ethnic stereotypes were cast upon Germans and Eastern Europeans to the point where my alma mater changed its mascot from the "huns" to the "hens." Fear is a universal emotion not limited to fear of another race.

I’m impressed by the brilliance of the red phone ad. Hillary’s monstrous inauthenticity was reframed as a strength! We didn’t see much in the way of her body language or facial expression, but we sure got the message: “at 3:00 a.m., when your family is asleep, the monster will protect them.” What a great use of the politics of fear: things are so bad out there, you need a real meanie to protect you. And the child in the pajamas, with GOOD NIGHT on the back, could have been Barack.

Unfortunately, it’s the perfect ad for her.

Every adverse fact about Obama becomes a racist remark. Every picture found on the internet that "the one" does not like becames the "politics of fear."

Now, finally someone (after an exhaustive over and over viewing the splendid 3am ad) has made THE connection...SEE, SEE it is racist too. I wonder if "the one" allowed Mr. Paterson an audience with him. He did good works for "the one."

I am going to suggest to Hillary to just have 3seconds ads saying "Vote for Me." The upside is she can afford alot, alot, a whole lot of these ads and even after looking at it over and over and over again I am sure no racist intent will be found. The downside her ad contain will finally be on parody with "the chosen one" ones.

Obama has overplayed the race card. It will backfire.

I'm not criticizing the Clintons for trying to race-bait Obama as they have in the past, I don't even believe their exploitation of this phenomenon is deliberate.

Well I am. Their race-baiting and exploitation of fear around race and religion is absolutely deliberate.

They don't deserve the benefit of the doubt.

They know exactly what they're doing and it's counterproductive to think otherwise.
