I love the hell out of Tina Fey and always have, but that was way off, and your analysis is right on.

It's right to satirize the disgusting sexism that has made this campaign season so damn miserable. But it's disingenuous, at best, to do that while specifically, and apparently without any sense of irony, deploying the inevitably weighty word "Black."

We'll never know what the SNL hit rate would have been on each of the candidates had the WGA strike not gone on as long as it did. I like to hope they'd have been more equal-opportunity in terms of pillorying anybody and everybody in power. (Hope: it's a powerful thing, and a tool for actual change, however it may be cynically maligned by Clinton, et. al.)

P.S. And don't even get me started on Taylor Marsh. Whatever "feminism" she claims to operate from is not the one I've been embracing for decades now.

Tina Fey is not, nor has she ever been funny, kind of like SNL. One thing is for sure, the HRC camp/supporters are as bad as George Wallace, both Bush's and David Duke's with the tiresome racial trash.

Thank you for saying this. I don't get this whole rallying around Hillary and sisterhood thing. I don't like her positions and I don't like her racially-tinged attacks. Where was the sisterhood when Hillary supporter Andrew Young was claiming Bill was blacker than Obama because of all the Black women Bill had dated?

I didn't like Fey's comment, but I took it to mean "black" as in "little black dress," i.e. a fashion statement, not as in being a black person. I recently heard a fashion pundit refer to the color red on the runways during fashion week as the new "black." I'm trying not to overanalyze this, of course. Go Obama!

I like Tina Fey but her Weekend Update commentary was just stupid and not funny. It slammed women who don't vote for Hillary as faux feminists because they're only voting for Obama because Oprah told them to. Then the whole "bitches can get things done" was followed up with a slam against those who don't want a co-presidency. According to Tina, what's wrong with having 2 such highly intelligent people working together? So which it it? The bitch can get it done? Or the bitch needs her husband?

Whatever the case, I found her strident (hey, I can say it because it's true and I'm a woman), and (like Nita above) it immediately reminded me of how she acted during Kobe Bryant's rape case. Didn't she announce the defense attorney's phone number on the air because she was so angry that the lawyer said the name of the victim in court?

Ugh. Talk about jumping the shark.

Not that I disagree with feeling things I don't want to feel for Senator Clinton, let me say this at the risk of having tomatoes thrown in my direction:

Let's promote what Obama is promoting: hope, faith, courage, change, and an end to divisiveness.

Clinton is a tragic figure. She'll likely fall on her own sword. She doesn't need our help and we don't need to twist it. If people want to vote for her, so be it.

But let's try to get people to vote for Obama instead of against Clinton. It's all we can do to bring about the change we want.

And if you really have a problem with her tactics, write an email to the DNC directly and let them know about it.

I've already sent four.

Reading how far Hillary Clinton has fallen, how much her campaign is working on racism, it makes me want to cry. Not for Barack Obama but for all of us. This is pure evil and that's not something I would have imagined saying in relation to a Clinton. I can't find any sympathy or feeling for this woman. Using racism as a tool of destruction against a black man, in general, is beyond disgusting. It makes me want to leave this country. I'm a New Yorker and I have to say this. If I ever met Hillary I would slap her in the face. I have no respect for her. She leaves me angry, sad, and miserable. I can't believe the ultra right was right about her all along.

@ Anonymous said... "Or, am I giving them more credit than they deserve?"

If that was all it meant, then Bob Johnson really did mean to reference Obama's community work on the Southside of Chicago when he made his wink wink nudge nudge statements with Hillary beside him on stage.

I ain't buying it, Anonymous. There's a black man and a white woman (never forget the white in front of woman) running for President, the black man is 'beating' the white woman, most importantly the white woman is running on identity politics -- and 'bitch is the new black' only has one meaning? I can't buy it.

'Bitch' is supposed to be fashionable now? I can't buy it, particularly since it's OBAMA who's being described as running the feminine campaign -- and 'bitchy' Hillary has lost 11 in a row, not counting the close contests in New Hampshire and Nevada, and not counting the farces that were Michigan and Florida. So how exactly is 'bitch' fashionable, in Tina Fey's world?

It just appears like more circling the wagons b.s., kind of like older white women flocking to Hillary because she cried over how she's able to have her hair done every day; and older black women flocking to Hillary because Bill cheated on her. Bitch isn't really fashionable, but seeing yourself in a person being attacked is. That's human, but Tina and crew need to be honest.

Besides, what happened to kicking anybody's butt who used the term 'bitch' for Hillary? They need to make up their minds about whether or not they're going to embrace the word or not as descriptive of their candidate.

The Hillbot DUers quoted the 'women are the niggers of the world' as from Yoko Ono -- you know, the privileged from birth chick who broke up the band and his marriage and tried everything in her power to screw over Julian. Since I'm banned over there, I couldn't say anything about how word order is important. It's 'women' who are 'niggers'.... not 'blacks' who are the 'women' of the world. And then I saw an argument that it wasn't very nice to be put on a pedastal. Whatever.

But yes, I agree with what you've written. God, do I agree.

And yes, I caught that 'bitch is the new black'. Yes, I found it offensive. No, I didn't think that it was just a play on the old fashion statement. No, I don't think Hillbots realize how offensive it is to make that statement this year. Yes, I remember how Tina Fey's SNL treated Kobe Bryant. Yes, I realize that SNL has always underutilized their black cast members (except during the Eddie Murphy years, but that was in spite of themselves). Even Chris Rock, white America's favorite comedian, was reduced to stereotypes (ie -- Long Dong Silver during the Thomas-Hill hearings) who weren't in control. What I'm wondering about is the type of people who found that stuff funny or Tina Fey's Weekend Update endorsement of Clinton appropriate. Then again, I thought MadTV's Umbrella parody was hilarious; but apparently most people on political blogs feel it was tasteless and without humor. I guess that's my prole slip showing.

Is gender identity politics that important? I guess it is. But I feel no kinship with Tina Fey. The fellow feelings I felt for Hillary Clinton because she had her own ambitions, not because she stuck with a philanderer, are lost now. Her entire campaign has been disrespectful -- but the Hillbots continue to try to paint OBAMA as the 'arrogant' (code word?) and disrespectful one.

That pedastal must feel aweful comfy in spite of itself.

I guess that’s my prole slip showing.

Is gender identity politics that important? I guess it is. But I feel no kinship with Tina Fey. The fellow feelings I felt for Hillary Clinton because she had her own ambitions, not because she stuck with a philanderer, are lost now. Her entire campaign has been disrespectful — but the Hillbots continue to try to paint OBAMA as the ‘arrogant’ (code word?) and disrespectful one.

That pedastal must feel aweful comfy in spite of itself.

Are you going to add Fey's "bitch is the new black" to your clintonattacksobama wiki site?

What about the actor portraying Obama in tan face? Surely that should be added.

(I couldn't resist. ;-))

In Fey's defense, she did not go after Obama, but she did go after Clinton's critics - a different target. Problem is, Clinton is not losing because people think she is bitchy, she is losing because she is the weaker candidate. If bitches know how to get things done, they might start with learning how the rules in Texas work.

- KXB

I can't even begin to express how right you are about this. I really don't have anything coherent or particularly profound to say. And even though it has been extremely uplifting to see so many different groups of people coming together around an Obama candidacy, too many folks (read: white folks) JUST. DON'T. Get. IT.

I don't know whether to laugh or weep about SNL's choice to play Barack.

Now, having said all that,I think that the joke about "bitch being the new black" is more a play on what the fashion world says each year--that a new color palette is the new black. You know, orange is the new black. Grey is the new black, etc.

Or, am I giving them more credit than they deserve?
