PV students have had to put up with this and much worse over the course of many years. I found this at Mother Jones in an article titled "11 of America's worst places to cast a ballot (or try)":

#9 Suspect Students
Waller County, Texas

Prairie View A&M is a black school in the heart of east Texas, where the local leadership has, over many decades, worked to deny the students' claims to being full-time county residents and thus eligible to vote. In 2003, Waller County district attorney Oliver Kitzman wrote a letter to the elections administrator and the local newspaper warning that any students who tried to vote could face 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. The NAACP filed suit, noting that as far back as 1979 the U.S. Supreme Court, ruling on a lawsuit brought by Prairie View students, held that students could register to vote in the communities in which they attended college.

Right on! That's wonderful. Next time you see some aging boomer who more than likely had never marched in his/her life talk about the "good old days" and wondering when kids will march, point them to this.

Voting rights for our college students is actually a huge issue. I've recently written about this, and discovered several organized efforts to combat student disenfranchisement. The worse thing that can happen is for all of these young people who have gotten energized to become jaded when they see that they are being systematically cut off from the political process.

It's great that they have been involved (especially in Obama's campaign, but for whoever), but the key is finding ways to keep them involved.

One of the biggest fears of established politics, IMO, is an empowered--and *voting*--youth base...

Now that's a cause to march for. Outstanding. Praise be to Prairie View and its students and faculty. They are awesome.

I also hope that the reason why they had to march in the first place is rectified so that folks won't have to march in order to be able to more easily take advantage of their rights as citizens to VOTE.
