A couple of years ago, right after the 2004 election, someone on DailyKos had mentioned visiting family in Michigan for Thanksgiving and couldn’t understand what all the “Canadian” talk was about. It wasn’t until 4 days into the visit that he realized they were talking about black people. He was completely floored and shamed by that.

Yea...this isnt new. Racists in this country have a million code words. Where I work (located 20 minutes from New York City)the code word is "Rose". I noticed that they say "rose" whenever a black person walks in. Its a cover word for their racial profiling.

Remember these are the same people who covered themselves in white sheets. If they were ever proud of being racist, then they would have shown their faces.

By the way, I am also of West Indian parentage and half of my family lives in Canada.
Its no insult to be called a Canadian.

This is what I’ve been saying all along. We are only 30 and some change years from the Civil Rights Act being enacted, however why are people surprised that a peace of paper does not change hearts and minds? Neither does it stop the ability to pass on this kind of thinking to the next generation.

I’m black. And Canadian. Really, of West Indian parentage but still born and partly raised in Canada.

I can’t figure out which pisses me off more – that these morons still have these attitudes and are using codewords to hide it, or that they are using ‘Canadian’ as a derogatory term.

If Americans think ‘Canadian’ is derogatory, they should leave the nest and see how the rest of the world sees them. When I went to the UK on vacation 3 years ago and told the cashier at Marks & Spencer that I would be using my Canadian passport as ID (for traveller’s cheques) he laughed – not because I was Canadian, but because he had encountered so many American tourists EMBARASSED to be identified as Americans that they were masquerading as Canadians, that he thought I was taking the piss.

These people should be so lucky as to live in a place like Canada which has free health care, strict gun control,one of the best school systems in the world, and celebrates its multicultural society. I am Canadian and proud.

Not only shame. There also fear in this behavior.

Americans like to pride themselves on being a prime example of many different cultures co-existing. In reality, Americans are really quite immature with respect to living in a multi-cultural society.

These neurotic quirks are not only unhealthy, but forbode even worse behavior as this country becomes less and less white-centric politically and economically. What will these people do then?
