Hitchens is obnoxious in his atheism, and his lack of understanding of Barack’s Church and MLK is grating, but his linking of religion and race seem to be coming from his contempt for the former rather than racism. As for the word tribalism, I won’t pretend I’m an expert on Kenyans because I’m dating one and have drunk Tuskers with some, but when complaining about politics they almost always use the word tribalism. When the word tribe is used by people from Africa what them mean is ethnic group for the most part. Hitchens is obnoxious but I don’t think he’s racist, at least not from what i’ve read here.

Your analysis of Hitchens is on point. I have never been a fan of his work or him. And the foul colonial context used by you to describe the poisonous intellectual context these folks, such as Hitchens, use in their attempt to belittle or dismiss us is old hat or traditional. Whether liberal, reactionary, or not, some of these people are just plain insane. Nice post!

I hate to be dismissive (okay, anyone who knows me is probably laughing their asses off at that one), but I do try to read these political pieces with an open mind. However, I struggled through Hitchen’s latest work because the same thought kept popping up, “Hitchens…take another drink.”

And yes, it’s somewhat offensive for someone like Hitchens who has dismissed all religion, to all of a sudden pretend to be The Expert on how people should worship.
