Funny :) But Obama is still something Unique. People hope and believe in him thus making the change is really possible.

I'm glad I found this site. Nice post. I find the "satire" in the Low Tidings piece to be stale by about a generation and a half. I commend Alec Baldwin for calling it to America's (or at least the Huffington Post's) attention. There is some strange irony here, though. Baldwin is being lauded for a particular scene on NBC's "30 Rock", where he does some role-playing/regressive hypnosis therapy with Tracy Morgan; Baldwin unleashes a slew of stereotypes about poor blacks while channeling Redd Foxx, Jimmie Walker, and a couple of Latinos for good measure. The Screen Actor's Guild, before awarding him as Best Actor in a Comedy Series, showed the clip as they announced the nominees. Now, to be clear, I don't think Alec Baldwin is by any means a racist or a bigot, but it would be interesting to see both the Low Tidings article, as well as the "30 Rock" clip, presented side-by-side and then see how the dialogue unfolds.

Come on, you had to see this one comming.

Either he's a coon or a poser.

These threatened, fearful, self-hating people can't make up their minds, except that they have to have a Black bogeyman to hate.

Now, just multiply this person by millions and you have the criminal justice system, corporations and others who still try to ensure that Blacks -- especially men, stay in their place in order to maintain their white entitlement. To frame it as a parody is all apart of the ruse to make you overly sensitive if you don't get the humor, get it?

Non-threatening Black men, i.e., Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan are always welcome; financially castrated the ideal Black Man.

Surprising, not in the least.

"Wow" is right! That's exactly what I said when I first read this. What's also fascinating is that with almost all advanced bigotry of this sort, you always see other forms of hatred creep in -- note the sexism, the homophobia. I'm shocked that the author didn't manage to sneak in an anti-semitic swipe, even a coded one. Although I'm not sure -- maybe "New York advisors" qualifies.

To the white former Republican, thank you for your comments and for cultivating an open mind. It's inspirational.

When I first read this article on HuffPost I just shook my head and recalled the funny movie "Blazing Saddles" For a long time I took racism personally and erroneously thought that if black people "acted" better we wouldn't be ridiculed. That was when I was in the "blame the victim" mode of thinking. Now I just feel sorry for racists because something is truly wrong with them. They are so very insecure. I wonder when we will convene a round table discussion about racists entitled "Why they Hate?" Cnn should study them. They love studying how hip-hop is the cause of all the worlds problems. I mean they are always trying to figure out the black mind. Figure out the racist mind please!! Do a study.. Call Tavis and put it on C-Span. Call it the "State of the Racist Union"

While there's no shortage of over-intellecualized Black folk who constantly downplay the racialization of ANYTHING, the fact remains that racialized (and thereby, degrading) humor and other subject matter ONLY appears when a Black person dares to assume a prominent position of national leadership.

These folks are regularly critical of "us" for being too sensitive about this racialization, yet rarely -- if ever -- are they critical of White people for introducting the subject matter in the first place.

Some days I'm surprised, and then I have to got through the whole - "why am I even surprised anymore?" thing. The 'article' is, frankly, bizarre. As dnA said - they make Obama out to be black - but not. [whichever's worse, I guess]

wow is all i can say.

Jill,

I'm a white guy. 53 years old. A lifelong Republican. But I'm tired of Bush, I'm tired of Iraq, and you know what else? I'm tired of racism.

The Central Park Jogger kids (young punks, but they didnt do it), Amadou Diallou, John White, Christopher Ridley. Yeah, 20 years later, I figured out that Al Sharpton is basically right.

Now we have a chance to elect a really inspirational leader who happens to be black. I hope we do.
