Minorities Exceed White Use of Mobile TV

The digital divide has taken on a new twist as the chart shows below. Blacks, Hispanics and ahem, everybody else (?) are adopting new mobile and internet technologies at a higher rate than Caucasians. Here’s an example — Take a look at the chart above for more details by age, gender and ethnicity. Not new data (it’s from over a year ago) but I just got it in the mail today…

This makes sense, one of the reasons for the digital divide is because African-American areas are under served by cable/high speed Internet providers, technology stores… But with a cell tower that broadcasts over a large distance including white and black areas, encourages those who don’t have access to “normal” means of the service, to seek other means?
Also the high number of users in the “other” category are probably Asians. Hmmm, I wonder why they where excluded?

i agree this isn’t necessarily a good thing or that surprising. within the media industry, it’s well-known that many “premium” media services (pay per view, premium cable, gaming systems) don’t correlate well to income like other luxury goods.
in fact the trend is sometimes reversed. poorer people tend to have HIGHER adoption of high end entertainment services.
this might be because these services are a substitute for other forms of activity or community. might be because of heavier marketing.
as far as this being good, it depends, but I’m skeptical. in this case we are just being better CONSUMERS than the average american. i’d prefer a stat which showed blacks’ higher propensity to hack their hardware or BUILD new services. the fact that we buy more stuff, especially non-essential, non-community-building, one-way, broadcast media services seems to me to be more of a negative.
tell me black folks hack their iphones more than average, and i’m excited.
tell me they send more money to media oligopolies, and i’m disappointed.
it’d be better if we bought some land.
