Agreed on the underlying morality of the case. Should these teenagers had significantly more supervision? Absolutely. Are kids sexually active too young and in inappropriate ways today? Sure. Though, teenage exploration of sex is a phenomenon as old as time. The question is providing enough information and guidance so that kids make the right choices.

I’ve heard it stated several times that the mother of the then 15 year old female said that Genarlow Wilson should not have been tried and jailed since the sex was consentual.

I don’t know anything about the character and motivations of this young man (good or bad) – other than being an honors student. I do know one thing, teenagers are going to be interested in sex and some are going to let’s say be “experimenting”.

However, this particular situation has some very unsavory elements – (1) young teenagers having a party in a hotel room, (2) at this unsupervised party, drugs and alcohol were in heavy use, (3) the 15 girl was video taped performing oral sex on Genarlow Wilson, (4) and Genarlow Wilson, who while acquitted, had been charged with raping at 17 girl also at the party. Apparently she was too drunk to have “consented”.

Obviously it is tragic to have had a 17 year old serve 2 years in prison for having had oral sex with a 15 year old girl. But…after that is said, I do wonder about the type of life style that he and these young girls are representing. Would anyone of us really want our own 15 year old daughter to have been the one video taped? Or would any of us want to know that our 17 year old daughter is out there somewhere in a hotel room so drunk that she doesn’t even know what someone is doing to her or so drunk that she has put herself in serious danger? The difficulty of parenting…isn’t it caring about the well being of your own child and also caring that your own child won’t compromise the well being of someone else? And, knowing that the emotion of caring by itself isn’t going to be enough. Sending a 17 year to prison isn’t going answer these questions for us. We’re going to have to answer them.
