There are a few factors contributing the the better conditions here, in the wake of the current disaster.

First and foremost is availability: large portions of San Diego are not directly affected by the fires. People are available to help, because they aren’t having to evacuate themselves. Most of the county is dealing with nothing worse than bad air. Katrina affected nearly all of the area along the coast. The aid efforts referred to are not federal efforts.

Second, we went through very similar fires in 2003, and we’re applying lessons learned then — and, to some degree, lessons learned from Katrina.

And if you think the people who evacuated to hotels are paying normal rates for those rooms, look again — I’m not even sure the hotels are charging them.

Comparing a fire mostly affecting the more rural edges of a major city to a flood affecting the bulk of the urban center is coomparing apples to oranges.

2. Most are going to visit ‘ friends’. Nobody in Katrina had ‘friends’, cause their ‘ friends’ homes WERE GONE TOO.

3. Or, they are going to hotels’. Folks left at Katrina COULDN’T AFFORD HOTELS.

While all the stuff you mentioned had me going Uh -Huh…that they took care of the ANIMALS just made me go WTF. ANIMALS here got treated better than HUMANS DURING KATRINA.

Folks shared foold, shelter and whatever else with one another. Did you not see people pushing old folks and children on rafts? They were not always their own. Did you not see the white woman w/ her baby at the Superdome who was being fanned and fed water by black bystanders?

Did you not read news reports of Jefferson Parish cops turning evacuees away with guns?

Of course white conservatives don’t act this way everywhere, but they sure have SOME who have kept this up for a long time in the south. For instance, you’ve heard of the “southern strategy” right? Talk up law and order as a sort of codespeak. It’s the way politicians pander to the good ol’ boys in the south and say, “it’s okay, we’re one of you.”

California doesn’t have the historical baggage and, like the cliche goes, everyone’s a little more laid back out there. (Like I said, I grew up in the L.A. area, although I’m out in the northeast now. The cliche has a point.)

I’m white, but I don’t mind calling out whites on certain things. But, yes, my language there was pretty general – sloppy.

Q: Assuming “zero” assitance from local, state or fed programs (except the red cross) or any other groups such as walmart and assuming the same level of destruction in the area….So all help would just come from the people actually affected… what dome would you have rather been in? and Why?
