There are abuses of people of color everyday by the system.

Just go into any traffic court of any major metropolitan city one would think only Blacks and Hispanics break traffic laws. It is not about guilt or innocence, it is about who has to suffer the enforcement.

Hmmm….in the Jena 6 case.
Whites beat a black and get nothing.
Blacks beat a white and get attempted murder charges.

The same laws were broken but the law is only enforced against ‘select’ groups in the community.

In many communities Black Law Enforcement is just as harsh if not harsher than their white counterparts toward members of their own race.

How can we expect White Progressives to speak to issues of importance to the Black community when our own elected leaders, presidential candidates, or those who have ‘made it’ ignore the issues to appear mainstream?

Blacks put blacks in office then they turn their backs.
Blacks put democrats in office then they turn their backs.
The cycle is continuously repeated.

It is really all about maintaining the status quo.

If it weren’t for the nooses, Jena 6 would have been business as usual as it is every day in every city across the country.

If this was a woman with a ‘questionable’ past, and this was a present rape case, they’d be all over it saying that ‘ what she did in the past didn’t matter. What matter is the PRESENT RAPE.

For a BLACK person, in THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, there’s NO OTHER WAY for that to be seen, unless you’re talking to Sambo Lawn Jockeys who wouldn’t see racism until the nanosecond before the noose was AROUND THEIR NECK.

In the noose incident – NOBODY WAS PUNISHED.

Then, we have the beating of a Black student – NOBODY CHARGED.

A White boy pulls a SHOTGUN on The Jena Six – they disarm him, take the gun to the police- AND THE POLICE CHARGE THE BLACK KIDS.

Then, there was the little assembly ONLY WITH THE BLACK PORTION OF THE STUDENT BODY where Mr. District Attorney THREATENED THEM. – nobody calls him on it.

And, after all of this, they Beat that White Boy, and SUDDENLY it’s ATTEMPTED MURDER?

GTFOH.

It was most apparent – last year – when Bill Clinton met with members of the netroots in NYC. There was not one single black/minority blogsphere represented amongst the smug little group.

The ways in which those in attendance ‘justified’ the lack of diversity should have served us notice.

Generally, one just has to read a few threads when ‘race’ pops up, to glean who’s who.

Increasingly, I’ve found some white so-called progressive bloggers to be condescending and dismissive or unable to seriously discuss ‘race’ in an unemotive/uncontentious manner.

When white liberals/so-called progressives are confronted with a few home truths it’s quite a spectacle. They act as though their noses have been [personally] put out of place, and become really defensive; really exposes who they are and shows us the depth of what they’re all about.

This is just one faux pas – an example of the contempt hypocritical liberals/so-called progressives have for black people.

That’s your problem right there. You think the complaint here is about a blog. It is not. And I’m going to explain only because it seems such a stretch to you.

There is a pattern in which the first reaction to claim of racism is to deny it. Each and every one. This case is an absolute parallel to problems Black people have across the country. That’s why it struck enough of a chord to draw some 10,000 Black people from across the country.

And that is disrespected enough to be referred to as a “bad Chris Rock movie.” Justice has bad production values.

THIS is the problem. The white progressive blogosphere’s non-action is rooted in this. That and the fear of having to deal with accusations of racism on their own part. The Jena 6 issue just illuminated the problem in undeniable (as in it must be responded to, not as in no one is in denial) fashion.

May I get some detail on the Jena 6’s prior criminal histories?

Nope, not scare them away, but not interest progressives enough to pay much attention — or distract them from their Halo 3’s, perhaps?

Let me put it another way, the marketing of the Jena 6 was a disaster. It didn’t sell. Many did not see attempted murder as overcharging. Many did not see that whites were handled different from blacks.

Then Jesse and Al showed up, and their presence alone turns off many progressives anymore. Those two have been responsible for so many embarrassments to progressive causes, they may as well both change their middle names to “Hoax”.

Then, NPR and MTV both report that the ‘white tree’ never existed. The symbol of the movement, its heart and soul, was the figment of Alan Bean’s overactive imagination.

Face it, Jena 6 was nothing but a bad Chris Rock movie, and it found its most sympathetic audience.

And I think its funny how last time this was brought up (whites not covering the Jena 6) that many actually said, yea you guys are wrong we are covering this. I mean, do you want every part of their blogs to be about Jena 6? If so you guys are not willing to fight racism…

All that is required to NOT be distracted is a little thought. I guess that’s too great an effort.

Like I said, if racism is the LAST thing you’re going to fight, you need to just say that.

The organizers were obviously selling hype. Why didn’t they hire a real PR firm? Their pleas were too long on passion and too short on fact. Their stories were too easily discredited, and the retractions on the NPR and MTV news sites killed their little remaining credibility. The march itself was little more than a video clip.

The bottom line explaining the subdued interest in the Jena 6 is the overwhelming value shared among many progressives that escalating violence is not a proper response to hate.
