. Hip-hop is developing a rich and varied documentary tradition, further cementing its status as the most important and influential artistic movement of our generation. People like Raqel Cepeda give me hope that this can be done independent of corporate forces

I loved the post and I love the site, however, I disagree with your assesment of Kanye's statements and the purpose of his song.

Your interpretation of his statements is, in my opinion, over simplified. I have read numerous interviews of his that came out around the time the song was released and he often mentioned how he wore less and less jewelry because he learned about the blood diamond trade.

The lyric that you referenced can also be interpreted as Kanye pointing out the American bred consumerist tendencies that poor people ( not just poor balcks, although he specifically references blacks ) have in this country.

Since Hip Hop's beginning rappers have coveted jewels. Slick Rick, Run DMC, Big Daddy Kane and a whole host of other noted artists flaunted and rhymed about their love affair with jewels. To single Kanye out for pointing out such a love affair is somewhat short sighted and a little unfair.

Finally, Kanye is known for expressing the ugly truths about Hip Hop culture in rhyme. Conditions to which many young black men fall vicitm to. His rhyme that says:

It's in a black person's soul to rock that gold/
Spend ya whole life tryna get that ice/

is simply commentary about the state of things...which he, himself, has gone through.

Overall, I enjoyed the article. I was just slightly offended with how you used Kanye as a set up for the rest of your post.
