Dyson IS a hip hop apologist, and misses the mark often with regards to these rappers and the need to hold them accountable.

I like him alot though, but when it comes to hip hop, he is all glorification all the time. He never has a critical word for Jay-Z who's entire claim to fame is he was a real hustler who really sold drugs. He's been rapping about selling drugs for 14 years now. Dyson doesn't see that.

ANyway, this is a dope ass blog, I dont know how I've missed it for so long.

I lost respect for Dr. Dyson when he used his PhD to defend Hip Hoppers using ‘ Nigga’. I can’t even tell you how much respect I lost for him, and that he CONTINUES to try and defend them using ‘ Nigga’, as if that makes one whit of difference, just pisses me off. It’s disgusting.

How u say something is important. I don’t mean that Cosby needed to sugar coat what he said, but he could have at least made his statement out of a place of care and respect. He was angry, and that anger made him cruel rather than helpful. That is also the only political statement i have heard from the man in my entire life.

Why? For telling them the painful truths that they need to hear?

I don't think so.

A mark of a good leader is their willingness to take unpopular positions, especially when it comes to pointing out problems among their own people.

Cosby is a much needed voice.

Dyson is a Hip Hop intellectual who likes to hustle books. I think even Dyson may have been thanking Cosby... (secretly).

Dyson quotes “To whom much is given much is expected”. Well, Cosby has put his money where his mouth is. As for demonizing poor Black women, how is telling the truth demonizing? Dyson is right, he is saying the same thing as the rappers, the difference is Cosby is doing it as a patriarch, not some fool telling them they are perpetual victims of society and therefore it is okay to have wanton and irresponsible behavior. The young mothers I see need to stop idolizing rappers and trying to dress their sons like them and start idolizing people who tell them the truth and live with that truth in mind. Dyson used Cosby as a publicity selling point, plain and simple. He does not care about anything except justifying the systematic, blatant, exploitation of poor black women AND MEN AND YOUTH. Cosby speaks to truth and I hope Obama continues to do so.

Well, I actually don't think that's what Dyson said. What Dyson said was:

There is nothing brave about demonizing poor black women. And if you talk about hip-hop’s demonization of black women, listen to Bill Cosby's speech and tell me you can tell the difference.

How is that not being critical of Hip-hop? The poison is an American thing, not particularly unique to Hip-hop music. That's his point.
