I don't think it's unfair though I would counter that a better analogy might be the confirmation of Clarence Thomas. Black groups were reluctant to oppose his nomination to the Supreme Court since he was a brother. Now that we all know he ain't no brother, it's too late. With Gonzales, Latino groups have an opportunity that African-American groups do not right now in the case of Clarence Thomas -- which is help remove an official who may look the same but whose policies are opposed to the interests of those whose faces he resembles. Thanks for your comment.

This is kind of an unfair shot at the Latino organizations. Did African-American organizations uniformly oppose Rod Paige as Secretary of Education or Condi Rice as Secretary of State? Not to my recollection. Understandably many have had buyer's remorse with Gonzales.

I really enjoy your blog. Thanks for all the amazing work.

As a white person, thanks for the link to BLACK PEOPLE LOVE US. I posted it on my blog and gave you a shout-out.

As to the topic of this post, in my experience, as an LA resident, other than some very lame, rinky-dink letters sent to immigrants, Latinos have not seemed to suffer from the kind of well-coordinated, active voter suppression that African-Americans experienced in Florida and Ohio (well, tons of other places, but it was in those two places that cost Dems those elections).

As vital an issue as the war in Iraq is, I feel that figuring out a way to better protect enfranchisement is the best way to ensure the political potency of the progressive movement -- making politicians more accountable (theoretically, recent events proving otherwise) to lefties of all stripes.
