I think we need to use the media to promote positive information about Black people including websites devoted to them, self-made positive advetisements, positive Black news, public service announcements online, comparing how far we have come given so much adversity, and breaking down statistics so that what the media puts out is put into perspective. At the same time we have to use the internet to put pressure on the media to get things straight, be more diverse, and give us news that we actually need to know about! Great post! And if there's a key to our success over the next half-century, it's going to be our power in the media.<br/><br/>Ask yourself this question: do whites and non-Blacks understand Black people through <i>me</i> or through media? Now, anyone who's awake, sober and intellectually honest, knows that whites and non-Blacks generally have an unfavorable impression of us. Sure, they may have an intelligent, articulate Black friend--don't they all?--but at the end of the day, you'll notice that their perception of Blacks-at-large is generally more negative compared to their "friend". <br/><br/>And that's the power of media; it can shape the perception of an entire people. Yet Black men and women have little to no empowerment in creating, shaping or correcting those perceptions. <br/><br/>Here in Atlanta, the story of the day--everyday--is crime, crime, crime. Every single network news outlet leads and finishes their broadcast with the crime blotter. Yet every single network news outlet is run by a white station manager. And it's the station manager who's ultimately responsible for news content as well as the personalities who present it. <br/><br/>We gotta wake up, folks. We can no longer afford to allow white and non-Black people to dictate who were are and, more important, who we are not.
