My new theory, in brief: when a white person says, 'Is Obama black enough for blacks?', she is really asking: "Is Obama white enough for whites?"

Phrasing this as a question blacks are asking makes the statement permissable. Some of this is due to anxiety of the type you mention, and some to the white anxiety to even -talk- about race (in public, at least).

I'll be surprised if Obama faces much racism in his campaign of the 'I won't vote for a black man' type. And, that the test would come from BOTH, the right AND the left in this country.

It's going to get very very ugly before it's all said and done by January 2008.

It'll become the most raw, racially, in this country, in a very long time.

Maybe White America isn't ready to vote for a Black Man for President.

While Blacks will not be surprised about it...for a lot of Whites, it will make them uncomfortable, but I say, too bad. The fascination with the question, 'is Obama black enough?', is everywhere trumpeted by -whites-, seems to me. Now, I'm white and I think I consume almost no black-owned media--other than this site--but I don't think this is a minor matter.

I think you're right, because Black folk I know think it's absolute lunacy.

They want to know when America dropped the ' one drop ' rule. Oh yeah, they didn't. So, this entire conversation is moot.

It's the whole 'single drop' theory of race pollution. Obama's mother's white. His father's black. By any purely rational, or genetic, theory of racial identity, he's equally half-white and half-black. But, of course, in the US, he's: black.

Yep. You nailed it.

I dunno. I suspect there's a fairly narrow but quite deep well of unease about this in white America. Worse than white women sleeping with black men--white women having black babies.
