More like a white man. More like them than the darker Jesse or Al or Carol.

It's not just that he's bi-racial. It's also that he was literally RAISED by his White side of the family. I sometimes wonder, if his parents had raised him, say, on the South Side of Chicago in Hyde Park, would he be as 'acceptable'.

I dont doubt that him being bi-racial is part of his appeal. But, that's not his fault. And, it shouldn't lead to any resentment from us.

What I find most hilarious, in all of this, is in a country defined by the ' one drop' rule, you suddenly have all these White folks running around asking, ' Well, if his mother is White, why is he calling himself Black?' That truly does crack me up, like they don't know the reason. But, I do enjoy watching them trip on themselves as they try and rationalize it.

And yes, Glenn Beck, I'm talking to you.
I don't even believe that Beck is serious. He wouldn't care if Obama was as light as Harold Ford, Jr. The right wing has caught onto what they think is a good smear tactic for them - label Obama ' colorless'...then use that to separate him from the general Black community. THAT is what that's about. IMO.

I have read all of those blogs that you linked to. I read the regularly. One has had it out for Obama since day one. The other two are critical.

What bothers me is this ideological PURITY than permeates nearly every article on these websites against Obama. They would rather he be ideologically PURE than VIABLE. They seem to want the candidate that is all the way in their viewpoint, and any 'politics' that Obama does makes him suspect, and by inference, ' less Black'.

Sigh.

Barack Obama is running for President of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

He's NOT running for President of BLACK AMERICA.

And, I believe, we, as a community, better understand that. The person with the ' perfectly authentic progressive Black record' wouldn't stand a chance in hell of winning the nomination.

It is their unwillingness to recognize that which bothers me.

Like a Black man with Ted Kennedy, Russell Feingold, or the late Paul Simon or Paul Wellstone, would actually BE elected, and if he actually got in, would be able to be RE-elected.

I just don't believe it. Not even in the bluest of states would this happen.

You can call it 'The Black Tax', but unless your highest aspiration is a Congressional Seat in a 'safe' district', voting that way is political suicide.

So, yes, they 'moderate'.

I wish those on the left would stop acting like Barack Obama's voting record is akin to Sam Brownback's. It isn't, and they know damn well it isn't.

My question is: is this type of underlying set of assumptions about light-skinned, mixed race blacks the secret to Obama’s acceptance among whites — his half-blackness makes him “safe”.
