Kinky Friedman — singer, best-selling novelist, and now gubernatorial candidate — compared New York in 2005 to “a Negro talking to himself”, thinks that “Negro” is “a charming word” and that sexual predators should be thrown in prison and forced “listen to a Negro talking to himself.”

Hmmm.

But there’s more. Further back, he was fond of using the word “nigger” and used to tell this oh-so-funny joke back in the 80s:

“Yeah, reminds me of old Jimmy Carter’s Christmas card that he sent to Khomeini some time ago that said ‘Ho Ho Ho, the Niggers were the spies.”

Uhhh…

This is a guy who was invited to the Clinton White House and whose candidacy for governor of Texas is supported by Jesse Ventura, Willie Nelson and Dwight Yoakam among others. He has a cult following and will take a significant share of the vote due to his campaign’s populist and folksy appeal, though it’s unlikely he’ll win.

Still, will any political leader take a stand and actually ask Friedman to explain himself? Where is the line between politically incorrect and just plain ol’ country racism? You know, this guy and Joe Lieberman give Independent candidates a bad name.

I reserve the same God-given right to talk to myself despite my status as a “Negro”, Kinky, as anyone else. I’ll stack the quality of my self-talk against yours in a showdown anytime. Have your people call my people. Sincerely, Jill
